I went to US/IOA for the first time in May. I'm not a big coaster fan, but other than that I really enjoyed a lot of the rides. We were there on our honeymoon as an addition to our stay at WDW. Now I'm really excited to go back! I'm taking a trip in January with my mother and although WDW is once again the main destination, I KNOW she'll love some of the rides at Universal. But the best I could do was get her to agree to one day. I don't want to choose between the parks because I know she'll love the Mummy and Spiderman (and those are the two main reasons I want to go back) and I want her to see the incredible theming in both parks. So I'll be getting 1 Day/2 Park passes. Being the second week of January I know the crowds will be lighter but now I'm reading that the parks will probably close at 6 and I'm getting nervous about fitting everything in. I wasn't going to bother with this, but now I'm thinking....if we get the Express Pass we shouldn't have to wait long for anything, right? It's more money but if it means we can just walk on to every ride it will be worth it. What do you think? Can anyone tell me what the crowds will be like in comparison to WDW?

take her on a weekday a couple of days after the first and the crowds will be very light. I doubt you'll need the EP's but you can buy them later in the day if you decide you need them. it'll probably too chilly for the water rides, so you can make up some time there.

one day at both parks won't let her see the true theming, but if it gets another WDW fan a chance to broaden their view, go for it. the holiday decorations and Balloonopolis will still be up.

Unfortunately we'll be there on Saturday, 1/12. No getting around that. You're right about the water rides, though, I didn't think of that. Sometimes when I'm down there in January it's still pretty warm.....I'd bring ponchos anyway, just in case.

If you are doing water rides in January, bring along dry clothes with those ponchos....you can still get wet on the water rides (esp. Popeye). There are restrooms nearby you can change in...and across from Popeye (next to restrooms) are lockers for rent ($2)
