JAMBO! The UN-official AKL Thread ~ UPDATED(short film/pg 8 & slideshow/pg 12) Part 3

Well, 23 days to go.

The packing has begun in earnest (since the warm weather clothes, here in CT, are LONG since past usefulness) over this past weekend, with only a few "old standby" pieces of warmer, just in case, clothing left to go into the suitcases. That, and the mountain of ancillary stuff needed to travel with little kids (all still in use, of course) from stuffed animals to favorite blankies to...well, you get the picture...is all that's left to pack. :)

we're also really gearing up, now. The GPS is programmed with all the places we need to travel to (Nick Hotel, AKL, Publix, Walmart, Joe's Crab Shack, etc) . They're all set up as favorites.

We've got our route down saved in the GPS.....CT to Fla via Tappen Zee bridge, garden state parkway, I-95 and I-4. My wife is ECSTATIC she won't have to man the maps and navigate. The doohickey with the nice ladies voice (funny, she doesn't scream at me when I miss an exit or take a wrong turn!!) will take care of all that for her.

We want to be pretty much set BEFORE X-mas comes, since we leave about 9 days later and don't want to have to scramble AFTER the holiday madness to get ready.

There's some questions from earlier in the thread (and others) that I'm going to try to get answered while there.

1) What's the wine, beer, and adult beverage selection at Zawadi like now.

2) Where are the internet jacks in the villas

3) What's the construction currently like in the main lodge (Jambo House) and at Kidani Village.

4) Will a wireless router work "plug and play" from a net connection.

Are there any other pressing questions anyone wants answered or things I missed from the past few pages of the thread? Just post them here and I'll add them to this post (which I'll then print, and take with me).

Since they've announced that DVC members will now have free internet access with all their stays (on points...not if we pay cash for a room) startin in '08...I'm assuming 1/1/08 is the start date....my plan is to do a "live" report while there. I'll try to get pictures up each day, too. I'll probably post a few pics here, a summary of what's going on at the lodge, and there will be a link to the main "live" report for everything else.

:yay: I can feel your excitement building!! :woohoo:

I actually got a little lump in my throat when you mentioned the Tappan Zee Bridge and Garden State Parkway!! (reminders of my teen years!!!)

A "live" report would be awesome! :thumbsup2 I'm sure we'll think of more questions for you before you go! ;)

Sadly we are at home but we absolutely loved AKL :thumbsup2
What a fantastic week we spent there. We had booked a standard room but got a pool view with a big king sized bed. My brother in law also stayed and he got a savannah room with 2 twin beds.
The atmosphere was wonderful and we loved that we you get there they welcome you home. We all said it felt like home and didn't want to leave. It was a busy week so we didn't see as much of the lodge as we would have liked to but that can be done on another trip.

Here's a few on my favourite pics:

Thanks for the pictures! I know how you feel about being back home. It takes me a while to adjust to home and work after a Disney trip. I leave in 6 days :woohoo: and I am going to make the best of every minute of my trip. This will be our first stay at the AKL. Am I excited:yay: ? To say so would be a extreme understatement!

TKDisneyLover,

I have several questions:

What "view" did you get (your room location)?

Did you re-book (Bounce back)?

Most importantly: How is Veda? (I'm sure she was fine while you were gone, but thrilled to be back home with you! :))

Our room location(room 4204) was right above the check-in desk(lobby). Our balcony faced west(Sunset Savannah), I believe it was Jiko's roof because we could smell food everytime we walked out there. And the view was more of a tall roof ledge, I had to stand on my tippy toes to see the giraffes heads.

No we did not re-book, DH wants to head to Ireland next year so we probably will not be back to Disney until 2009:sad1:

Veda is wonderful, thanks for asking! She did really well at the vet's boarding facility and was very excited to see us when we got home. Unfortunately I can't say the same about our cat Samantha, while we were gone she developed a bone tumor, which the vet said is fast growing. She had been a little sick before we left, but did not have the tumor. She's 17 and the vet is hoping the tumor stops growing, but if it doesn't we just need to make her as comfortable as possible until it's time to let her go.:sad1:

Thanks so much for posting the pics. We can't wait to get there to enjoy in person!

Your welcome!

There's some questions from earlier in the thread (and others) that I'm going to try to get answered while there.

1) What's the wine, beer, and adult beverage selection at Zawadi like now.

3) What's the construction currently like in the main lodge (Jambo House) and at Kidani Village.

These are the only questions I can answer for you.....

1) There is a better selection of wine & beer down in the Mara than there is in the Zawadi Marketplace.

2) We did not see or hear any construction in the main lodge. We could see people occassionally out on the balconys cleaning the glass doors and painting so I am assuming those are the finishing touches.

Have a wonderful trip!!

Sadly we are at home but we absolutely loved AKL :thumbsup2

I wish we would have gotten your upgrade, but either way we are completely happy with what we received for our standard view price.

The person standing on the stairway is one of your photos looks similar to our friend Robin who joined us for part of our trip. Check out our trip report in my signature link and check out his pic and let me know what you think.

You pictures are excellent, thanks for posting them, they bring back such great memories. I don't think I can wait 2 years to go back!

Well, Ireland would be nice too, I suppose! ;)

Tammy, so sorry to hear about Samantha. :sad1: We recently went through something similar with one of our cats, who was only 6 years old. :sad2: When it became obvious he was uncomfortable, we made the heart-wrenching decision to have him put to sleep. Hard to say goodbye, but no one ever wants to see their pet suffer. Prayers for you, to help you through this.

Kim,

In case you'd like to check out all the Disney Resorts to see the Holiday decorations, Disney8704 posted a detailed day and a half tour. I guess she's trying to keep her mind off her grief.

Thanks so much for your kind words. And sorry to hear about your kitty, 6 years old is so young. We are very thankful she has given us 17 wonderful years!

Here are a few more pics.......Enjoy!

Can anyone guess where this next shot was taken in the AKL?

Disney2007115.jpg

This is one of my favorite shots! Only I wish it would not have been so blurry! I used the "candlestick" setting and needed to be really still, obviously I wasn't still enough! I'm sure you can tell where it was taken from, especially if you've wandered the 4th floor.;)

Take time to tour the Lodge. There is so much to see and you'll learn a lot from the African CMs.

Make sure you take plenty of pictures. We'll be waiting for a trip report.

Have a wonderful trip and hope you have great weather. pixiedust:

....thanks....

BTW ~ Tammy, what lovely pix....the one of the savannah during early morning (at least, that's what I'm guessing...) is very serene.....:)

We are back - just made it in last night before the storm hit. What a difference - yesterday we were sweating at Epcot, today we are shoveling out in freezing rain! :sad2: It was a great trip! What a feeling to finally walk into the AKL and see it in person! I have lots of pics but they're all still on the memory cards - I promise to post soon!

Glad you like the pics! You only have 5 more days to go, lucky you! Your family is going to have a great time!

Actually it was late afternoon, but your right it was serene. I had been on our balcony and, because of the obstruction:rolleyes1 , I could not seen the giraffe clearly but knew they were there. I headed down the hall to the Outlook and their were CM's very quietly hitting drums, almost like they were calling in the animals. I headed outside and was able to enjoy the beauty of the savannah. Ahhhh, I wish I could go back today......

Isn't that crazy to come back to our winter weather!:scared1: We had the same thing when we got home, my husband had quite the clean-up because we had snow, freezing rain, and more snow. And then it snowed again 2 days later. This weekend we received another 5 inches! There's no doubt that we will have a white Christmas!;) Can't wait to see your pics!
