And our room 5501 was so great too.

5501 that is a bit of a walk for my taste... but convenient to the pool elevators.

Wallyb .. We were in 5501 for our first trip to AKL! It's a great room! I always use it as an example when people say "all deluxe rooms have a day bed" cause it doesn't.

I didn't think it was a long walk at all, Cass. It's the first room in the 3rd pod... right by the pool elevator. There is the open area with the art work and windows by that elevator .. that's where it is.

Being a corner room, the balcony has an open side which is great. The only problem is the viewing area with the rocking chairs is right beneath you, so sometimes it can be a little noisy.

Hey ppony-you are only at the AKL starting on the 14th but you posted earlier that you are getting to WDW on the 8th... (nothing gets past me re Disney stays... ) Lucky you at WDW from the 8th-18th -11 days -sweet...

You're good. Yeah, we only get to WDW every 3 years or so so we try to make it as long as we possibly can but can usually not afford to stay at a deluxe for more than 3-4 days. I'm TRYING to work on the DVC concept with hubby for a few years from now but he's resistant.

Cass, so what does a Victoria Falls Mist taste like? I have been eager to try one since I read bout it being stellar so long ago. I promise to not go near the cattle! Sounds like something YUMMY to converse with DISers over!

I'm sure this has been posted a million times in here...but I searched through the thread and can't find specific dates. When will the DVC construction be going on? Does anyone have a link where I can find more info.

DH and I will be at AKL from 1/31 to 2/4 for our five-year wedding anniversary. I can't wait!

Hey Cass, now that I've taken a second look at this creature I think it is looking at you reproachfully because you won't share your zebra domes...

ppony-that's still pretty awesome to be at WDW for that length of time ending up at the AKL-that length of stay definately calls for a trip report... (btw every 3 years or so is still pretty cool--its probably just enough time for there to be some significant changes... )

wallyb-are you writing a trip report... and when did you do the Nemo show-(in the morning, afternoon...I figure EE is still the first thing on the AK intinerary....

The only way I can describe a Victoria Falls Mist is sweet and delicious. I have the recipe, but have not tried it yet.

I don't have a link or anything - from what I heard they are starting with the 6th & 5th floor rooms -converting them to DVC units. I do not believe the main construction will have begun in February when you are there.

Did you book a deluxe room? or a standard room?

Yeah I loved that room.
So easy to get to everything and far enough out on the "U" so you look right at the rock and beyond.

We walked right into a 3pm preview show.
They said it was one of the first general public previews.
We did EE 4 times.

As for the AKL DVC
Here's what we heard while we where there.
The demo units are not finished -
There on 5
There's going to be 2 of them.
I think they said they are over on sunset.
The plan is to take the rest of 5 for the DVC (the whole thing!)
There will be a new building as well for the DVC in 2007/2008.
It will have a North African feel- think more Moroccan in style.
It will connect to the main lodge.
It'll have its own pool, spa, new sit down dining and savana with some unique aniamls.
That's all I got.

But we could see far beyond the rock as well.
And for some reason - no beasties in this shot. Go figure.
It was almost always 2 or 3 giraffe and a few zebra as well as other animals.

These are the new cutie patootie red river hogs on sunset trail.
Mom and a few babies.
I highly recomend the sunset safari- if you can do it - do it.

there are new "bunk bed" savannah & pool views but no standards. Are the bunk beds still available in standard view?

There are no longer any bunk beds in standard view. They switched them when they started charging extra for the bunk bed rooms a few months ago.

We'll be staying in a standard Savannah room. Sounds like we'll be ok though cause construction doesn't start until February?
