It's officially summer re: power bill

My bill was $430. I hang my clothes outside. I believe that my bill is about 12% less than it would have been however. I switched my electricity provider to another rather than CL&P. CL&P still maintains the wires, I have to pay them for that service but Dominion provides the power. I am guaranteed the lower rate until Dec. I can switch back at any time.

:scared1: Oh, my! Honestly, though, I'm scared to see what our next bill is going to be. We've been over 100 for the past few weeks, 115 on our back porch yesterday, and the day before, so even at 78, the a/c is running all the time. :sad2:

I'm in Texas too and I'm dreading our next bill. We have ours set at 78 also and they run constantly. We replaced the downstairs unit this spring so hopefully that will help. The pool pump is a killer in the summer and last year we had a couple of $600 bills. The whole house is electric and about 2600 sq ft with high ceilings but it still seems high!

It isn't uncommon in Texas for people to have electric bills in the hundreds of dollars in the summer. Our "low utility bill" time is in the winter.

That's why when we built a house a couple of years ago, we built it to be as energy efficient as possible. And our highest bill last year was still somewhere in the $150 range. But my friends and my parents were saying that theirs were in the multiple hundreds of dollars.

We keep ours at 79, perhaps upstairs a little cooler. Have 2 units, tinted dual paned windows and the units are 2 years old. We are on the budget plan at 560 a month. One of our bills last summer was 1070 bucks.

We have a tier system here so prices spike the more you use.I am a SAHM with kids.We have to run the air.We pay three times per kw hour what my friend pays in Alabama.

Congress just passed a bill today under the guise of climate control. Sounds warm and cozy til you realize it will double your utility bills, I don't know about the rest of you all but the thought of paying 2 grand a month in the summer for air doesn't leave me warm and fuzzy. IT is bad enough I have to pay 3 times for for something then my friend that lives where it is hotter there then here.

So I would urge you to look up the cap and trade bill and decide if you want to pay double in utilities or if you want your parents on a fixed income to have to decide betwen meds or heat in the winter. People love to complain after the fact once the train is out of the station but don't often know what it is that is coming their way beforehand. It is much easier to sneak these bills in then it is to repeal them.

Anyone care to elaborate?
The cap and trade bill passed congress. Yet another bill they rammed through without reading. Our only hope lies with the senate. IF not expect your bills to at least double. That might not sound so scary if you live somewhere with reasonable prices or a mild climate but for those of us like myself that pays 3 times more for electricity here in CA then what my friend in AL pays the thought sickens me.

I'd be cutting my air conditioning up a few degrees, if mine got that high. And doing some caulking around windows and doors. Wow.

I have a 3500 sq ft house in hot NC and our summer bills are usually less than $300. Our May bill was $94. We keep our two units at 79 in the summer (68 in the winter).

You made me choke on my coffee. I go crazy if my electric bill goes over $200!

You guys are extremely lucky. My bill is usually 300-400. Highest one we had was about 535. I keep the air set at 79, try to unplug everything, and that's how much they are. They are in the low 300 range during the fall/spring when I don't use the air/heat.

Just looked at the latest bill: $612, up from $302 last month. Summer rates have kicked in. Fun fun fun

WOW!!!!!! Our power bill is $58 this month (I think that's for mid-May to mid-June, it's the bill due July 11th). What on earth is driving yours up so high????????

I am amazed at some of these bills. Granted, we have a small home. 1100 sq ft. Our last bill - paid June 10th was under $65. Our next one, due mid July is $90. I do expect the next one to be in the $150 range. It has been very hot here for June.

There is no way we could afford a $600 electric bill! We would have to build a screened in "sleeping porch"!

Your $612 bill will be well over $1,000 next year unless your Senator does something about it. You can see an example of your new rates in yesterday's USA Today. The bill has passed the house, the Senate is your only hope.

It has been a really hot June here in Tampa, mine was $270 this month. That is for a 3200 sqft 2-story house. I keep upstairs at 77 during the day and 75 at night, down stairs is usually at 75. My house is 3yrs old and is built well, in May my bill was $180. It is a huge difference from the one story that we rented before we bought, last Sept. that bill was $350 for a 2400 sq ft single story not so energy efficient.
