About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Right now, jmasgat (Maura) is coordinating the teams. Go to this thread and post that you would like to join a team. You might also like to mention if you are an experienced athlete or just starting out, if you are a runner, a walker or a biker or what your goals are. She will try to match you up with a team that will benefit from your current fitness levels and goals.

Maura maintains the team leaders and members and makes sure the numbers stay pretty even. She will decide when it is time to start a new team and will coordinate that effort.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

Because of personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

Welcome to October everyone!

I had a nice Study Group walk today! I think we did around 1 mile (my watch was not working....user issues:) )

I'm getting up early tomorrow to do my second training workout! So excited!

My first Half Marathon experience-
Well, it was a relay...I'm saving my official Half for Jan. 8, 2011!
My husband, Bob, and I ran the Hershey Half Marathon
Together we ran the 13.1 miles in 2:08:09
Official time 1:17:55 for me, 207th place out of 240 relay runners..ugh!
Bob came in 57th place-he ran his part in 51:05 He is so fast!

I liked doing the relay with my husband because I was done just when I needed to be, I was starting to feel it in my hip and knee. It turned out that I ran 7 miles. I thought it would be closer to 6.65. He ran 6.1 for the last part and since I'm slower, he passed everyone. I think that made him run even faster! Bob says he didn't like doing it this way and would have rather run the whole thing together. He always stays with me though, so we wouldn't have seen how fast he really is! We both got the same medal that everyone who ran the whole 13.1 got! My first medal-very cool!
I met a few members of Team AllEars there too. If you want, you can check out my pictures on my facebook page.

Yes there was chocolate! The goody bags had a chocolate bar and a Payday and a giant cookie. There were plentiful snacks after the race and they were really promoting a new chocolate recovery drink that tasted great. We had lots of that available at the finish line. There were chocolate bars at the relay switch place and at one of the aid stations on the second leg. There were characters along the route-Hershey Bar, Kiss, Twizzler, Jolly Rancher...even the Rolo candy character was out! I ran down Chocolate Avenue under the Kiss shaped street lights. There were bands in Hershey Park on my leg of the race and Bob ran near the Milton Hershey School where there was entertainment from the students. Lots of Hershey residents lined the roads to cheer and they gave us all a great boost! It was pretty well organized for an inaugural race. I'll do it again next year but will be ready to run the whole thing myself!

Hello,

For those wanting a "WISH racing team" Headsweats brand Visor and/or Hat by the January Marathon Weekend, please hurry and place your order over on the thread. I need to get the minimums before the end of the month so the order can be placed and I can get them mailed out to people.

Find the link below in my signature for the Hat/Visor order (not the special order Visor)

Thanks!!

Barb- The Hershey half marathon sounds like so much fun!! I'm glad you enjoyed it as a relay team! I think that would be a fun way to get into a 1/2 marathon but there are no events like that here! Like you I am saving my first 1/2 for Disney in January!! I'm getting so excited!

I can't wait to hear how the W&D runners did! Is anyone back yet or are you all still at WDW?? I wish I was there!!

AFM: Today marked the 2nd workout for my WDW training! It was warmer this morning than Monday! A balmy 44!!!

Today's Workout of the Day (WOD) called for 10 easy walking minutes. I modified this to be a 10 minute warm up, 10 brisk minutes, and 10 cool down minutes.

Total miles: 1.77
Total time 31 minutes
Avg Pace: 18 min/mi ( I was just feeling slow today so I decided to be slow!)
Avg Moving Pace: 16:44 min/mi
Best Pace: 112:40

Only 94 days until race day!!!! Can you feel the excitement yet?

Hi Everyone!

I'm back from W&D and sad to be home from vacation. It was my first half marathon, and I truly had a great time. I'm very slow (time was 3:30:32) but I had the best time. I really felt like it was a 13 mile party. There were some kinks along the way, but I can't wait to do the January Half now, as this was so much fun.

I can't wait to hear other's thoughts about the race.

Nikki - great job on the training. You're going to keep me on track training for January now.

I would love to hear about the training plans everyone is using to get ready for the Half in January. We are just about 12 weeks out so it's time to get organized! I bought both Galloway's book and John Bingham's book about half marathon training but I haven't got a plan in place yet. I know I want to skip the speed work and tempo stuff because I don't want to risk injury. I may save that for after WDW in Jan! I want to have fun and enjoy the whole experience, including my time in the parks!
What sort of plan are you using and where did you find it?

