It's a Great Big Beautiful Trip Report

Wow -- this whole day sounds so lovely!!!

So are your dream FPs good for just that day or are they good anytime?

I never thought of bringing (or buying) some luxurient bath soaps for a good bath at the end of the day...I think I will try that next time -- esp since we do 1BR DVC and they have a whirlpool tub!

Oh, yes that pork tenderloins is perfect! My DH had that the last 2 times we went and we both enjoyed it. I don't remember what I had but I know I liked it to. I like to order something different each time since the 2TS restaurants make just about everything so wonderful!

What a great way to see the fireworks! I like getting a window seat but there's something extra special to me to go outside and feel the wind and hear the booms.

Glad to hear they {may} have brought back your dessert...that will be mine next time we go....Hmmm, with that ice cream sundae concoction and now the butterscotch banana treat, will be there room for anything else??

yeah! It's only your 2nd day -- I love that feeling when you've had a great time already and there's still so much more to go!

The Dream Fastpasses are only good for the day you receive them. It worked out really well for me that day because I didn't need them at all in the morning but then I was able to fit in quite a few things in a short period of time later in the day.

It's true that being outside and hearing the percussion of the fireworks is a cool part of the show!

Every time I eat a meal at Disney I wonder where I am going to put the next one! It always works out somehow. :thumbsup2

Great update! My DH's favorite dessert is the Banana Butterscotch Buzz also, let's hope it's coming back!

Fingers crossed! I don't know if the September menu on allears was from earlier than my visit, but I'm hoping not!

What a lovely day!! It was a great Disney Day!

When people who don't know about Disney expressed bewilderment that I was going for 10 days ("What will you do?" they asked) I told them I would be happy and busy every moment I was there.

Sounds like a perfect day! California Grill sounds and looks yummy!!

Coordinating dinner with fireworks really is the bonus - great food and a great viewing spot. I found out about it by accident when I happened to book a dinner at the right time. I was in a table by the window and it was magic when they dimmed the lights and piped in the sound and the show unfolded right in front of me.

September 7th - No Hurricane, but I’ll Take a Typhoon!

Typhoon Lagoon and Animal Kingdom were the contenders for today’s touring. I got up early enough for rope drop at AK and checked the weather as there was worrisome hurricane activity to keep track of. The weather channel advised me that this was going to be a flawless water park day, with more questionable weather coming in over the next few days. I happily changed the alarm to rope drop for Typhoon Lagoon which gave me an extra hour to sleep and get ready.

I had packed a bag with sunscreen, towels, magazines, water and water shoes last night, so I just needed to fuel up (coffee, fruit and a few bites of Krispie treat) while checking the map of Typhoon Lagoon to make a plan. I had great memories of a few trips there long ago, when I traveled from frosty Boston and luxuriated in the tropical garden atmosphere, zippy slides, and most of all enjoyed the glorious relaxation of floating around and around in Castaway Creek.

I pre-sunscreened before leaving and wore my swimsuit under a cover up. I assumed I would get dry pretty quickly when I was ready to go, so didn’t bring a change of clothes. It was a quick drive over from the CBR. I bought a ticket at the front entrance and got a locker so I could stow my wallet and keys. I joined the small crowd waiting at the path to the wave pool and had a fun conversation with a family from the U.K. who were crazy for the water parks. They spend many days out of their trip at the two water parks, enjoying the hot weather they don’t see much of at home. I got their advice on Crush ‘n’ Gusher which was, “Keep your bum up!” which I thought was extremely sensible.

When the ooga-ooga horn and voice of announcements welcomed us in I went left and looked for a chair in a place that would be shady as the day wore on. I tucked in up under the trees, found a kind volunteer to put sunscreen on my back and then splashed off to Mayday Falls. It was touted as the longest slide, but also turned out to be very bumpy bumpy which was fine once but didn’t lure me back for a second ride. I moved on to the other tube slides, going down Keelhaul Falls three or four times before heading over to Gang Plank Falls, the family raft ride. I didn’t have to wait very long before a twosome came along who didn’t mind my riding with them and in fact were grateful to have my help hefting the large ungainly wobble of a raft up the hill. During the short ride I struggled to keep from sliding over and getting to know my new friends more abruptly than was appropriate on such short acquaintance. (I totally thought of you, Lynn!)

