It's Payback, European Style! A trip to Bavaria & Austria for DIS friends! - Travel Complete! It's a Wrap! 11/2

We made our way to Grottenbahn where we would meet some gnomes, dwarves and a dragon.

q24GA0502BV27.jpg

q24GA0502BV28.jpg

We entered this little chamber where we would ride the Dragon train.

q24GA0502BV29.jpg

Here is the loading depot. The train is still making its way around the track.

q24GA0502BV31.jpg

And here is the Dragon

q24GA0502BV31a.jpg

As you ride the train you follow the same track three different times. The first two times the tunnel is dark. There are little scenes that are illuminated on the side of the train.

q24GA0502BV32.jpg

q24GA0502BV33.jpg

q24GA0502BV34.jpg

q24GA0502BV35.jpg

q24GA0502BV36.jpg

The third time around they turn on all the lights, and you get to see the whole thing.

q24GA0502BV37.jpg

q24GA0502BV38.jpg

q24GA0502BV39.jpg

q24GA0502BV40.jpg

q24GA0502BV41.jpg

q24GA0502BV42.jpg

Once you get off the train there is a dwarf with a stuffy nose. Karin is right there with a tissue for you so that she can catch a photo op.

q24GA0502BV43.jpg

After the photo op you descend some stairs and step into the land of Grimm's Fairy Tales (with the exception of the last one, which is actually legend).

q24GA0502BV44.jpg

There is a replica of the city center, complete with shops that are currently in business.

q24GA0502BV45.jpg

If you see that little panel where the people are standing, there is a kiosk where you can make odd little pictures of yourself. Karin was more than happy to take pictures of me with the various “disguises”.

q24GA0502BV45a.jpg

q24GA0502BV45b.jpg

Each of those little “alleyways” between every two to three shops/houses had a scene from a fairly tale. Let's play a little game! I didn't take pictures of the signs for each one so let's see how many of them you can name! Some of these I had never even heard of so your guess is as good as mine!

q24GA0502BV46.jpg

q24GA0502BV47.jpg

q24GA0502BV48.jpg

q24GA0502BV49.jpg

As I said there were also real business depicted here. This scene depicts the place where we had breakfast the day before. Jindrak has the recipe for Linzer Torte which dates back the longest, though other places serve a pastry with the same name.

q24GA0502BV50.jpg

Cafe Glockenspiel is where we had breakfast on my last day.

q24GA0502BV51.jpg

I thought it was very appropriate that they had Mickey Mouse on the Bankhaus!

q24GA0502BV52.jpg

I think they might have had some sort of zoo for the children, but at this time we didn't have a lot of time. We had a date in the City Centre, in fact we drove past the place earlier on our city tour In the yellow tram.

As we walked back to the tram back to the city center we passed over this which used to be the moat.

q24GA0502BV53.jpg

I'll wrap it up here. The next update will be a short one.

What a charming, whimsical place!! I love Mickey in the Bankhouse, too!! LOL, very appropriate!

And here is the Dragon

q24GA0502BV31a.jpg
Well that's quite a dragon, what teeth he has!

There is a replica of the city center, complete with shops that are currently in business.

q24GA0502BV45.jpg
Well that's very pretty!

Hehe, there's a lot of ways to interpret your expression here, I was thinking mostly you were looking at somethin sketchy "Get the *heck* out of here or something along those lines
Hansel and Gretel ?
Snow White!
Little Red Riding Hood?
???
I thought it was very appropriate that they had Mickey Mouse on the Bankhaus!

q24GA0502BV52.jpg

OMG :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing: I laughed out loud at this one, SO true!!

That was a very interesting place! Definitely not something that you see here!