I joined a Galloway group here in NYC at the start of my half training in May. (Trained for W&D). I LOVED it. I felt that I recovered quickly and didn't have the burnout that I heard others experience on the longer runs. Now that I'm back from W&D and heading into January I'll be doing a modified version of Galloway because I'm not starting from the beginning. This time I'll be adding in some speed work as i do want to get faster, but I'm going to stick with Galloway's method going forward. Also, I did get injured (due to bad sneakers) and was able to keep my training going. And the weekday runs were perfect for my lifestyle. Galloway only calls for 30 minutes 2 times a week. I was up to an hour 2 times a week before the injury, but knowing that i could drop down to 30 minutes and still finish was a great comfort to me.

Good luck to you with whatever plan you choose!!!

Jane- Congrats on the W&D finish!!! I'm so excited for you!!! That is about the time I am hoping to finish the WDW 1/2 in!! Maybe we could be buddies if our times stay the same?? If not a meet up is a must for all of us Rebels!

Glad I can help keep you on track for Jan!! I'm sure all of you will help me stay on track too!!

Barb- I am using Jon Ackland's book "Beginners Half-Marathon trainer the 14 Week Program" It is nice and easy and has different plans for walking, walk running, beginner run, Improver run, competitive run, and Race programs! There really is something to choose for everyone! Over the summer I did Marathoning for Mortals just to see if I could actually stick to the training. (Which I did!!) I really like the Ackland book because it gives you an outline of what you should focus on each week (this week is basic proper technique). If you have been doing any training at all you can really skip over the first 2 weeks.

I suggest finding a program that will work best for you but realize you can modify it to fit your life!

AFM- Today was a rest day, however I did end up doing 3 miles!!! I was watching my 2 month old niece and it was so nice out today we went for a walk, well she fell asleep and I wanted her to get a good nap in so I just kept strolling around the neighborhood! It was nice and relaxing to just walk at a slow pace and take in the fall colors! I've got a buys weekend coming up so don't know when I"ll be able to check in! I'll do my best!

I hope everyone is having a great start to their weekend!

Today I participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in my town! It was so AWESOME to be walking with so many people to support a great cause!

Today the weather in MI is AMAZING!!! It is in the high 70s!!! I remember times before where I did this walk in the snow with gloves, hats and mittens!!! So happy we are having a "heat wave!"

Today's Workout of the Day (WOD) called for 15 easy walking minutes.

Total miles: 2.68
Total time 46 minutes
Avg Pace: 17:23 min/mi
Avg Moving Pace: 16:26 min/mi
Best Pace: 11.13 min/mile

Only 91 days until race day!!!!

I hope this nice weather continues to minimize the running in snow!! However having lived in MI for all of my life (25 years) I know better!!

Take care everyone and keep on moving!

Hello everyone!!

Happy Tuesday!! I was so excited when I got home today! I was feeling icky after class and had a headache from too much studying! I was surprised to find a FedEx package at my door stop that included a few Disney Pins and a Micky Rice Crispy treat! (I'm a travel agent in my free time)! This really perked up my day!

I barely fit in my workout yesterday but managed to get in 15 minutes on the Tread Mill at work! (I'm still in the "easy" first weeks of training!)

I'm off to make dinner and study, again! I hope everyone is doing well!! Can't wait to hear from you all!!

Hi There!

Nikki - so great to hear about your pins and treat. Anything disney is always a pick me up. Keep up with the training. I'm reading posts but just haven't been posting a lot.

I skipped my run last night. I have a lot going on. Interviewing for a new job in another city tomorrow so lots to take care of. This weekend I did a 4 mile recovery run with my group. Man, did my legs feel like lead legs this weekend? All week I was thinking how great I felt, but not so much. Oh well, hope to get in a run tonight.

Have a great week!

Jane- How did the job interview go??? I hope the pixie dust I sent helped :) Are you legs feeling less lead like? I'm worried about the WDW 1/2 and then park touring all the next week!

AFM: I got in another workout on Wed on the Treadmill. I had planned to do it at lunch but we got SUPER buys and I didn't get a designated lunch hour! Yesterday and today were "days off" for me! I plan on doing some strengthening with my resistance band. I have a huge test in school next week and will be studying all weekend. I made flash cards that I can look at on my walk! I just hope my sweat doesn't make them all yucky!!!

