DH got word yesterday that they have finally decided to close our plant. He'll have a job for at least the next 35 weeks. Unfortunately, he does IT work and there isn't much in our salary bracket in the Oklahoma City area. We make more than most other companies in our area would pay. So we may have to look at moving to another area or taking a significant cut in pay. There is a chance the company may transfer us to another facility if there is a job opening, but we may not want to go where they need us.

Anyway, we are checking Monster.com and other job search sites while we polish up the resume. I know we may have to tighten up our belt, but in a way it is an exciting time, too. I feel like we have been living with this axe hanging over our head for several years. I have faith that God will help us find the right place for him to work (and possibly for us to live).

Of course, the kids don't want to even think about moving. DS is a freshman in high school and DD is in the 6th grade at the middle school. They can't imagine leaing family and friends.

Anyone know of companies looking for really talented computer geeks? I can't even remember off the top of my head what he does, but he's good at it. LOL!

Do you know of an area that might be a good place to check out? Dallas, Kansas City, St. Louis, & Denver might all be good possibilities. We'd prefer to stay in the general area. My family is in Oklahoma and Kansas and DH's parents live here in Oklahoma. His father is a stroke victim, so they couldn't travel to see us and we feel a need to help out as needed. Besides, I hate to even think about how much stuff we have. A move is going to cost a fortune.

DH has a masters from K State and he is a great trouble shooter. In fact, several consulting firms have been interested in him in the past, but they aren't hiring now. Just thought maybe someone would know of a company that is searching, so that we might check it out. Thanks in advance.

I wish you good luck; My DH was laid off from his company in September and has only had one interview in that entire time. The IT field is heavily depressed here in the Northeast. I hope he has better luck than we have had.

DD was just in the hospital for 9 days. They were desperate for nurses when we were up there. The hospital was full and they were short staffed.

DH wonders if he should go to nursing school right away? :teeth:

Don't know any companies off hand, but the Denver/Boulder area is full of technology companies.

Good luck with your search. I will pray that God leads you where He wants you whether it's staying put, or moving to some other place.

BTW: My daughter is attending Manhattan Christian College, right across the street from K-State. Great little town. She's become quite a K-State fan.

{{{HUGS}}} sweetie. I have no idea about companies that might be hiring right now.

I am thinking good thoughts that your husband will find an even better position than the one he has now, and you won't have to move.

Good luck. Most of the oil companies here in Houston have downsized theri IT departments and so the market is glutted with computer types.

What is IT? Information technology?

I don't know if this is what your husband will be looking for, but my brother, who lives in Austin, works in the computer field. He has some sort of Microsoft certification, and that's about all I know. Austin might have potential.

Good luck :)

MerryPoppins - Going into nursing is a stellar idea at least for this area of the country. There was an article in the local paper Sunday and they were discussing the plight of a gentleman who was downsized and decided to go into nursing and will be 60 yo when he graduates. But he WILL have a job. The projection in the article stated that there will be a severe shortage for the next 20+ years. I'm sure your DH has also considered that this would not open only the field of bedside nursing, but many other sub-fields as well.

Good luck to you all and God bless!

That's a wonderful attitude! I can understand where this time could be scary, yet exciting. :)

I wish your husband all the best for finding a job around your home quickly, and for something he really enjoys doing. And about the nursing: if he can handle the duties and the stress, it's an excellent, wide open field! The starting rate for an RN around the Philly area is really great! But -- so is the burnout rate from all the added stress of being understaffed and overworked. :( But if he thinks he would like it, I say "Go for it!" The last time I was in the hospital I had more male nurses than I did female. :)

How about teaching? Many universities now have programs that will certify a person after one year of teaching (going into the classroom with minimal if any training though) if they all ready have at least a 4 year degree. That's a great field and in some places, the job market is wide open. :)

Best of luck and best of wishes to him and to all of you!

 IT jobs are going down the tubes because they are being outsourced to other countries. In my husband's company, they outsource development to Argentina. I suppose it's only a matter of time for us as well.

I will never understand why we can't employ Americans first. :(

Best of luck to you. Keep that chin up!

Try the Dallas area...IT professionals in Dallas are the highest paid ITs in the state and I think they rate in the top five of the country.

That's not good :( The problem with Dallas right now is that many of the IT people are being laid off. It isn't a good time to be looking but there are still jobs, just not as plentiful and the $ isnt' as good as it was.

You certainly have a good outlook and attitude, Melissa, a big plus as you move on to that next door that will be better than now. My very best to you both and your family, my prayers will be with you.

Dan

I work for DST Systems in Kansas City and we are always hiring IT professionals. We have not been laying anyone off and business is still growing. I'm sure there are some others around KC too, I would just stay away from Sprint! ;) DH is a nurse and there is definitely a need. Many hospitals are offering large sign-on bonuses, moving costs, etc to lure more nurses in. Unfortunately, there just aren't enough nurses to meet demand.

It sounds like you have an excellent outlook on all of this! I wish your DH and you all the best as you go through this.

I wish your husband all the best in his search for a new job. I have been a nurse for 20 years and have never regretted it. While it is a profession with a shortage of nurses, I would caution anyone not to go into nursing just because there is a demand and because of sign-on bonuses, etc. I believe you must have the desire to be a nurse and your heart must be in it. Good luck to your husband and to you.

I am not sure what everyone's hubbies can do, but here is a link for Sylvan Corp. and all there other companies.

If you need help, PM/e-mail me. I know they are hiring some programmers.
