Its Time, Hockey Fans!!!

OK...laugh at me if you must. This is my first season as a hockey fan and something in this thread has got me confused. Who in Haiti are the "Habs"????? I think I've figured out that it's Montreal, but why do you all refer to them as "Habs"?

Anyone who can explain this to me without laughing at me is my new best friend! :p

The Habs are the Montreal Canadiens. I believe it is a shortened version of Les Habitants. Why they refer to them as the Habs, I'm not exactly sure (I have to put my energies into hating the Habs--not figuring out why they have that nickame).

I'm sure that ScottWDW or DSNY FN will be able to provide further enlighteningment to this.

You're right, TLinden16, you did offer and I didn't take you up on it, and so I'll have to just hope that your luck turns and the Leafs will turn it around! At least we're cheering for the same team!

Karen is right on this one. Here's what I've always heard:

The most often asked question about the Montreal Canadiens is what does the nickname " Habs " mean.

Legend wants it that the "H" on the Canadiens logo stands for "Habs" instead of Club de Hockey Canadien. The fable began in 1924 when US reporter Tex Rickard was falsely informed by someone that the "H" stood for "habitant", a french word that in those days was used to refer the farmers of Quebec.

Rickard was told that the french players on the team came from farms and were therefore, "habitants". At the time, the Canadiens were viewed upon as the french team of Montreal, whereas the Montreal Maroons were the English team.

Besides, GO HABS GO! is easier to say then GO CANADIENS GO! :teeth:

And, I think it's great that Karen is rooting for the Canadiens, no matter her twisted reason behind it! :hyper:

Karen & Scott,

Thank you for the explanation. I looked up "Les Habitant" in an online French to English dictionary and when it came up with "farmers" I assumed I'd done something wrong. Looks like I was closer than I knew! :p

Since I speak English I'm just gonna say "Go Farmers"...you all will know what I mean, right?

I like the sound of Scott saying I'm right ;) I'm always right, but people don't usually admit that I'm right.

I'm doing a weee bit more capering right now ;) ;)

I would be doing some capering with you, Ann, but since I am rooting for the Habs, I just can't be happy enough to caper.

ScottWDW IM me last night and the Lightning tied the game right after I typed "Go Habs Go" to send the game into overtime. I bet he wishes he never IMed me.

But I'm happy he did Karen. It was an ugly win, but it was a win we'll take anyways!

UGLY! Well, I have some other choice words for that win by the Lightning!!! :earseek: Montreal makes 4 mistakes the whole game and it cost them a goal each time. Otherwise they outplayed them in every way. The 'Bulin Wall kept them in it the first period. Maybe he's finally decided he is a playoff goalie.

Can the Habs come from a 3-0 deficit. History says no but its been awhile since the Islanders did it. Who knows? It might be time again for lightning to strike! :teeth:

As I was telling Karen, my Habs buddy :) , last night. Montreal is learning how to play at the next level but it might be too late this year.

Ah, but I never give up!

GO HABS GO!

See you all on Thursday. Oh, now, can Toronto bounce back from two down tonight! And will San Jose knock out Colorado?

Then there's Calgary....keep the faith, Karen! ;)

I didn't get to watch anything but the overtime last night. Lisa and the kids watched Brother Bear and then we had to get them to sleep so by the time I got out of Spencers room after getting him in bed it was going inot OT.

Well I hope the Flyers win tonight atleast if nothing else I can feel better knowing the Leafs are almost done now to.

You and every other non-Leaf fan! :crazy2:

But you have to admire his courage. Then, again, he's been beat up so much he probably doesn't know better. Breashear would knock him silly if he gets a clean shot in.

I'll be watching as well as our local AHL team, the Syracuse Crunch, tonight. Thank whoever created Picture-In-Picture technology!

I have to add that Tie Domi often does a lot of charity work as well. Often, even though they played late the night before in another city, you will see him bright and early the next morning at some charity function. So even though he's aggressive on the ice, he does seem like a good guy!

Go Leafs Go!

Go Leafs Go!

I have met many Bruins players over the years, and I have found that the "goons" are always the nicest and easiest to talk to.

Of course, the exception is my non-goon beloved Trevor Linden, who is probably one of the ten nicest people I've ever met.

Shane Corson was a riot we drank with him in a bar in Barrie Ont that he goes to or did go to anyhow. He bought us about 4 rounds and then asked if we wanted to see something funny he asked if we would join him. He proceeded to start a fight for the fun of it at the end of the night he just handed his Visa to the bar owner and he paid for all and any damages and drinks for the people he was fighting with and the bar. HE was quite drunk at the time and the bar owner says he did this once in awhile we just sat there didn't know what to do really. He was a really nice guy though and after the fight he shook the guys hand and said good scrap just like in a hockey game. That was by far the strangest meeting I have ever had with a hockey player.
