I am sorry that I have been off the DISBoards for awhile, but since my deluxe dream trip -- I went to Jordan, Israel, and Egypt for three weeks -- got a new job in a new city -- put my house on the market -- and now my life is in chaos. I hope now to get things settled and can concentrate again on the boards. I thought I would also put up my trip report from my recent trip to the Middle East

October 22, 2007
We left Springfield via van at 7:30 AM. There were five in our group – Paul Rice, Ray Adams, Kevin Adams, Ken Howard, and myself. We will be driving from Springfield to Chicago. We stopped by Hardees for Lunch and then continued on our way to Chicago. We finally arrived at the Saulk Trail Baptist Church in Chicago; where they graciously agreed to take us to the airport to save the institution some money in regards to the airport parking fees. On the way to the airport, we stopped for dinner at Wendy’s at 6:45 PM. We finally arrived at the airport and met all of the others in our group (14 of us) in the international terminal eating area. As a group we started going through the process of checking in, dropping off our luggage; going through airport security; and customs. The entire process took about one and a half hours. This is also the time we were told more information about the trip. Once we arrived at our departure gate; we had about one and a half hours to wait before boarding the plane. We started the boarding process at 10 PM. We left eh airport at 11:36 PM. The entire trip is about 6229 miles. Once we got in the air – the airline served us dinner at 12:30 AM.

October 23, 2007
We watched Ocean’s 13 this morning. The next movie they showed on the airplane was Gracie. Breakfast – meal was served two hours before we landed in Amman, Jordan. We landed at the Amman International Airport in Jordan at 6:50 PM (local time). Flying into this city was just like flying into any other city in the USA. The city is very dirty and noisy. We thought that the city don’t have a speeding limit. It is almost like it is every person form themselves. We made it through visas and customs with no problem because they did us as a group; which means – they gather all of our passports; send us through security; go get our luggage; and then the airport guide comes back with all of our passports stamped. It took us via bus 35 minutes to get from the airport to the hotel – Jerusalem Hotel International. Once we arrived at the hotel – they took everyone’s luggage to the 5th floor – where our entire group is staying. We then had dinner at the hotel at 9:30 PM.

October 24, 2007
Amman is the capital of Jordan. The buildings are all white block because of the heat. They have elections in November to elect the King’s assistants to help with Parliament – this is a constitutional monarch type government. On the way to Jaresh; we saw Mt. Gilead; which was Jacob was met his Uncle Laban. This is where they promised not to fight with each other anymore. Jaresh is one of the 10 cities of the Decapolis – it is also where Jesus healed the demonic man. Laban was chasing Jacob because he left without saying good-bye and Rachel stole Laban’s household gods. The buildings are very similar now as to the way they were in Bible times in regards to their archaeological appearance. The scenery on the way to Jaresh is mountainous – similar to the way the trip to Branson looked, but here it is a desert. We drove by the Jaebock River; which is the place that Joseph wrestled with the angel and his hip was dislocated. Along the road, we saw some Olive trees and several road side places to buy fresh vegetables, coffee, etc. Jarahs ruins were very rocky and full of steps. We saw the place where they conducted chariot races and the ruins of a temple. We also saw the oval place where they met to shop, talk, visit, festivals, etc. The Decapolis has six gates to protect them and to assist them with commerce. Archaeologists who find epigraphic writings consider this a very valuable discovery. We spent two and a half hours at the ruins. It was very rough terrain and hilly. We received a brochure with more information regarding this site. The call to prayer is given several times throughout the day. We are finally on our way to Israel. We have to cross the bridge before 1 PM; before they close the bridge down for the day. We also had our very own tourist police for our group. He is there to help protect us from them (locals) and them from us (the tourists). It took about one and a half hours to cross Jordan/Israel border over the King Hussein Bridge. This allowed us to get through customs and visas. The first thing that you see in Israel is the Jordan Valley; the West Bank. The border is well protected with several check points. Jerusalem is in the Judean Hills – from anywhere in Israel you must go “up” to Jerusalem. We travelled toward Jericho; where we saw a sycamore tree – similar to what the little man climbed in order to see Jesus. We drove past the Mt. of Temptation. Upon our arrival at Jericho; we climbed some tells (excavation sites) – these are the sites where the walls would have stood before they fell down during Joshua’s time. We are not on our way to Tiberius. We traveled from Jericho to Tiberius and it took us two hours. As we drove into Tiberius, we saw where the Jordan River leaves the Sea of Galilee. We had a chance to go down to the Jordan River and wade in the water. After we left the Jordan River where Jesus was supposedly baptized; we went to place to see a multi-media presentation of 4000 years of history in regard to the Galilean region and the Sea of Galilee. We got our things to the new hotel around 7:15 PM. The new hotel is the Caesar’s Tiberius Resort and Spa. We had a chance to walk down by the river after dinner. The river walk has lots of little shops around the Sea of Galilee and our hotel.

