Disney Wonder 4 day cruise - Feb 28 - March 4, 2010

Hello! Ready for a little virtual escape? I hope this takes you there!:goodvibes

I had just gotten back from a long-awaited trip on the Magic in August, when the "Kids Sail Free" promo came out. What can I say, it hit me while I was still vulnerable! We're booked for the Dream in August 2011...but wouldn't a little Wonder to tide us over til then be great?!

A few phone calls later, and we were booked, along with my travel mates:

Me (40-ish), DS17, and DS twins 13 and my DMom
DSis (40-ish), DBIL, and DNiece 3
and DIS Friends Hannosmom, her DH, and their DIS DD ChiChiHoney

It was a looonngg six months waiting for our cruise. (but not as long as the usual 18 -24 months we usually wait!) While the rest of us were seasoned Disney Cruisers, this would be the first for DSis and her family. What fun to be able to share the excitement of their first cruise!

A brief pre-trip report:

In the weeks and days leading up to the cruise, I fed my DCL addiction by religiously studying online Navigators and menus, dreaming of each day of relaxing bliss on the Wonder. I made some cool embarkation day tshirts for our party, with the help of the talented Dissers on the Disney Magnets/Door Signs thread. We used this design on black t-shirts:

I worked tirelessly on some awesome doorsigns, especially wanting to surprise my first time cruiser family members!

We attempted the Priceline hotel bid for the Country Inn & Suites about 3 or so weeks before the cruise, but alas, it seems the Priceline inventory was sold out. A great deal if you can get it - but don't wait too long!:thumbsup2

Friday I could hardly wait for the work day to end. I hurried home and repacked all our bags (although I had been packing for a few weeks, I didn't quite finish). I was pleased with my efficiency - a duffel for DS17, who would be sharing a cabin w/ my Sis, and two large suitcases for the twins and me. And a small suitcase to get us through til our departure on Sunday!

This was DS17's winter break. The twins had unexcused absence, but I let the school know ahead of time nonetheless. Alas, DH is a school teacher himself, and could not join us. For the money though, he insisted the twins come too! Did I mention the trip cost me $400 for the 3 boys and me thanks to the Kids Sail Free promotion?!!! (plus tax and tips). The Cat 12 cabin reservation was $800 (Mom paid half), and as I said, DSis graciously had DS17 in her cabin. I just couldn't pass that up!

Finally we load up the car, kiss DH goodbye, and hit the road. We get to the end of the driveway and pull over - did I bring the passports??? I know I did...but check again just in case. Check! And we're off again...to the end of the block. Then we turn around for something - DS's iPod? Finally, we're on the road, clear weather, and make good time for about 8 hours of our 13 hour drive. :drive: We stop near Savannah to get a hotel (usually, DH and I drive through the night, but since I was by myself, I figured it best to get some sleep).

I didn't sleep too well. Too excited? Perhaps it was because of the raucous family in the next room? (for heaven's sake, it's 3 am! put those kids to bed!).
Up early the next morning, the boys fill up at the continental breakfast, and we're soon on the road again! We stop in St. Augustine at the outlets, and finally pull into my inlaws home in Vierra around 2 pm. They live just 40 minutes south of Port Canaveral. My parents are wintering about 45 minutes further south, and they and my Sister's family came to join us for a pizza dinner. Just 15 hours til the Port opens!!!

We all arrive at the Port around 9:45; I dropped the bags and boys by the curb and had to wait a few minutes for the lot to open to park. Alot of folks still exiting the ship and waiting for rides. Soon we're all inside the terminal, it was completely empty and awesome! The terminal is where the trip always begins for me!

