A few years ago I had planted 3 Hellabores in a shady spot next to my back fence. They were kind of the new trend, not easily available, and a bit pricey. I had seen some at Longwood Gardens though and I loved them, so I took the plunge. They languished a bit the first 2 years, but the literature said to expect that. One ended up dying, but the other two really started taking off.

Two years ago my DH decided to do some Extreme Weedwacking and levelled one of the Hellebores. OMG! He's done this kind of thing before. If it isn't actively flowering he thinks it's a weed. I was so dissapointed, but I had to pretend nothing happened. He gets so upset if I am not appreciative of his extra efforts to help me in the yard.

Well, last year there was still no sign of it coming back. So sad! This spring the last remaining Hellabore was full of blooms but no sign of the other one. I was sure it was gone for good. Last week when I was clearing out the spent forget-me-nots that over run that part of the yard, there it was! It was a good sized clump too! Yippee! What a tough plant!

Anyone else have a plant that came back from the dead?

Good news.

I guess I don't have the patience you do..that sucker would have been ripped out for not performing sooner. Oh and DH would have been in a heap of trouble..LOL

I'd love to see a picture of them, if you have one.

Not that I remember, usually when their dead thats it. How exciting that you found you second flower.

Now thats the one reason I do all the yard work, I have nightmares of DH with garden tools. He used to mow the lawn, all my edges were fried, plus a few flowers got mowed in the process of trying to edge too closely. When we had the rider mower that was more horrifying some of my lawn chairs got mowed along with anything that was in the way, many a garden hose became a sprinkler after DH's mowing.

With each passing year I find it harder and harder to mow this yard. GS was looking for a job to make a few dollars so I hired him. Another nightmare, I cringe watching him. He only does the back won't let anyone mow the front but me, it took me an entire year to redo this area. It would only take one mowing to undo an entire years work.

I guess I'm too fussy about the mowing I like angled lines that are straight and the grass clipping bagged and edges that are not shaved to the ground. Why don't they get it.

Glad to know your DH isn't the only one that does that. Very glad one of your Hellabores survived. Maybe a "bunny fence" around it will keep him from whacking it in the future :rotfl2: No kidding I've done it. I could never tell DH all the damage he's done. Blame it on the bunnies

One of my favorite things to do is canvass the it's dying section of the garden shops. I derive such satisfaction from taking a plant from near death to thriving and beautiful. I rescued 2 soon to be gorgeous hydrangeas from Walmart just the other day. Had I not brought the poor petunias home when I did, they would have been goners. The soil was so dry it was hard as a rock. I had to soak them for a bit before I planted them but they are just beginning to take off.

I do too! :rotfl: I just saved a climbing Piniata rose bush from Home Depot clearance. It's gone from an ugly skinny near death thing to a lush blooming beauty in only a few weeks. Just needed some TLC:flower:

I planted my nearly dead Disneyland rose in my front garden because it obviously didn't like being in a container. I pretty much forgot about it because the salvia has gone crazy and is taking over everything. I just happened to take some time to really look at the garden this week and my Disneyland rose has 2 blooms on it! I'm so excited. My boys gave me that rose for Mother's Day last year and I thought it was a gonner.
