A reluctant trip report. :) Apparently I'm addicted to writing these things, because I hardly want to do this one but here I am. :3dglasses

As what seems to be usual for our January trips, the weather was not good. Sigh. This is getting old.

This whole trip was a do-over from last year, when my son and I got the "plague" aka "the lung thing" moments after landing in Orlando last year January, and it just destroyed our should-have-been-nice, long, trip.

We stayed at Royal Pacific except for one night when we *also* had a reservation at Art of Animation, just so I had access to race transportation for my half marathon. I did the Half last year, too, got a time I didn't feel I deserved, but it was because of the illness. E and I did the 5K last year and it was misery for me; I chose to not do that this year, and signed hubby and son up for the 5K. The kiddo did the Mickey Mile last year (that was the day he was just about to get the illness but we didn't quite know it yet) and this year (healthy healthy healthy!).

We keep Universal APs, and didn't want to get WDW tickets or passes this year. So we had NO WDW park days. We didn't know if we could do it, but (spoiler alert) we did. :)

We flew into Tampa. That was OK. Got a rental car, stopped at Trader Joe's there, stocked up on some things. Drove. Got to RPR.

At checkin we didn't set up charging, so she just took the CC and charged the balance of our reservation plus the nights of parking all up front. Easy peasy.

Got a room on the first floor of Tower 1, first room you come to on the left. Decent room. Possibly semi-accessible. Seemed to have a lot of real estate that I don't remember being in other RPR rooms. We got a minifridge and it was set up under the vanity, which had never been done before for us. (it's usually on an awkward cart or just on the ground in the room)

I was sleepy sleepy and wanted to unpack, so the guys went off to Jake's. They did bring food back. Pizza was OK, pretzel bread wasn't really soft pretzel-tasting, but was OK for what it was. They also got Jake's version of a caprese sandwich, which I guess was good when warm but not so much by the time it got to me.

Slept.

Up early-ish.

There's often a lot of discussion about the safe. We put my smallish baggalini, two kindles, one ipad, one non-apple-tablet in there (all devices were in cases, even), and there was room for more.

Got our Express Passes because we hadn't done so the night before.

This is the handy dandy Will Call kiosk at the resort, just to the right of the EP kiosks.

And along with the machine, there's a desk with humans there to help you with any ticket purchases, and also Hertz people for rental car needs. Those people leave at something like 5pm, though, so they aren't a bit of good if you want to pick something up late at night or very early in the morning. Plan accordingly.

Helpful sign.

The nondescript door you see there is the laundry room.

DSCF5391_zpsb0cc7965.jpg

See?

DSCF5392_zps2817197c.jpg

Since we were in Tower 1, we decided to go through the building to the side exit. I took video, but it's very boring and it's sideways. So I'll just tell you that a non-rushing, but decent rate of walking, from leaving our room to exiting this door it was 1 minute 14 seconds.

DSCF5394_zpsb058a891.jpg

Pretty pretty foliage.

DSCF5397_zps7a69c122.jpg

But I don't want to play in it. Scared of creepy crawlies. Some young kid was running WAY ahead of his family and went off and hid behind that. I just kept thinking of the kid of the Dis'er about 5 years ago who dropped a toy in a bush at Disney, put his hand down to get it, and got bitten by a snake. Quite a bit of time in the hospital for that toy retrieval...definitely not worth it. Hiding in the bushes...shudder.

From just outside the door to taking this picture of the Margaritaville roof (this included time for bagcheck) it was 8 minutes 12 seconds.

DSCF5400_zps1afc8134.jpg

Why he still wants these pictures taken, I don't know.

On the other hand, oh this is just too cute. Our first trip in December 2010. 6.5 years old vs current 10.5+.

Went on in for our very first time to see Diagon Alley! More later.

Entered the Studios.

A lot is said about Disney keeping one land from the other. That can't really be done at Universal. (not at Disneyland, either, which I don't mind)

So at Uni there's an interesting area where you see Optimus Prime on top of the overhang of the Transformers "nest" building, and he's pointing.

DSCF5404_zpsf26fd116.jpg

If you look where he's pointing, it really looks like he's pointing at...

DSCF5403_zps56e29db2.jpg

That dragon over there. :)

Really really neat.

DSCF5410_zps2451aa29.jpg

In pictures the Knight Bus looks like it's just plunked down there, and it sort of is, but when you're right there it works.

DSCF5411_zpsd40d4852.jpg

I don't know what I was expecting with the entrance to Diagon Alley, but...it was more than what it was.

