It's like a knife in the back ...

Disney has used a lot of computer graphics in their other films, even during the "Golden Age", such as the Caves of Wonder in Aladdin, and the stampede in Lion King. Before that, it was the clock gears in Great Mouse Detective (you remember that movie?). And Disney said at that time that they would never leave character development to a computer. Times have changed.

What makes a good movie is not the technical wizardry of the film, but the story. Tron had awesome graphics at the time, but the story was bad. A little later, Last Starfighter did a similar computer graphic portion of their film and it was a big hit.

Disney has lost the very people who create the magical stories we've come to love. It's not even about writers. Toy Story was written in part by Buffy's Joss Whedon. Later he helped scribe Atlantis. It's about vision of the producers and their ability to see the world they want to create and the humor within it. John Lassiter at Pixar is such a person. Heck, he can make you cry and laugh with a desk lamp for heaven sake. Katzenburg was another such person. Pixar will be successful not because of Disney, but because of who they are. I've seen the latest trailer of Incredibles and just that couple of minutes made me want to go out and see the film. Disney doesn't seem to have anyone in animation that has that talent, and thus we get flops like Home on the Range.

Walt would have certainly embraced this new technology and I'm sure CGI films would have been in his repertoire, but he would have remembered what Eisner forgot, that it starts with a story, a spark of imagination, a caring for detail and characters.
