I've resigned!!!

Made the decision to resign from my job today. I've been treated very badly by my employer, and while I probably have grounds to take the matter further, I won't.
I'm (I was....!) a Deputy Manager in a private nursing home, and I worked a 38 hour week, working 12 hour days and some weekends. But I asked if I could change my working hours due to the fact that DH is working away all the time at the moment and so I needed to be there for the kids.

They agreed to allow me to work Monday to Friday, working just over 30 hours per week. Then I was told a couple of weeks ago that a new 'Deputy Manager' was to start, and I would be demoted. I wasn't told this when they allowed me to change my hours. I'm not sure if this is even legal!!!!

So this new Deputy started on Monday. I feel so humiliated that the only thing I can do is resign. So I have 4 weeks notice to work - and find a new job!!

I'm really sorry Cath!! It's a disgraceful way to treat you- I'm sure you've done a really good job. Well it's their loss and I'm sure they'll appreciate what they had when they've lost you. Good for you - not an easy decision but you've come away with your dignity intact and I'm sure you'll find a better job really soon.

Cath, I am appalled by how you have been treated. I'm not sure it's legal either?

Sometimes the best thing to do for your own sanity and mental well being is to call it quits. Good for you for having the courage to do that!

I'm so sorry to hear about how awful your employers have been, I've been in your shoes, and when I handed in my notice (even though I was worried about a new job) I felt relieved that I'd done it. There must be something better out there, but from the little I know what your (ex)employers have done is illegal under UK and EU law. If your children are under 6 you have even stronger rights, but in the meantime go to your local CAB and ask what thye think.

Obviously I don't know the full circumstances, but what you've said sounds like a case of "constructive dismissal" to me. I would go to the Citizen's Advice Bureau. You may have a case for compensation.

I know exactly how you feel Cath, 10 years ago I did the same thing. I was fortunate enough to find a job to go to before my notice ended and I've been here ever since. It really was the best thing and I hope it is for you too. Fingers crossed you too will find another job very soon and more importantly one that will appreciate you and make you happy.