October 25, 2007
After breakfast, we got on a boat to go across the Sea of Galilee. Ken Howard read from the Bible. He read the story about the storm on the Sea of Galilee and how Jesus calmed the Sea. We then sang a song – “It is Well with My Soul.” We finished sailing across the Sea of Galilee and went to a museum where they found a boat that was dated for the time of Christ. We left there and went to the place where Jesus met the disciples after His resurrection. Here is where Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him. We then went to Capernaum where we saw Peter’s house; a wine/olive press; and a synagogue during Jesus’ times. We are not on our way to the Mt. of Beatitudes. Once we got to the top, we set down in a garden while Ray read the Beatitudes. We then had a chance to walk around the garden area where the message was given. We are not on our way to Korazim – a city that Jesus cursed. The white lines on the cement of the buildings were put there by archaeologist to let you know what was discovered and what was built on top to allow you to see it in the way it was during Jesus’ life time. We left Korazim and on our way to the next location, we drove by Bethsaida. We stopped to see a Syrian camp in the Golan Heights. We then travelled and arrived at Caesarea Philippi. This is where King Agrippa II built his palace. This is also the place where the Crusader built a fortress. We took a walk down by the Jordan River. We also saw another temple. We left here and went to Tel Dan – Dan-Beersheba. All that is left are ruins and a wall. We are on our way back to Tiberius. We got back to the hotel around 5:15 PM. This gave us a chance to clean and freshen up a little before dinner. This area today was a little bit more arid then some of the places we have seen in Israel. There are a lot of mountains in this area of Israel.

October 26, 2007
Last night was the last night at this hotel in Tiberius; today we head toward Jerusalem. We went down to breakfast and loaded the bus for our journey. On the journey from this area; we topped a mountain and saw our last glimpse of the Sea of Galilee. We drove past the Mt. of Transfiguration; which was the place where Christ transfigured into His glorious body and was joined by Moses and Elijah – along with a few of His disciples. We are not going to Sapporo – up part – it is important because it is on the trade route from Acco and Lebanon. It was a good agricultural town. We drove by Cana; which was the place of the first miracle of Jesus (about the distance from Springfield to Nixa). We made it to Sapporo – the ruins and walked around a lot. This area was very rough and rugged. We drove to Nazareth and by the Church of the Annunciation. We went to the Nazareth Village Place; which is a place where there is a full-size replica of buildings, etc. of life in Nazareth during Jesus’ time. We just drove by the Valley of Megiddo. Giber Mountain is where Jezebel fell out of the window and the dogs ate her. We just passed the Mt. of Transfiguration again. We drove by the place where Gideon chose his 300 men for battle. We arrived at Megiddo and climbed to the top. We were able to take pictures of the Mt. of Transfiguration; the place/valley where Gideon choose his army; and the tree line (in picture) where Naboth’s vineyard is located. We then climbed down 182 steps into Megiddo’s water source; through a tunnel – to the actual source; and then finally climbed up 80 steps where we caught the bus; which took us back to the restaurant/souvenir shop at Megiddo. This is also the place where we ate lunch. We are now on our way to Mt. Carmel. Our bus took us to the top and we got to climb down a little to take pictures. We even got to take a picture of the Israeli Air Force base that is hidden under ground. The planes are brought up from underground and taken back underground via an underground elevator. We travelled to Caesarea – Maritime. This was another palace for Herod’s (Jesus’ time). This was a place we got to visit the Mediterranean Sea. We then travelled a short distance to a crusader castle/fortress. We are now on our way to the hotel on the top of the Mt. of Olives in Jerusalem. We got our luggage and put it in the room and we went to dinner. After dinner, we went across the street from our hotel to get pictures of the Old City of Jerusalem. On the front of the hotel we were told that the paved walkway there is called the Hosanna Trail that Jesus would have walked down on Palm Sunday. Afterwards, we walked to the back of the hotel – to the cemetery and saw the white tombs on top of the ground – similar to the ones mentioned in the Bible.