DSCF5412_zps01387970.jpg

DSCF5413_zps83e0dc5f.jpg

Maybe when there's no one else there it's neater.

The one good thing DA is good for is hiding all the people in the Studios! :)

We had lunch (unsatisfying) at the Leaky Cauldron.

I have taught the kid well. I took a picture of him taking a picture of his HOT butterbeer.

It's also possible I've taught him terribly. Taking pictures of food on a regular basis IS annoying. But but but...this is vacation!

Ploughman's Platter without the Scotch Eggs. They supposedly added a bit of bread and a bit of cheese to make up for the eggs.

(sigh...either I've suddenly developed cataracts or I did something really funky with my camera on this trip. either way, darnit!)

Loved this sign.

Every 10 minutes or so, pay attention to the dragon!

Over on the other side of the area. If passing by that structure in the middle, be aware...it's a fountain that magic can be done on, and sometimes water shoots from it, and rather far, too.

DSCF5439_zpsa3ace5e5.jpg

So....I loved being in DA, to a certain extent. But it's loud. Really loud. There's a dragon every 10 minutes, there is magic being done all around. Every so often there's a musical group. There are people. So many people.

There was almost no food for this family o' vegetarians, and what there is is expensive for what you get. Ingredient issues keep us from soft serve, and we can only drink so much butterbeer. I'm never in the mode for beer when touring a themepark, especially expensive beer, especially when I have wine back in the room. We've bought most of the souvenirs we want; so at this point, it'll just be getting DS new robes when he really needs them IF he still wants them. That's pretty much it.

The kiddo got an interactive wand, but we realized a couple hours later (a couple very confused, frustrated, hours) that while the box was for an interactive wand and the receipt was for an interactive wand, the wand inside was actually NOT interactive. Since the only one they took out on the shopping trip was the one he got, they didn't actually see an interactive one, and just didn't know. The TM at Ollivander's in Hogsmeade was awesome about it, though, so it all worked out.

The one thing that astonished me? The seriously real looking Bellatrix Lestrange dress in Knockturn Alley. It was very very cool looking. And it was also $240.00.

:scared1::eek:

Nice pics.........glad you enjoyed DA as much :thumbsup2

This trip was disjointed and it's been awhile and in the meantime I have had that ridiculous and weird "coughing sickness", where you think it's a cold and you cough a bit and then you think you're better and then one day you feel like you're dying and your stomach hurts like crazy (I am not the only one this series of symptoms has hit!) and then the next day your stomach is better but the coughing starts. And continues. And goes on and on and on.

All that to say...I don't kow what happened in between pictures. :)

But I do see that we found our way to King's Cross Station.

DSCF5442_zpsb2394f06.jpg

Cute storyline. Is going to get OLD pretty quickly for me, but it's better than walking to the front of one park, over to the next, and back to the other HP section.

Once we got to Hogsmeade, there's an area where you can take pictures of the train and such without being in the way.

DSCF5445_zps3dbdabc2.jpg

This was one of the spell areas that DS couldn't get to make work, before we realized he had a normal wand.

DSCF5448_zps3d26459b.jpg

Other than seeing the two areas and experiencing the train, we didn't do all that much. Ate, got some rock cakes, experienced some atrractions. We've been there quite a bit and have APs and don't run all over the place doing doing doing. We love just wandering.

I was also keeping to myself a bit, not wanting to get dizzy or sick in any way, since I had the half marathon in just a few days from then. So I was very much in self-presevation mode. :)

I believe that second night at the hotel, we had veggie sushi at Orchid Court. DS got a pizza. You can order pizza and some other menu things from Jake's downstairs, and have them delivered up to Orchid, so that's what we did.

Beautiful photos Bumbershoot!! They are getting me really excited for our trip!:goodvibes

I love the two pictures that show how much your son has grown! :)

Thanks for the TR...I'm enjoying it and glad you're being compulsive about it.:lmao: Great, great pics, so many details. Wall to wall muggles, though--ouch. Also loved the two pics of your ds at the height thingie--of course he loves the pic, because I'm sure it seemed like he'd never be able to get on everything the first time he lined up! My big kids still love to be measured against the doorframe, and see the difference.

My dd loves to look over my shoulder when I'm reading TRs, and she loved the photo of the rooftops and dragon. "It looks like a totally normal city--with a dragon." :)

Looking forward to more.

looking forward to more of your vacation. thanks for sharing with us.