Jill in CO

Well that's quite a dragon, what teeth he has!
Yes, better to eat you in tiny little bits!
Well that's very pretty!
It was super cute!
Hehe, there's a lot of ways to interpret your expression here, I was thinking mostly you were looking at somethin sketchy "Get the *heck* out of here or something along those lines
She took so many pictures of me here. It was hard to get my face to fit in the right place on the camera so that it was centered in the frame. I think I'd had enough, but they kept switching the backgrounds to get the funny pictures.
Hansel and Gretel ?
I think so.....
Snow White!
I think it's pretty obvious since there are seven little men.
Little Red Riding Hood?
What gave that away? :lmao:
I know! :confused3 Right?
OMG :laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing::laughing: I laughed out loud at this one, SO true!!

I hope you had your office door closed!

I almost started it this morning. Maybe tomorrow instead of the news.
You posted that yesterday, now. Did you watch? Please... feel free not to. Super not worth stressing over.
I've never had Manhattan style either, but it just doesn't sound that good. Why try to improve on perfection?
I'd try it... but highly doubt I'd prefer it.
This reminds me I have a strip of pork belly in the freezer and need to make clam chowder out of it......
I've never made clam chowder. Do you use canned clams? Or go to a fish store and buy fresh?
Not coffee.......Hot chocolate? :confused3
::yes::
I've never had Red Bull, but I don't think I would like it. I prefer my caffeine in coffee form.
I've never had one either. Don't plan on starting any energy drinks either.
I get my caffeine from soda.
Although I did have a coffee last Sunday with Christopher Lloyd.

Okay... he was sitting at the next table, but close enough.

Hey! I know that person! :)
Nicely arranged in the corner.
Gnome on arranged.
Where the deer and the dragons play.
And here is the Dragon
Cool!
Like this shot of you. :)
Tell you're engaged.
Fun little ride. :)
Once you get off the train there is a dwarf with a stuffy nose. Karin is right there with a tissue for you so that she can catch a photo op.
After the photo op you descend some stairs and step into the land of Grimm's Fairy Tales (with the exception of the last one, which is actually legend).
Cool! My dad used to mention the Grimm tales... but never actually told one. Maybe he had forgotten the details or assumed we knew them.
There is a replica of the city center, complete with shops that are currently in business.
That's pretty cool.
You're a princess!

Of course you already knew that.
Hansel & Gretel
Actually had a relative named Gretel.
No idea. dwarfs.... some sleeping lady... Nope. No clue

Red Riding Hood
No idea on this one.
I thought it was very appropriate that they had Mickey Mouse on the Bankhaus!
As we walked back to the tram back to the city center we passed over this which used to be the moat.
Huh. Deep. Can imagine a siege army being stymied by that.

You posted that yesterday, now. Did you watch? Please... feel free not to. Super not worth stressing over.
Well, I'm not stressing, but I had to have my dad come into my bedroom last night to program the TV for Netflix. For whatever reason the TV in my bedroom forgot it's connection to Netflix and he had to go through a whole sign in process which wasn't simple. I told him that I could just buy it on Prime at home, but by the time he was in there programming, he was determined.

So I watched a few minutes of it, but promptly fell asleep. We had kind of an intense chopping and prepping day and then a grueling afternoon watching movies, but for whatever reason, I was super tired after dinner. I fell asleep after about 20 minutes, but I woke up during the scene where they are pulled over by the cop. So I woke up in the morning and rewound back to where I remembered (where they started the road trip).

I had a really hard time watching it. It was absolutely groanable. What struck me was that in the background of one shot, there was a shot of a Diesel sign. $1.09 per gallon! And all the payphones! Wow this movie must be old. I didn't bother to look.

I am halfway through and I'm in the mindset of "If I finish it that's 52 minutes of my life I won't get back". But I also want to know how the whole ransom, briefcase, kidnapping, turns out, and I don't want you to tell me!

Right now they are on the side of the road after Jim Carey drove 5 hours in the wrong direction, thus avoiding the trap by the Feds. The other guy has decided he's going to walk home. I'll probably watch some of it when I go to bed and finish the rest in the morning. It's like a car accident. I can't not look.

