It's bad enough when they change your flights...

But then I found out they couldn't even be bothered to sit my husband and me together for the return flight?

WTH is up with that?

I sat on hold for over a half hour this morning waiting for someone in the "reassignment" dept. to see if it's possible that we sit together. I gave up and hung up. I'll call back when it's not so busy. Ha ha! :rolleyes1

:sad2: :sad2:

I know how you feel we had a terrible time for our January trip. We were 34 hours late because of a flight cancellation and then a delay. Then they scattered DH, DS, and me all over the plane. They were so rude when we asked if at least our DS 7 could sit with one of us, but they did make it happen after some eyerolling. I swore I would never fly again, but have already booked my next trip. Ours was American Airlines-and I still plan to never use them again.

I hope things work out for you!!!pixiedust: pixiedust: pixiedust:

Sometimes seat availability opens up on the day of departure (folks upgrade to 1st class, etc). If you can't get a seat assignment together ahead of time, try asking at the gate.

Been There

On our trip last summer (to go to Cedar Pointe Amusement Park in Ohio), they had us all over the place, including my DD3.

We asked at the gate. They said deal with the flight attendants.

We asked the flight attendants, and they said WE would have to ask other passangers if they would move so we could sit with out 3 year old girl.

I Was PI@@ED! Grabbed my boarding passes back from the Flight Attendant and then headed to the back of the plane to start begging. Then SHE got mad at ME and told me not to grab things from her.

Was a big mess and was able to only get my wife 1 seat next to my daughter.

On our upcoming trip to WDW in April, I have 4 separate e-tickets for the 4 of us (long story). BUT I was able to get a nice United person on the phone and got us seats all together.

And thats why I love my SWA cattle calls.

At least it's in your hands to get your seats together.

I really feel for peoples plans getting totally torn up from the airlines but you do one little thing and they want to charge you up the wazoo.

The myth of the DIS transporation board.

Your ticket does NOT gurantee you the seat you picked or even seats together.

I have never seen a GA or FA make a 3 year old sit alone however. (That said blowing off steam at them does NOT make them inclined to help you. I have seen them basically refuse to help folks who were rude to them)

I would say 'one of the myths'. Your ticket guarantees you travel from point A to point B.

It does not guarantee
  • a particular routing
  • a particular schedule
  • seat selection
  • type of aircraft
All are subject to change until time of takeoff

While I empathize with the seat assignments, this is not the way to get positive results from the GA, FA or other passengers.

I have had FAs and GAs bend over backwards to get me a seat assignment which I really didn't 'deserve', because they were empathethic to my needs and because I asked nicely. I even volunteer to disembark and take an alternate flight if my needs can't be met.

I've also had other passengers demand that I move for them; I may move based on the seat offered, but I certainly won't move for someone who demands that I do so....

I know nothing is ever guaranteed, it would just be nice that if they at least attempted to sit families together. I guess they just don't have the time to be bothered, or care. :confused3 Too bad so sad for their customers.

Are you booked on one PNR or two? if two, there is no way for them to know that you are together. It is done by computer, not by human (or hamster!) so the computer doesn't necessarily know that you are together.

I don't feel sorry for the customers (and that includes me)

Most of us are paying the airline LESS then it actually costs to fly us. So we have decided what we value and it wasn't service. It was LOW fares.

ITA we would not be able to fly as much if not for the poor service and cheap flights. I will take this over the higher prices anyday. I can count on one hand the times I have had a problem and I'll take that anyday of the week.
I fly 4 to 6 times a year for the past 8 or 9 years .This is not bad for a non-business traveler that had to become savy through trial and error.

This is exactly why I totally love my Midwest Express. It may cost a little bit more, but I can actually log into their website under my confirmation number and pick my own seats. They always assign seats together in the middle of the plane and leave it up to you to change if you want to. I would prefer to do this and pay more then leave it up to some random person deciding if my kids sit with me on the plane.

They have even been so nice in the past that they would block a seat for my DD when she was 1. We did not have to pay for the seat and it was assigned as unavailable in their system. They would only put a person in the seat if the remainder of the plan was sold out.

I feel your pain. I don't really have any advice but I have been there. On our trip home in December they changed planes and then we ended up getting seperated into three different rows (inc. ds3). DH called and was able to get his seating assignment changed so he was next to DS but I got stuck in a middle aisle/middle row seat (yuck). I think we got seperated though because dh booked the flights seperately - we paid cash for part and used skymiles for the other so their computer system didn't realize we were "linked" or part of the same party.

And as far as feeling bad for the poor airlines because we don't pay enough...don't forget they are also making a lot of money on cargo as well. According to one FA friend, the passengers are actually just icing on the cake (her words). And cargo doesn't complain. ;)

Actually, there was a 14lb box who posted here just last week that its flight time got changed. It claimed that it would never fly XYZ airline again! ;)

Have you read the airlines financial statements? I don't think they are making much on cargo. Several of them are LOSING money. So that's not much "icing on the cake".

The confirmation # is the same for the both of us. The flight number down to Orlando was changed, but since it's the same kind of plane, they left our seating assignment (the one I chose) the same. I guess the fact that there are still plenty of unsold seats left helped too.

Coming back it's a bigger plane and we're now in 10A and 20A. According to what I saw online today, it's a full flight.

I'm still going to try and get us a little closer together, if not right next to each other. If not, oh well.

I have lost my assigned seat plenty of times (even been bumped out of first class, :sad1: ) and been separated from my husband on flights many times.

Guess what? I survived!

I agree that being rude to an airline employee (grabbing boarding passes out of his/her hands) isn't exactly the way to go about getting what you want.

I'm sure we'll survive just fine too. :)

Hint: nicely ask the person in seat 20B if he would like to switch with you to seat 10A. It will probably work (unless they're sitting with someone they know in 10C). Option 2: ask the person in 10B if they want the seat in 20A.

Most people don't mind further up the plane, or moving from middle seat to an aisle or window.

If it doesn't work, I never saw it as a big deal for two adults to have to sit apart for a 2-3 hour flight. And as long as ONE parent can sit next to a young child, what's left to complain about? I was on a flight with the 3 of us (me and 2 kids) reassigned into the middle seat in three consecutive rows. The FA left it up to me to ask people to move. No one wanted the middle seat voluntarily. I smiled, said fine, just so you know that you'll be seated next to an unattended 2 year old. Guess what?, someone moved, and pretty quickly at that.

Favorite line of another friend travelling with her two girls: "it's okay, honey, I'm sure this nice man sitting next to you will help you with the barf bag". He readily agreed to switch as well.