October 27, 2007
We got up this morning and left the hotel by 8 AM. We walked down the Mt. of Olives down the Hosanna Path – the path Christ took on Palm Sunday. We went by the house of Caiaphas and the tomb of David. We can’t do anything Jewish today because it is Sabbath. The problem with the hotel is that it is owned by Arabs. Israel doesn’t want them here – so they won’t give supplies; work permits; etc. Jeanne said it is worse now than when they were here four months ago. We are on our way to Bethany (about a 20 minute drive). We went through the wall that Israel built to keep themselves separate from the Palestinians. We made it to Bethlehem and went shopping at the Seven Arches. We then went to the Church of the Nativity. After lunch, we stopped by Khoury’s church and talked to Steven. We are going to Shepherd’s Field. We went there and took some pictures. We then went to the Old City and walked around on the top of the wall (at least 2/3 around). We then almost had to run to the garden tomb. The wall had lots of stairs and narrow walkways (the steps very high and/or deep). We got back to the hotel around 6:30 PM and put our things back in our room and went to dinner.

October 28, 2007
The call to prayer is this annoying mono-tone; bad singing; bad voice; in Arabic noise that is blasted over the entire city five times per day. The guide told us yesterday that a majority of the Muslims ignore this call to prayer and just continue on with their day as normal. The driving in this area is crazy. People ignore lines, stop signs, street lights, street signs, etc. they do whatever they want to get from place to place. However, our guide told us that there are very few car accidents. They park their cars where they want to or can; including on the sidewalks. People just dart in front of moving vehicles. After breakfast, we left the hotel by 8 AM. We are on our way to the Wailing Wall and the Temple Mount. We entered through the Dung Gate (which was the gate they used to remove trash, debris, etc. from the Old City). We finally made it to the Dome of the Rock. The building is absolutely amazing architecture. This is the third most holiest place to a Muslim – behind Mecca and Medina. We went to the spot that is believed to be where the Holies of Holies were actually located. The garden area (with the trees) is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. We then walked to the Temple Institute Museum; which is the organization preparing all the equipment, resources, and personnel to reinstitute the Temple as soon as the Ark of the Covenant is found. We then walked through some more of the Old city. We finally left the Temple Mount and the drove to the Book of the Shrine Museum. On our way, we saw David’s Tomb; the place where Mary (the mother of Jesus) died; the Upper Room (where it is traditionally said to have taken place; and the House of Caiaphas – where Peter denied three times that he knew Christ. We arrived at the Shrine of the book where they have a 50 to 1 ratio model of Jerusalem during Jesus’ times. After visiting the model, we visited the Shrine of the Book where they have the actual jars that were found when they discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls. They also had portions of the Old Testament on original scrolls. Next we went to lunch at Jerusalem’s mall. We discovered that our guide has never been to a mall before and he was completely lost. We went to do Hezekiah’s tunnel, but it closed earlier than we had expected. We did get to see its entrance; however, what was nice is that we got to visit the Pool of Siloam. The pool is much smaller than I had imagined. We decided to walk and shop in the Old City. It is amazing how small and active these streets can become. The city is so crowded and filthy dirty. It stinks of trash and sewage. The cigarette smoke can almost kill you – it is so thick. Speaking of smoking – there are signs everywhere about not smoking, but then they give and provide ash trays (our hotel room has the non-smoking sign in the ash tray). I can’t remember who said it in our group, but that he discovered a way to beat terrorism – give them all the free cigarettes they want and let them smoke themselves to death. After our walk and shopping trip in the Old City, some of our group went back to the hotel via the bus and some decided to walk up the Mt. of Olives. Just before we started our track up the mountain, Ray asked an Israeli police if we could go to the actual Eastern Gate – He said yes. This surprised us because it is closed off because it now is a Muslim cemetery. We started the climb up the mountain – after we crossed two Jerusalem streets; which is very scary because you take your very life in your own hands. It took us 35 minutes to climb the Mt. of Olives (this mountain is between here and Bethany – the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus).