I decided to explore the rest of the park after that. I last visited about 15 years ago and I remembered it being larger, more lush and more exotic than I found it today. I remember being in bliss with the water, warmth and tropical theming and all the fun things to do. Today it seemed smaller and more sedate that I remembered, like when you go back to your childhood summer haunts when you’re grown up and find that the huge mountain you climbed is a rather unimpressive hill, and that the endless lake is a little swimming hole.

I enjoyed the beach themed ambient music as I walked the path to the Storm Slides and then rode them one after another. I then discovered that I had lost interest in climbing stairs, at least for the moment. Perhaps my business of the future will be a Geezer’s Water Wonderland, where all the rides will have elevators. This is another one of the things that was different in my memory, as I apparently magically appeared at the tops of all the attractions last time I was here.

Leaving the Storm Slide area I saw an entrance to Castaway Creek with lots of tubes available, so I launched into the creek for a floatathon. Photopass is new since I was last here and it cracked me up to come across the photographers in their outfits waist deep in the creek. I went around once, admiring the props and sets along the way and then decided it was time to get out and tackle Crush ‘n’ Gusher. When I got to the pool at the base of the ride, the Dream Squad were there handing Dream Ears to people coming out of the slides. People were happily putting them on their wet heads and going back out into the rest of the park.

I got my two person tube and made the slow waiting climb to the top. It turned out there was only one slide that I could go down as a single, so I loaded onto the raft, kept my bum up, and launched. It was super fun and made me laugh and laugh:

image210.jpg

There was only one gusher I could ride by myself, so I got my cute little wristband Photopass card from the photographer and went back out to the main path. Shark Reef was close by, so I picked up my mask and snorkel at the entry booth and joined the little group at the edge of the pool waiting for the instructional session. I’m snorkel ready so I was off the edge into the water right away. I’m glad I remembered how cold the water was at this attraction because the first time it was shocking which detracted from my enjoyment of the short time in the water. I mingled with the denizens of the deep, going as slowly as possible to maximize viewing of fast darting and slow lumbering fish, as well as the sleek muscular sharks, and then clambered out on the other side.

I reentered Castaway Creek and floated around one more time, then headed out to my chair. I read for a little bit and watched the antics in the wave pool and then decided I was adequately waterfied. It was time to head back to the resort to shower before spending the afternoon at the Animal Kingdom and having my second Jiko dinner.

I haven't been to the water parks in about 5 years or so -- thanks for these memories! sounds like a fun-filled day!

Thanks for sharing your day at the water park! I laughed when you thought of me! I have a lot of strategies to avoid my embarrassing situations next summer.
I love the picture of you on the slide.
It looked like a fun morning, but what I really want to know is, What were you reading?!?! :)

It was fun to be there when it was hot enough and with days enough to spend some time at a water park again. Next time that happens I'll have to try Blizzard Beach.

Your description of your water park moments made me laugh so hard - then I got to channel you!
I can't remember now exactly which of my reading materials I had with me, but it was some lovely light thing like Bazaar or Vogue or Elle Decor - perfect sun and fun reading. I was also reading Steve Martin's book, Born Standing Up, while I was there. I highly recommend it. He's a super smart, interesting guy and it's fascinating to hear him describe how and why his comedy evolved the way it did. My other trip book that I never broke into was the third one in the Golden Compass series, which I'm actually reading for the second time.

Ah, the water parks........great fun! :beach: Do they still have those yummy donuts?

Yes, indeed they do! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Although I didn't indulge, I lingered by the counter and admired them.

ooh, donuts at the water park??

I love donuts -- I basically have to stay away from them b/c I end up eating like 3 of them a day!

Even more dangerous, these are tiny freshly made on the spot donuts! They are one of those can't be around them foods for me too!

We always talk about going to Typhoon Lagoon and then we laze out and end up at the resort pool instead (rationale ... $80 can make a pretty good dent in dinner).