We immediately ask about an upgrade, but the ship is sold out. Later, knowing from experience, we ask again. A Cat 6 was then available, but we decided to save our $$ and suck it up in steerage.:rolleyes1:laughing:

A little background on that: On our first 2 Magic cruises, we were able to get Cat 6 verandahs at prices we were happy with. On our last two cruises, we saved some money by reserving Cat 10s, which were just fine! Because we are a family of five, we usually need to book 2 connecting rooms, so I never could take my chances with the Cat 12 roulette. This cruise was an unexpected surprise, which we were doing on the cheap, so we took our chances with the Cat 12. No big upgrade in our cards, alas, Sis and I each received Cat 11s (no Cat 12s sleep 4). True, I was initially disappointed, having so often read on the boards about folks getting free upgrades (to categories I paid full price for), but in the end, we enjoyed our cabins just fine!:thumbsup2 Even without the split bathroom, we had no space issues (well, Sis' cabin had no steamer trunk, so I think she lacked a little needed storage space).

We settled ourselves in, DNiece age 3 watching cartoons and taking everything in. The boys found a quiet spot and settled in for a card game. Our friends Hannosmom Linda and clan arrived shortly thereafter, having taken Disney transportation from the airport hotel. Linda has sailed many DCL cruises too, so I was surprised that - like me - she still likes to get to the Port early! It really gets the trip started, looking at the ship's replica, posing with the Characters, going out on the balcony for a view of the ship.:cloud9:

DNiece greeting Mickey:

The terminal filled up QUICKLY. We were second on line to greet Mickey, walking over as soon as he came out. The Mickey picture line soon went all the way to the end of the terminal! I noticed very long character lines all week...I guess longer in part because there are fewer days (opportunities) than on a 7 day Magic, and also because the ship was so full. Often, though, it is a matter of timing - I did see some lines very short at locations other than the main atrium, like in front of the Disney theatre- perhaps just when they were setting up? Sis and niece were fortunate to run into a Princess in the hall and were granted a photo op.princess:

Soon it was time to board. We had our #2 cards, the #1s reserved for the concierge and platinum club members. Before noon, we were walking thru the Mickey ears, ready to embark!!!:yay:

Next up... chilly embarkation:
What a winter we had here in southern Virginia - just like everywhere else in the country in the days leading up to the cruise. Temperatures weren't looking too good for our sailing, but hey, it was going to be warmer than here!:goodvibes

With that kind of deal, I can see why you could not pass it up. Great TR so far. Can't wait for more.

Man! Don't you hate when someone starts a trip report then never continues it?;) I think I just like to drag it out to the next cruise...which isn't for another 18 months or so!:scared1:

It's time for our excited family to board - I still smile at the Grand Entrance and am always awed by the magnificent atrium. But no time to stop and gawk, we are quickly steered toward lunch in Parrot Cay. Our party of 11 was able to get a table together and we hit the buffet with gusto! I had dieted big time before the cruise and I was HUNGRY! (um. okay, it was really to lose those pounds I got on the Magic in August).:rolleyes1 Not toooo much variety on the buffet, but I loved the jumbo shrimp and the strawberry soup - wouldn't be a proper embarkation without them!

I noticed the head server was a man named Witt...I remember he had been our table server some years back - Bravo Witt!

After lunch I went with the twins to talk to the folks at the Oceaneer's Lab. The twins had just turned 13 days earlier, and we weren't sure they'd feel comfortable in Aloft. On the Magic, the Ocean Quest club for 'tweens had been PERFECT - they loved that! The new division of ages/activities on the Wonder included a series called "Out and About", which was for 10-12 year olds, and inlcuded a lot of sports deck activity. The twins were interested in the Out and About group.

I checked with the counselors about the age group and got several different answers. Ultimately, the answer was yes, they could do Out and About, but they had to choose b/t that and Aloft. That was really disappointing, b/c OAA didn't have activities scheduled continuously. The reasoning was a bit ridulous, but I won't get into it here. Suffice it to say, they chose Aloft and for the most part had fun there.

Meanwhile, Sis checked out both Flounders and the Oceaneer's Club. Due to potty training issues, she thought Niece would need to be in Flounders, but the OC folks were very accommodating and convinced her (and Niece!) to give OC a try. That worked great!