October 29, 2007
We then went down for breakfast and pack the bus. We are now on our way to Masada (one and a half hours away) and then back to Amman, Jordan. The way you go to Masada is through the Wilderness that Moses and the children of Israel wandered in for 40 years. It looked like a dry barren land – more like a rocky, hilly dessert. We drove by the place where the story of the Good Samaritan took place – it is now a police station. We drove by the caves of Quram – where they found the Dead Sea Scrolls – especially the whole book of Isaiah. We made it to Masada and took the cable car to the top. We walked around and looked at the ruins at the top. We then walked down the mountain (700 steps down). We are now on our way to the Dead Sea. We got to the Dead Sea, but we did not have time to get in and swim. However, a few of our group waded in the water. We are now on our way to the caves of Quram where they found the Dead Sea Scrolls. We are now on our way back to Jordan. We are now in the process of crossing Israel into Jordan. It took us an hour to get through. We had to change buses; tour guides; and bus driver again. Our new driver is from Jaresh. We got to go to Mt. Nebo – the Mountain of Moses. This is the mountain where he saw the Holy Land and died – no one knows where he is buried. We are on our way to the hotel in Amman. It is the same hotel that we had at the beginning of our trip – Jerusalem Hotel. We went to dinner (at 7 PM).

October 30, 2007
We made it down to breakfast and to get our luggage on the bus. We are now on our way to the airport. We made it to the airport and through security and customs in less than 30 minutes. We did not have to wait a long time at the gate. We boarded the plane and we are now on our way to Cairo, Egypt. It took us about 65 minutes to fly to Cairo, Egypt. It took us about 35 minutes to get in and get out of the airport; including customs. We are on our way to the Egyptian Museum. The driving here is very bad like everywhere else we have been in the Middle East. I always thought Springfield driving was bad – this is nothing compared to over here. This is another dirty and crowded city. Even the people just walk out in front of traffic and dodge in and out of traffic. The guide says that traffic is awful. We will be spending about four hours in the museum. This is where the King Tut exhibit is located. We did the Egyptian Museum in four hours. Our guide was great. We did see the King Tut exhibits. I just wish they would allow us to take pictures or had a brochure. Words can’t describe what we saw in this museum. It was really good about tell the history of Egypt and about the Kings of Egypt. We arrived at the hotel – Ramses Hilton. We have to get up at 1 AM so that we can leave for the airport by 2:30 AM.

October 31, 2007
What is nice is that we have a guide to help us get from place to place and get through customs. I have been told it is faster for us than for individuals traveling alone. One other thing I noticed over here is airport security is even tighter over here than in the U.S. We made it to the airport, but we have over an hour wait. I discovered that in Egypt all domestic flights must be done before 7 AM. We are now sitting in the airport. We were told that our flight to Aswan will be one hour long. One other thing that I noticed about the Middle East is all the security checkpoints that you drive through as you go from place to place. You also go through several security checkpoints at the airport too. We finally got on the plane and now on our way to Aswan. We have been flying Royal Jordanian Air, but this time we are flying Egypt Air. We should be in Aswan in an hour and 15 minutes. We arrived in Aswan and it took us 30 minutes to get to the boat. We are not on the boat and waiting for our rooms. We took a sail boat trip down the Nile River and past the Elephantine Island. This is supposedly the island where some scrolls were found here in Egypt of the Hebrew Torah. We then walked through the market place to get an idea of how it is done in Egypt. We then took two taxis back to the boat. Tomorrow we are suppose to have a tour of Aswan and sometime tomorrow the boat is to start cruising up the Nile River. Aswan is probably the nicest and quietest town that we have been in so far.

November 1, 2007
After breakfast, we went back to gather the stuff we need for our morning tour. We have a tour of various places in Aswan. We are now on our way to the biggest monument (similar to the Washington Monument) – 92 meters, but it ended up cracking and was not finished. It was just left the way it is now. We are now heading to the high dam. It produces electricity for Egypt, Sudan, and Israel. We are now on our way to the Isle of Isis. The Isle of Isis was an interesting place. He told us how to read the words. It can be read from right to left or left to right – depending on the direction of the lion. We then went to a place that they demonstrated how to make papyrus rolls and a place to buy them. We then went back to the boat for lunch. During lunch, the boat started our trip up the Nile. We went to a temple dedicated to healing. This is the god that did the first surgery and used first anesthesiology. They have a calendar on the wall that indicates the day; what healing is done; and what offering is needed for that particular healing. We stopped at a local café for juice and/or tea. The temple and the café were a five minute walk from the boat. We walked back to the boat to get ready for evening cocktails (at 7:30 PM) (non-alcoholic) and dinner (at 8 PM). We set around before dinner and talked about all kinds of things.

