I went to school for 12 years, spend 4 hellish years getting a good for nothing degree and for what?! NO JOB!!!!!!! If any of you are in school, get out while you can!!! There is NOTHING waiting for you on the other side! AUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!

At least you have an education
Give it time you will find something

I know its frustrating, but the job you want will come eventually. I started out in a slow job market too. I worked on an assembly line and in a grocery store while waiting for my first programming job. It took a few years, but it all worked out in the end.

As for the education being good for nothing, I suspect you will think differently about that later. A college degree is much more than just job training. The knowledge you gained during those 4 years will prove itself over and over in areas outside your job. I know I sound like I'm just spouting platitudes here, but its true.

I wish you the best of luck in your search.

What happened to education for education's sake?;)

Just kidding, don't flame me, I'm reall sorry you are going through this now.

I'm feeling the same way lately. :(

{{{HUGS}}} sweetie, sorry you are feeling so frustrated. Now don't hit me, but what about if you got just a little more education? Perhaps a masters? That might make a big difference in finding a position in your chosen field. It helped my son a lot, he found work in his field as soon as he finished his masters.

More comforting and calming {{{HUGS}}} for you :)

Yep, the same thing happened to my husband. When he graduated from college, he couldn't really find anything that he wanted to do with any kind of decent salary. So, he went back and got his Master's degree. Once he had that, it was pretty easy for him to find a good job he was interested in. He's in the Information Technology field, and, in that field, nobody's really interested in people with a Bachelor's degree. Your field might be different, though. Just keep looking and don't give up!

thanks guys, i just needed to vent about not having a job (therefore not having any money). I have tp pay back my studeny loans soon and am flat broke. I'm actually studying for my GRE and GMAT so I can apply for grad school. I guess i'm really frustrated because i've been sending out resumes since April and have had only ONE interview. And that didn't work out. Anyways, thanks for listening.

I'd think journalism would be a difficult job to get into. Have you looked at job search engines on the web for your area?

Good luck finding a job. I bet you'll have atleast 2 offers next week.:) My fingers are crossed for you.:)

I don't have a journalism degree but have done some freelance writing. Go to your local small and mid-sized newspapers and offer to be a stringer. Right now they will be looking for people to cover school events. They also are frequently looking for people to cover local meetings and trials.I have done this quite a bit and never have a problem getting work this way. It pays very poorly but you will be compiling a folder of clippings to show future employers,as well as gaining valuable experience. Consider going to non-profit organizations to do their PR type brochures. This too will go into your portfolio. Get a copy of Writer's Digest magazine, and Writers Market (expensive but could be in your library) and start submitting non-fiction articles to magazines. Go on line. There are alot of sites for writers. These include on-line zines that pay for writers. Again, poor pay, great in portfolio.
Believe me, you know that journalism/writing is a tough career field to break into. You will have to start small, look at alternate types of jobs, and do any type of writing you can. By the time you are finished grad school you will have experience and a nice little portfolio which will get your foot into the door at a better paying paper or news station.

Well, having a journalism degree myself, you're dead on... they're pretty much good for nothing! ;)

What kind of job are you looking for? Newspaper, magazine, something else?

Now days, they won't even let you in the door without a college degree. Soon, you'll need one just to mop floors....

Hang in there Wagamama! It took my niece a little over a year to find exactly what she wanted & eventually you will find the right job for you too. Just be patient and be kind to yourself!:D

after i graduated, it took me 7 months to finally land o job that i wanted. in the meantime, i temped, and worked at a part-time job having nothing to do with my degree.

have you considered moving to an area where job availability in your area might be better? several of my friends graduated with journalism degrees and they haven't had too many problems getting jobs in d.c. they don't pay that well, but they seem to be happy.

I do eventually want to move to d.c. but not this year. My little sister just left for college (in CANADA) and if i left to my mom and dad would go nutty.

I feel for you. I have a B.A. in Psychology which is pretty worthless except for satisfaction I got that I completed college. My nephew's roommate had to sign a contract at Texas A&M that basically said his Psychology degree was worthless without a Master's. I personally got bad counseling advise through my college - He said major in Psych and minor in Business - I wanted to get into Human Resources. That was 20 years ago.

Good luck to you and congratulations for setting a goal and achieving it!!!!

Well, my jounalism degree isn't good for nothing! But journalism is a field in which EXPERIENCE is worth much more than a degree. Getting second and subsequent jobs in journalism is much easier than getting the first one. I'll admit I was lucky -- I got a job offer from the newspaper I interned at my last semester. Tiggeroo gave you some very good advice. If a new grad came to my office (nonprofit) and offered his/her services for free just to get some experience, I would take him/her under my wing. I think my dh, who is a newspaper editor, would do the same thing. Get some clips and make lots of contacts -- that's how you get a job in this field.