Hope all is well for everyone!! Can't wait to hear from you soon!

Jane- How did the job interview go? Where is your new job? There are probably WISHers who can tell you about the city, maybe even the company.

Nikki - Don't worry about walking around the park after the half. It's much better on your legs than getting on a plane or in a car. We stayed until tuesday night, and went to the parks. A little later and slower than our normal park commando pace, but not that much. A little Hot tub time after the race will help.

Barb Hershey sounds like fun. It's a possibility for next year. We (DW, Rose&Mike) started training for W&D without a plan, although we were a modified Galloway. Here is where we are now:
Weekday runs are a little longer 40 - 45 vs 30.
Slightly fewer walk breaks on the long runs. 1 min per mile. I did not get the stress relief I want from a long run taking them more often than that. Seems like you were constantly starting and stopping.
Definately do the cutback weeks.

James shouldn't you have done your marathon by now, or did I miss the race report?

AFM - Been bad about communicating, so here is my very late trip report for W&D. We met Eva(VilliansRule) in the starting corral and saw her on the course also. Also saw Galloway on the course a couple of times. Remainder was as per W&D thread.:
Fireworks start cool. Animal Kingdom crowded. Dark roads with uturn bad. Osborne Lights an unexpected surprise. Path along boardwalk crowed. Crowds outside Beachclub verry supportive. Bag pickup incredibly bad, DW nearly passed out. Finish line party crowded.

Weather was cool here today, 41 at start of the workout. Ran 14 at almost the same pace as W&D. Looking for one more half this fall.

Mike

Mike: Sounds like the W&D had ups and downs! Hopefully they will learn and make it better next year!

AFM: I watched a somewaht local marathon yesterday. I had a friend running it and caught her at several spectator spots! It was her first marathon and she was worried about finding me at different spots....I told her not to worry that I would stick out! And I did!
41423_12104260_4166319_n.jpg

I switched my walking to night time to mix things up a bit....Still fighting with the darkness factor but had my walking buddy Margie with me so it was all good!

Today's Workout of the Day (WOD) called for 10 minutes with a hill workout.

Total miles: 1.62
Total time 26 minutes
Avg Pace:16:296 min/mi
Avg Moving Pace: 15:36 min/mi
Best Pace: 10:09 min/mile

Only 82 days until race day!!!!

Had a stressful day today! I had a HUGE exam for my PTA class, I feel pretty confident but the stress was taking its toll! I moved my workout that I was supposed to be tomorrow up to today to help work off some of the stress!

It did help!

WOD called for 15 easy minutes.

Total miles: 2.25
Total time 36 minutes
Avg Pace:16:05 min/mi
Avg Moving Pace: 15:02 min/mi
Best Pace: 11:50 min/mile

I defiantly felt the side effects of the hill workout yesterday! I was a bit slower today and sore. I did some extra hip stretching at the end of today's workout.

Hope all is going great with everyone!

Only 81 days until race day!!!!

I hope everyone had a FANTASMIC week!!!!

I am proud of myself because Margie (funwalker) and I got out this morning for our walk despite the scattered rain showers! I know that without out a buddy I would have turned around and went back to bed! Thanks for the motivation Margie!

WOD called for 30 easy minutes.

Total miles: 2.91 (so close to 3!!!)
Total time 45 minutes
Avg Pace:15:42 min/mi
Avg Moving Pace: 14:36 min/mi
Best Pace: 8:57min/mile (We must have been REALLY trucking it at some point!)

Check out the Player function on Garmin connect!

Have a great day everyone!

Days left 77!!!

Mike- I love the player feature!!! Lets me see where I was really working and getting my heart rate up!

I finally got some accommodations for the WDW 1/2! My friends are letting me stay at their time share in Bonnet Creek for FREE!!!! I'll have to figure out race transportation......but might try walking over the the Caribbean Beach resort and hopping a bus there!

I had a great walk on Sat, however I woke up today and my hamstrings are TIGHT!! I wonder what happened! Oh well off to stretch!

AFM- Finally got in my first workout of the week today! I have just been so busy with school and work! If only there was more daylight I'd be out there more!

Margie and I got up before sunrise and got in a good walk! Hit up the local trail and saw Many (probably 6) deer in different spots!

Time 32 minutes
Distance 2.01 miles
Average Pace 15.20
Best pace 11:55

Days left until WDW 1/2 73!!!!