November 2, 2007
As soon as breakfast was finished we went to the Edfu Temple. We went to the temple by horse drawn carriage. We visited the Temple of Edfu which is another temple to an Egyptian god. After our tour of the Edfu Temple, we took the horse drawn carriage back to the boat. We got on the boat and we started our trip up the Nile to Luxor. We have now arrived at the place and waiting our turn through them. After watching the boat go through one lock; then it was lunch time. During lunch, we went through the last lock. We now have free time for two hours (until 4 PM); in which at that time we have a question and answer time with our guide (during the afternoon tea time). The boast (and us included) is on its way to Luxor where we disembark the boat and fly to Cairo. It is now time for the question and answer time with our guide. We now have free time before dinner at 7:30 PM.

November 3, 2007
After breakfast, we headed for our morning tours. Our first stop was the Valley of the Kings – place where the tombs of the Pharaoh’s were discovered. We are now going to our second stop. The tomb of Queen Hatshbosoot. This is the queen who became a man so that she could become the king or pharaoh of Egypt. We are now on our way to lunch at McDonald’s. We are now on our way to another temple. We visited the Karnack Temple; which is another temple built by Ramses II for the Egyptian gods. This is our last set of temples for this visit. We are now going back to the boat to get ready to go to the airport. Well, we finally left the boat and on our way to the airport. We arrived at the airport and got the entire group through both checkpoints in less than 30 minutes. We now have a 45 minute wait for the plane. Well, we are finally on the plane and on our way back to Cairo. We have the rest of evening free when we get to the hotel. We made it to the hotel (Ramses Hilton) and got settled in for the night.

November 4, 2007
We were told last night that they are going to check our bags all the way to Chicago. We have to be packed; have breakfast; and be ready to go by 11 AM. This is the day that we go to the pyramids and the one that we climb to the middle. We all are now on our way to the pyramids of Giza. Once we got there; some of us stayed on the bus; while others road a camel. After they got back from the camel ride; we went to the pyramids (only nine out of ten are left – one collapsed in an earthquake). The first pyramid that we visited was the Great Pyramid. This is the pyramid that we climbed to the middle of it. They would not allow cameras in the pyramid – so we were told to leave our cameras on the bus. We went and visited a few more pyramids and some of the first pyramids made (from a distance); which are called step pyramids. After we left the pyramids; we went to see the Sphinx. It was so hot in the pyramid that my shirt was drenched. It was funny – after we left the entrance of the pyramid and got out into the sun (93 degrees) – the wind (small amount) actually made us cold that a few of us wished we had our coats. After we left the Sphinx; we went to McDonald’s to have dinner. Once we got to McDonald’s; some of the group decided to go to Hardees. We are now on our way to the plaza for more shopping. Well, at the last minute they decided not to go shopping. They just drove around town for about an hour and then took us to the airport. We got through airport security pretty fast. We only had about an hour and a half wait at the airport. We are now on the plane. Once we arrived; we got through security and customs in about 30 minutes. They took us on a bus to the airport hotel. We arrived at the hotel at 12:35 AM. They are going to give us a wakeup call at 7:30 AM. Tonight we all got our own room. This is because it is the airline’s fault with the missed connection; which was the reason our stay is longer than we first expected.

November 5, 2007
We left for the airport and it took only a few minutes to get through all of the various security checkpoints. We now have over an hour wait before we can board the plane. Well, we are finally on the plane—but we are five minutes late leaving. We finally left and now on our way to Chicago. We watched “Everyone Loves Raymond.” We just had a small snack on the plane. They finally fed us lunch. We then watched a movie – Live Free or Die Hard. We are now watching – Underdog. They are getting ready to feed us again. Well, we finally landed in the USA. It did not take us long to get through customs.

Enjoy!!

Glad you could join us! Wow, what an exciting life you lead....:faint: !!
[...thanks for sharing....:) ]

Kim:
It might appear to be an exciting life, but from my point of view -- it seems quite hectic now. I think it is because of quitting my current job; getting ready to move to a different city; start a new job; and try to get some sense of normal back to my life.

I will say that two fantastic trips one to WDW and the other to the Middle East was great. They were both trips of a life time.

Just keep me and my wife in your thoughts.

Thanks,

My family and friends are going to be staying at AKL for the first time next July. I am trying to find out more about the spa at AKL. How is it like? Has anyone used the facility during their stays there? My friends are thinking about taking a short break in the afternoon to chill at the spa while we are there. We would appreciate any feed back. Thank you.

Wow...I can barely take it! 10 days 7 hours 36 minutes!