I'd try it... but highly doubt I'd prefer it.

If I could try it for free, I might.

I've never made clam chowder. Do you use canned clams? Or go to a fish store and buy fresh?

I've done both. We made it at my Grandma's house on Cape Cod with Quahogs, but my recipe uses canned clams, much easier. This is the recipe that Fran and I settled on after a few incarnations.

http://www.longproperties.biz/ClamChowder.html

I've never had one either. Don't plan on starting any energy drinks either.
I get my caffeine from soda.
Although I did have a coffee last Sunday with Christopher Lloyd.

Okay... he was sitting at the next table, but close enough.

You mean the guy from Taxi and Back to the Future? :worship: He's done a bunch of other stuff where he was amazing, but it slips my mind. You know being old and everything.

Hey! I know that person! :)

Yeah, she's a dumb American. :jester:

Nicely arranged in the corner.
Gnome on arranged.
Where the deer and the dragons play.
:sad2:
Like this shot of you. :)
Tell you're engaged.
Fun little ride. :)

I was! Even on this silly little ride!

Cool! My dad used to mention the Grimm tales... but never actually told one. Maybe he had forgotten the details or assumed we knew them.

Well Disney accurately represented them in all his cartoons! :lmao:

You're a princess!

Of course you already knew that.

:rolleyes1

Hansel & Gretel
Actually had a relative named Gretel.

Yup, that one is easy.

No idea. dwarfs.... some sleeping lady... Nope. No clue

Red Riding Hood

::yes::

No idea on this one.

That also seems to be the consensus.

Huh. Deep. Can imagine a siege army being stymied by that.

Me too!

I was too tired to take any pictures on the tram down. Besides my phone was down to nearly 30% power and I wanted to save it for our next activity. Besides it was mostly vegetation and walls so not much to see there.

And here we are back in the city center. I had quite a conundrum when I was reserving my hotel back in February. I wanted something that was quite budget friendly, and I had found several places that were near the city center that had very reasonable prices. I asked Karin if this was a good idea and where I should consider staying.

You see that building with “University of Arts Linz” written on the edge. That building separates the city center from the other parts of the city, where motorcars are allowed. Only taxis and police vehicles are allowed in the city center. What I never even took into consideration when seeking a hotel was that said hotel would not have a parking lot or even a means for cars to drive up to the front!

q24GA0502BV53a.jpg

Had I booked one of those hotels in the city center, I would have had to take the tram (with all my luggage) and schlep everything over the cobblestones to get there. Karin said to me about Harry's Home (where I stayed), “at least they have a parking lot where we can drive up and pick you up.”

It never even would have crossed my mind that a hotel wouldn't have a parking lot! My hotel in Nuremberg barely had one too! So once she pointed that out, I decided that Harry's Home (though a few dollars more per night) would be a better deal.

Back to the city center….,we walked up this tiny street and Karin suggested that we try this shop where they make hard candy.

q24GA0502BV54.jpg

I wasn't so interested in the hard candy, But when she pointed out that they made marshmallows, and they gave me a taste, I was very interested. Karin ended up buying some for both Jill and I and told me that I had to share with her! Sorry, I didn’t take any pictures of the marshmallow candy, but believe me it was delicious!

This is a solar light fountain. It takes in the light during the day, and then at night does a display. That must be something to see!

q24GA0502BV55.jpg

This building up ahead on the right is known because Emperor Frederick, who was recovering from a surgical procedure, ended up dying here in this building. We learned this on our tram tour earlier in the day.

q24GA0502BV56.jpg

This square was also known as a place of commerce. Farmers would bring their goods here to be weighed.

q24GA0502BV58.jpg

This plaque appears on the side of one of the buildings to commemorate the weighing of products that took place here in olden times.

q24GA0502BV57.jpg

Here we are heading to Afternoon Tea. This was my first time of having “Tea”. something that I will be repeating in about 44 days in London with Jill!

