It is perfectly normal for small children to explore gender roles. Even if you buy into gender stereotypes, children learn traditional gender roles through play and experimentation. Little boys have been imitating their mothers since the beginning of time. Letting a little boy 'act like a little girl' (in the stereotypical sense) can actually help them determine how to 'act like a boy.'
Which is why I'm shocked that's this has caused such a controversy. Even if you think there are hard lines between how men and women are supposed to act, children learn those roles through exploration.
I, for one, am glad that the lines are blurring between gender roles. This is one area where women have gotten the most benefit. Most typical masculine roles have become acceptable for women to adopt, but the reverse isn't true.
I am also shocked that people think that something as superficial as color and paint has anything to do with sexuality.
