Although the Disney company doesn't admit that plus-sized tourists are causing "It's a Small World" boats to bottom out, longtime Disney watcher Al Lutz notes that "heavier than anticipated" loads have caused boats to come to a standstill on more than one occasion. The problem has become common enough that Disneyland has built a platform next to one tricky area where boats commonly get stuck.

Disney denies that weight issues are the cause of stuck boats. Instead, the company suggests that "layers and layers" of fiberglass have built up where maintenance teams have patched and re-patched problem areas.

Nevertheless, "It's a Small World" will be getting an inch more of water, and some lighter boats. The ride will be closed for ten months beginning in January 2008.

The kicker, I think, is that they give away free food passes to anyone taken out of the boat. Funny, if you ask me.

This was discussed earlier and some of this story is designed to grab people's attention. I will also say though I have never been pulled from a boat for weight issues or anything actually but I have only ever heard people getting special fast passes or other ride passes, never food. But a special ride pass doesn't sound as cool does it.

I'm sure you're right. Big Thunder Railroad broke down while I was on it and we got a special ride pass (that we were able to use 3 times til someone took it. :)), but in a situation such as this, I'd imagine they're giving away the coupons for food to essentially cover their butts against any sort of lawsuit that should stem from such an encounter. This way it looks as if they're not discriminating against anyone, and they're not choosing anyone in particular to exit the boat to relieve weight. Either way, it's a stick situation for Disney, and they're handling as best as they can.