q24GA0502BV59.jpg

And this is where we are having tea. We pretty much had the place to ourselves.

q24GA0502BV60.jpg

It took a few moments for them to prepare the tea service, so Karin and Tom convinced me to have a glass of wine while we waited.

q24GA0502BV61.jpg

Once they brought the tea, we had to wait for this timer while it steeped.

q24GA0502BV61a.jpg

Here is the spread.

q24GA0502BV64.jpg

And my tea. I believe I ordered, “Earl Grey, hot.”

q24GA0502BV62.jpg

And me enjoying said, tea.

q24GA0502BV63.jpg

Another instance of me enjoying jam on my scones.

q24GA0502BV65.jpg

After tea we walked around the city for a little bit.

q24GA0502BV66.jpg

These Roman tunnels were uncovered when they were digging for a parking garage in the 1970s or 80s.

q24GA0502BV67.jpg

Then we caught the tram back out of the city. Karin wanted to order a cake for a special celebration the next week, and she wanted to use her free credit that she had accumulated at breakfast our first day. I bought about half a dozen more of the Karamel truffles. They were very good! Then we walked back up the street to catch the bus back to my hotel and their house.

I took the free time to visit the Billa next to the hotel. I picked up a little more wine, as well as tomato juice, carrot juice, and these nifty little ice cube making baggies.

q24GA0502BV68.jpg

q24GA0502BV69.jpg

I had an hour or so to chill in the room, so I worked on some replies and updates for the TRs before they picked me up around 7:15 to have dinner at an Austrian pub.

I had a mixed salad, and realized that this was some of the only vegetables I'd eaten since arriving. I don't count the little slices of pepper and cucumber on the breakfast trays. It was good, but an odd mix of ingredients, not like American salads where a green salad is an expected amount of ingredients. This was all over the map as far as what was included.

q24GA0502BV70.jpg

I ordered the Cordon Blue Schnitzel, which was pork stuffed with ham, bacon, and cheese. If I had not ordered the salad I may have even finished the Schnitzel, cause I came pretty close!

q24GA0502BV71.jpg

I was pretty tired when they dropped me off at the hotel. I didn't have any late night texts with my friends back in the states!

No wonder I was tired! I walked more today than any other day since I’d arrived in Austria!

q24GA0502BV73.jpg

It's a cult classic!

Which I suppose means you're only supposed to like it after it's percolated for a bit.
Plus, I think it's more of a movie that appeals to a select demographic. Not quite sure what that demographic might be. Juvenile boys?
It's like a car accident. I can't not look.
That about sums it up.

But mostly he's Doc from Back to the Future.
Yeah, she's a dumb American. :jester:

Oh, for sure. Almost exactly the same.

Dumb and Dumber was filmed in Colorado! We can go visit the filming sites if you want. ;)

Pinkies up!

I'm not sure that "like" is a word that I would use to describe my feelings about it. And yes, I think that you have hit the demographic on the head.

Why were we even talking about this movie?

That about sums it up.

::yes::

Thanks! Hope to try that recipe soon.

Let me know if you like it. I was going to say that I would make it for my folks when they came down for Thanksgiving, but my Mom informed me that she can't do dairy. Which is why she would prefer Manhattan style chowder. I've got to figure out another audience to make the chowder for because I can't finish off that whole recipe alone.

Oh, for sure. Almost exactly the same.

Did you ever hear the story of the Walt and how the Jungle Book was made. At the first meeting he asked, "How many of you read the book by Rudyard Kipling?"

"None? Good, cause we're going to throw that out and start brand new!"

Dumb and Dumber was filmed in Colorado! We can go visit the filming sites if you want. ;)
That's OK, I've already lost two hours of my life to that movie, I don't need to waste any more!
I can't believe our trip is so close! The tea in London is going to so good!
I know, so close!
I see what you did there.
I was hoping that someone would! :goodvibes
Pinkies up!