We usually head to the pool deck after lunch. Our typical M.O. is to wear our suits onto the ship and hit the pools before they get crowded! Alas...this was the week of frigid temperatures EVERYWHERE! And...my boys have gotten older and quickly made their way to find others on the sports deck and in Aloft. The boys found Aloft to be closed, but there were counselors there to show them around and give them information on the week's activities.:thumbsup2

Later we find our rooms - I had a great Cat 11 tucked away on Deck 5 Fwd - it was one where the door opens right into the middle of the room, rather than at the long end - I loved it! Sis was on Deck 6 Fwd - just a quick run up the steps. and our DIS friends were enjoying their Cat 6 Verandah on Deck 6 midship.

I also loved being near the fwd elevators - lots of long waits for those midship elevators! I know, I know....the stairs are a great way to burn those cruise calories! I used the stairs alot (enough huffing and puffing to set off the ship's smoke stack!)...but I did cheat sometimes.

I couldn't wait to unpack and surprise my family and friend with all the cool door signs I had worked on! Finally, my luggage arrives and I pull out the door sign folder...with all my OLD signs in it!!!:scared1: Nooooo! I was so disappointed. I re-used some of my old signs, but didn't have all the special ones for my first-time-sailor family. Ah well. Newbie Sailor Sis was on top of the ball though, and had made cool signs for our door! Dang, I forgot to take a door picture this cruise. Ah, Wonder cruises just go by sooo fast!

The Sail Away party was fun - my sons were seen briefly here and there - I do miss when they were smaller and taking all this in for the first time! Sniff.:cloud9: DSis got down on the dance floor with Niece, and they got into the groove! High energy Tisa was the crew ringleader this week - she has a great party attitude; we had just enjoyed her energy on the Magic in August! Think about how many times they do the Sail Away party, and the Pirates party, etc., yet they have fun so that we are all having fun - I always appreciate that!:cheer2:

A little Slide to the Left! then Slide to the Right! and soon the ship's horn blows When You Wish Upon a Star...and we're off! I tried to capture the horn on my cellphone to use as a ringer. Had it on my last phone which broke last month. Drove everyone in my office crazy, I'm sure, but I always knew when it was MY phone ringing!:rotfl: Alas, this phone recorder was not so cooperative...no matter, time to run to the side of the ship and wave goodbye to the Mickey Hand-wavers at the terminal!:wave2::wave:

We ate at Triton's that evening, and were pleased to get a table for 11 right in the center of the room. Our servers were Sam from the Philipines and Giordana from Croatia. Very friendly! The boys promised to try different foods this week, and each gave the Lobster Macaroni in cheese sauch a try - not bad! BIL had the escargot...I knew he would, so I thought FINALLY I'd get to try one (hate to order a whole plate when I know I won't eat it)...but alas...he was way down the other end of the table, and those escargot were gone in a blink. They did look nice though...maybe next time...

In the past I've always had a rule with the boys...dinner and the show with Mom and Dad. Alas, they've seen the shows, and even I skipped Golden Mickeys last time, so I gave them the night off. Still, I went to GM's b/c I thought I read it would be replaced soon, so I wanted to catch it one last time.

After the GMs, it was bedtime for all of us. Originally DSis had wanted to do Disney Karaoke and I had prepared the boys for this mandatory family moment...but we adults were all exhausted and decided against it! We said our goodnights and I went to check on the boys. DS17 was not in Aloft...they told me he went to Karaoke to meet his mom! I ran down to Studio Sea...indeed, he had signed up to sing a number from the B'way show of Beauty and the Beast. This lesser known song isn't in the movie, so they didn't have the music. He's not shy, he sang it a capella! I thought he did a great job! He was up first...and I've never been to Karaoke before, but I figured there must be some kind karaoke etiquette that you should stay for at least several more performances after yours. So we watched young children having a blast on stage massacring the words to Under the Sea and other favorite Disney tunes - when DS so politely says he's running to the men's room. That stinker! He never came back!:rotfl: I had fun watching the other families have their turns, but finally ducked out a while later to hit the pillow! I didn't want to burn out on the first night!

Signing in! I'm pretty sure we met up with you in the Hot tub at some point! $400 for a cruise is a pretty sweet deal!
