Wednesday I was able to ride IASM and here are my thoughts. I don't want to give anything away so rest assured the following won't spoil anything, only focusing on the refurbishment / operations of the attraction.
The refurb looks fantastic! The overall job has been well worth the wait. We waited about 20 minutes in line and being that it was at night the two small "shows" were in full function; the tiny parade of dolls that marches out and the light show where every so many minutes the ride facade lights turn off and a light show is projected onto the ride that makes it look animated. Both are excellent and favs of mine so I was happy to see them both running. The holiday lights and manicured shrubs are always a welcome sight too.
-The cars seem smaller but nice, they are reminiscent of the classic cars but they have a more durable composite material that makes them feel and look like big baby toys. They are nice, the angle on the seat back might be a little too upright and with three per row it can be tight but all in all the cars are good. Best of all with a full load they don't bottom out anymore!
-The inside of the building looks really nice, fresh paint everywhere and the track path transition areas between rooms have many exit areas that are safe and easy to use if needed. You could walk off the boats directly to the emergency exits in places where it used to have nothing but a five foot drop to concrete and cables. Everything is up the latest spec for safety but it also looks so much better, in many places now you see black curtains or boards / flooring where there used to be nothing.
One thing that had really been bothering me for years was the condition of the ceiling paneling; many rooms had water damage and the stains and disformed panels were really showing neglect. Many of the ceiling panels used to be a lighter color, like you would find in a school multi-purpose room built in the 70s or 80s but now they are all black and it looks much better. I'm so glad to see the ceiling paneling fixed and improved, very nice and if they had cut this corner it would have been awful.
-The themed displays, dolls and outfits look great. I don't want to say any more! Traditionalists / purists don't worry, it's gonna be OK!
-A key point is the water path. The all-new path looks really great and it gives the attraction a new feeling as much as the new boat cars do. The track and railings that guide it look perfect and no bottoming out of course. Also the motors that you run over every so many feet are much quiter and less vibration occurs, the old ones were much more noticable. Inside and out, the show building and the water path both sparkle and are awaiting another 40 years of eager visitors!
Enjoy IASM, she had us wait 11 months but she has been worth the wait!
On a scale of 1 to 10 I give Disney an 8.5/9.0 on the refurb.