That sounds amazing! Ham, bacon and cheese? Sign me up!
I know! Right????? :confused3

I was too tired to take any pictures on the tram down.
What???? What kind of shoddy TR writing is this!?!? There's no excuse!
Besides my phone was down to nearly 30% power and I wanted to save it for our next activity.
Okay. There's a good excuse. You're forgiven.

;)
Besides it was mostly vegetation and walls so not much to see there.
Alas! I was so hoping for a good vegetation and wall photo.

Those chairs look really comfy.
Karin and Tom convinced me to have a glass of wine while we waited.

I did say it wasn't worth paying for/stressing about!
And yes, I think that you have hit the demographic on the head.
::yes::
Why were we even talking about this movie?
Because you posted this:
I’m going to wrap it up here, but not before I relate a funny story. While in this restaurant, I had to use the restroom, and for some reason I did not bring my phone with me. I left it at the table. Well both the stalls in the women’s restroom appeared to be occupied. So I waited, and I waited, and I waited a little more. Then I knocked on the stall doors, no answer. Hmmmmm…..

So then I looked at the door to the restroom itself. There was a note on it written in German. Just then another lady came to use the restroom. She evidently spoke German and was able to decipher what it said. Basically it said that the women’s restrooms were out of order and to use the Men’s restroom.
Which made me think of the bathroom scene in the movie.
I was going to say that I would make it for my folks when they came down for Thanksgiving, but my Mom informed me that she can't do dairy. Which is why she would prefer Manhattan style chowder. I've got to figure out another audience to make the chowder for because I can't finish off that whole recipe alone.

You're nuts.
Oh!
I forget that Germany/Austria (Europe in general? :confused3 ) has cities set up like that.
I like it... but I did forget.
I didn't even realize that. On my last few trips, I don't think I really toured places like that, or I was backpacking and didn't notice (that was a long long time ago, in 1988  )
When my Dad and I went in '04, he was already in his early 70s and had a bit of a hard time walking to our hotel with a rolling suitcase on cobblestone. I felt bad, but the view was worth it.
Yeah, I'm glad I didn't have to experience that. I didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel room, so the view didn't really matter.
Always. Always visit places where they make sweets.
You know, I'm not that big of a sweets person. Although I'm still enjoying that Taffy from The Forks!
Did you???
Of course I did!
Interesting...
Does seem out of place a bit amongst all the older buildings.
Perhaps it's the city flexing it's "we're old, but still evolving muscles."
That looks old. Either because it is, or was made to look it. Did Karin say if it was original?
No, the recording on the yellow tram mentioned it. It was old.
"convinced"... had to really twist your arm, huh?

;)
You've seen how difficult it is to get me to drink a glass of wine!
Hmmm... I know people who like their tea weak or strong... doubt the timer would be rigidly adhered to by them.
Yeah, I don't drink it often, so I really don't know how I like it, but probably more on the strong side.
Not bad. Different from what I'm used to seeing. (I've had... hmmm... 4-6 high teas?)
I've seen plenty of pictures of people's tea service. I'm looking forward to what they do in London.

Yay! Someone else got it!
You rebel you! Look at you, all expanding your horizons and all. :)
That's me!
I think that's so cool. Imagine that those tunnels were there for how many years before being found.
I know, the people who buried them were probably like, let's just get rid of this old stuff, we can building newer and better.
How does that work?
Next update......hopefully later today.
I really liked the different salads, there.
I don't like my food touching, remember? So green salad should have it's own bowl, potato salad should be in another. They just put way too much into a bowl for my liking.
Love? Is that the word?

:duck:

I did say it wasn't worth paying for/stressing about!

Yeah, but once I started it, I had to know how it ended. And it's leaving Netflix on September 30, so I couldn't watch it on a repeat trip to my parent's house.

Which made me think of the bathroom scene in the movie.

