I was helping my girlfriend to get her DH on an insulin pump, as he is a very bad diabetic, etc. I even took them to a diabetic meeting and was working with the pump company, etc.

Girlfriends DH went to this church that claims to heal people. He came home and told his DW that he has been healed and is no longer a diabetic. So he stopped taking all of his insulin and is now in the intensive care unit of the hospital in a diabetic coma! GF called me this afternoon very upset.

Believe it or not this is twice in my life that I have known of this to happen to a diabetic.

That is so sad! How old was this person? I do believe in miracles but they will come straight from God, not from a phony healer.

There's a church here in Orlando who has people convinced that Jesus will make an appearance in Orlando before 2010, and that only those who live within the city limits of Orlando will be able to see him and be saved.

A guy I work with gave up his nice, affordable apartment and moved to a smaller, not so nice area, much more expensive apartment within the city limits so he could be saved.

I know a family... The mom was diagnosed VERY early on with stage 1 breast cancer. She refused any and all treatments because she and her whole family(Dh and kids) were convinced her faith would heal her. The Doctors and extended family pleaded with her to be reasonable and just seek treatment - they refused and she died 5 years later.

It saddens me - my mom was diagnosed right off the bat as a stage 4 - she never really had a chance - but we tried and fought anyway - I just wish she had the opportunity to be diagnosed as a Stage 1 like that other family did. It feels - TO ME - like they were given a gift and they refused it.

Prayers for your girlfriend and DH - let's hope he comes out of this ok and realizes that he NEEDS medical intervenion.

ETA: - This wasn't just something they believed- their Church was the type where people stood in front and "healed" people every week?!?!?!

It's not only sad, but irresponsible. I am all for faith and miracles. However, These days it seems that they are in short order. If someone came to me and said. "You're HEALED of Migraines." Would I believe them? No. I would still take my medication, and I would still watch my diet, because I simply know better. My faith in my body, my faith in God and in Medicine trump my faith in "Faith Healers"

that is so sad! It reminds me of the joke when the guy on a cruise ship won't get on the helicopter that came to save him...won't get on the boat and won't get on...whatever else b/c god would save him...he said "didn't you see that I sent the helicopter, then a boat then a xxx?" I forget exactly how it went...but you get the point That is really too bad. My grandma's sugar was over 800 once and rarely under 350....but she died from a heart attack...her 7th one and she was 63 yrs old!!! you really have to take care of your self if you want to stick around awhile

You haven't lived till you're the charge nurse in a rehab hospital where a particular church group came calling! It was Sunday afternoon after services and they came as a large group. They got some of the patients out of bed without permission and gathered them in an activity room and began preaching and "healing" them. You can't believe the chaos! I had to phone the police but by the time they arrived so had the hospital administrator. Families of some of the patients heard about this and were furious! Didn't stay a good deal longer at this facility so I don't know the outcome, but the hospital was in the process of barring (court ordered) these people from the premises.

Well, now you have heard of three- my mom was in a diabetic coma before she was officially diagnosed with Diabetes. Her sugar was 800 and yes, she was almost dead.

I don't want to scare your GF, but my mom did die 4 years later. She died of a heart attack, but the Diabetes was not under control either.

I hope that he comes out of this and takes his health seriously.

These sort of people are just nuts. I have a good friend who had a husband like this. Shortly after their baby was born, he lost his job. She was unemployed and had been very sick throughout the pregnancy and afterwards. He didn't bother to look for a new job. He said that "The Lord will provide him with a job." Whatever! He even continued to give huge sums of their unemployment check to the church. Thankfully, she divorced him shortly afterwards. He's since bounced from one dead-end job to the next. She's employed, a great single-mom, bought a townhouse that she rents out part of to help pay the mortgage. Basically, she's doing great. He, on the other hand, is still waiting for the Lord to come to his rescue. He also blames my friend for all of his financial problems. I could go on and on, but it just makes me angry.

Oh, that is so sad. My DS is insulin dependent (Type I) and I have had several people tell me I should pray...give him Noni juice...take vitamins....etc., in order to "cure" him. I would never, ever take him off his insulin. Fortunately I come from a medical home and understand the importance of proper medical care.

I'm so sorry for your friend. Those "faith" healers are bad news, in my opinion!!!

I am a firm believer in medicine and faith working hand-in-hand, not separately.

FWIW though, don't blame the faith healers entirely. Your friend's DH was "ripe for the pickin' " I would imagine. I am sure he was in denial and figured "a few strong prayers to God and I'll be all set".

Diabetes is a difficult disease in many respects. First of all, it's not "fashionable" like HIV or cancer...and please, I mean no disrespect to anyone suffering from those diseases, nor do I mean to minimize their impact. But, they are "dramatic" diseases...often, young people cut down in their prime. Tragic stories of 30 year old mothers who fight breast cancer for several years before succumbing and leaving their young children motherless...everyone knows someone who knows some that this has happened to.

Diabetes...not so dramatic. You tell people they have to watch what they eat, monitor their blood sugar, can't smoke or drink because when they are older, they may go blind or need their leg cut off. Their response "I'll worry about that when I am older". The sad part is though that "older" eventually comesand now they are living with one leg, on dialysis, legally or totally blind in a nursing home or homebound...not a happy existence.

Diabetes...not much celebrity support. As a matter-of-fact, most celebrities hide the fact that they are diabetic. Did you know Halle Berry is? How about Dick Clark?

In our country, someone is diagnosed as diabetic every 21 seconds, according to the American Diabetes Association. It is one of the, if not the, largest "co-morbidities" in terms of cardiac disease, kidney disease, & strokes since it affects the circulatory system.

I wish your friend well. If he survives, I hope the hospital where he is beiong treated has a strong diabetes education program for him to partake of, so he can learn about his disease and learn how to manage it.

How very sad . Bless his heart, probably scared, looking for an easy second chance and was a prime target for some quack. I sure hope he'll be ok and I can imagine his wife is sick with worry.

I have very strong faith and admit to even believing in miracles, but not trusting my life to any faith healer. Life is a precious gift and when it comes to me and my loved ones health, we prefer the pros in the medical field.