Which bathroom scene? There was a lot of bathroom humor. Was there only one scene that took place in the bathroom because if there was, I'm not even sure how that related to my experience. :rolleyes1

Good reason. I'm hoping to try it soon, but no set date.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to wait until after I get back from my cruise. It's just too bloody hot here to make soup. Plus I need to have a dinner party or something so other people will help me eat it.

Thank you. :snooty:
You're nuts.
No, no nuts. Just vegetation and walls. I don't want to overdo my stimulation.
I didn't even realize that. On my last few trips, I don't think I really toured places like that, or I was backpacking and didn't notice (that was a long long time ago, in 1988  )
Impressed that your parents would let an underage child backpack through Europe.
You know, I'm not that big of a sweets person. Although I'm still enjoying that Taffy from The Forks!
I was wondering about that!
Of course I did!
I'll need Jill to confirm.
No, the recording on the yellow tram mentioned it. It was old.
Ah! Cool, then. :)
You've seen how difficult it is to get me to drink a glass of wine!
Practically have to pry your mouth open and pour it in with a funnel!
I've seen plenty of pictures of people's tea service. I'm looking forward to what they do in London.
It should be spectacular. :)
I know, the people who buried them were probably like, let's just get rid of this old stuff, we can building newer and better.
::yes::
Next update......hopefully later today.

I don't like my food touching, remember?
Right!
But I didn't think that'd apply to a salad. However...
So green salad should have it's own bowl, potato salad should be in another. They just put way too much into a bowl for my liking.
...however... I do see what you mean.
Yeah, but once I started it, I had to know how it ended. And it's leaving Netflix on September 30, so I couldn't watch it on a repeat trip to my parent's house.
I'm glad it was able to so enrich your life.
Which bathroom scene? There was a lot of bathroom humor. Was there only one scene that took place in the bathroom because if there was, I'm not even sure how that related to my experience. :rolleyes1
This one.

When you said it wasn't working...
Yeah, I think I'm going to have to wait until after I get back from my cruise. It's just too bloody hot here to make soup.
Hot soup on a hot day. Maybe... no.
Plus I need to have a dinner party or something so other people will help me eat it.
I'll help!
I travel out of my way for good ice cream and clam chowder.

No, no nuts. Just vegetation and walls. I don't want to overdo my stimulation.
🤦‍♀️ :sad2:

You know perfectly well how old I was then. :snooty: In fact I was of legal drinking age, something that my BF at the time seriously regretted (not that age mattered in Europe). He was especially displeased in Italy when I chose a carafe of wine over a can of coke when one could have had either with their dinner at one of the places we went.

I was wondering about that!

Yeah, I have about a third of it left. I'll eat one or two pieces a day. Some days I forget. I'm still working on my Gummi bears and Milka bars too, but I haven't gotten that far in this TR!

I'll need Jill to confirm.

I'll make sure she chimes in here!

Practically have to pry your mouth open and pour it in with a funnel!

Yeah, and tie me down too! Oh wait that might have been TMI. :rolleyes1

:lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

Right!

I'm not sure enrich is the word that I would use.

This one.

When you said it wasn't working...

I completely forgot about that bathroom scene. There were multiple and that was towards the end where I had to watch it multiple times. However, the people at the restaurant had the good sense to lock the doors so no one could get in!

Hot soup on a hot day. Maybe... no.

Yeah, today it was at least 100 degrees. I'm not sure how my friends convinced me but we walked a half a mile in hot temperatures and sun, just to drink some drinks and eat some food. Then we walked a half mile back out carrying a bunch of stuff. When you put it that it way it doesn't sound as good as "Hey want to go get some LE HM Tiki Mugs?"

I'll help!

Well, I'm off the beaten path for your road trips, but if you want to take a flight down here, I have list of fun things for you to do when you visit. And I'll be sure to make some clam chowder! Maybe escape the Great White North in the dead of Winter.