Your update was great and it sounds like a ton of fun! Maybe someday Jay and I will finally go check it out for ourselves. :confused3

The surfeit of things to eat and do is one of the things that keeps us coming back for ever more!

I used to have the biggest crush on Steve Martin! Smart and funny gets me every time.

September 7th - A Walk on the Hot and Wild Side

I have been crazy for the Animal Kingdom since I first set foot here. It makes sense that as a veterinarian I would love to see a great park dedicated to animals and the natural world, but I am also wild for it because it is full of art and rich visual detail. The design of the animal habitats allows some phenomenal viewing and photography opportunities. I usually spend several packed full days here and still haven’t seen everything.

As I made my way in from the parking lot, the heat was an impressive force. I had a single bottle of water with me that would be gone in no time. It felt like I really was setting out on an expedition. The gentle background music welcomed me as I turned right after the turnstiles and said hello to the Macaws and other denizens of the Oasis. Crossing the bridge to Discovery Island I noticed how much the trees have grown up since my early visits. I was headed to Asia and Expedition Everest when I noticed A Bug’s Life had a very short wait time listed. I hadn’t seen it since my first visit, so decided to start with the smallest of creatures and work my way up from there.

The Tree of Life invites much investigation, and I was uncharacteristically impatient with the slow moving people in front of me. I was interested in getting into the Tree, out of the heat, and not missing the start of the show which was any moment now. They ambled and stalled and crawled. By the time we got into the pre-show area the doors had shut for the next show and we had to wait a cycle. I tried not to be annoyed with the wait and did enjoy looking at the mock Broadway posters in the lobby. Bug specs in hand, I waited amidst the roots of the tree until the doors opened toward me and then went in and found a seat on a log in the front row. The butterfly curtain was an especially cool effect and since I am a fan of low forms of humor the show had many jokes that I appreciated. No children in my vicinity melted down from bug fear.

Exiting the tree after the show, I walked the path around the base of the Tree to head on to Asia. I stopped by the Siamangs for a moment and watched the baby who was a wizened looking little infant the last time I was here casually hanging on while mom rocketed around the temple structure. Here is a picture of the tiny tyke from January of this year:

Now the baby is much bigger!

DSC_0008-2.jpg

And then there was the mountain, and the Yeti artifacts and the very brief wait in the single rider line for Expedition Everest.

DSC_0012-1.jpg

DSC_0014-2.jpg

After my first encounter with the Yeti I stopped while hiking away from the Florida Himalayas for a chocolate-vanilla swirl cone and water and thus provisioned headed over to the Maharajah Jungle Trek.

DSC_0032-2.jpg

I had to finish my cone before going inside which lead to a brain freeze moment, but that was better than the feeling I had just before that which was that my brain might just melt in the heat. The bats were slowly fanning themselves with their wings and the tigers were doing what all sensible creatures do in the heat of the afternoon, lying in furry heaps of dedicated siesta concentration.

I walked slowly through the temple set and enjoyed the story in the beautiful murals.

DSC_0027-1.jpg

No story would be complete without a hidden Mickey.

DSC_0023-1.jpg

I cruised the shops of Discovery Island, both because I like the shopping in this area of the park and because I needed a heat break. It was getting close to parade time, so when I found a nice curbside location I stopped and rested and tried not to melt further.

This parade is full of delightfulness. The inventiveness of the costumes and creatures, the many funny details on the character floats and the infectious music never fail to make me want to go home and build a cool parade animal, and I love that they put so many guests on the floats.

If I were going to the jungle I would definitely want my Donald Duck themed bathtub with me. Minnie must be an awesome campground hostess.

DSC_0047-2.jpg

When the parade was over I realized that I was near Pizzafari and decided to go in and take a look around, since I had never been inside. Wow! There was one huge room after another with amazing murals. Each of the rooms had a theme. A cast member who was sweeping up walked around with me and told me about her favorites. She said she loved coming to work each day in this art filled space. Not your average pizza joint! These pictures are from the room demonstrating protective coloration.

I slowly made my way out of the park, back in the tram to my car and then over to the Lodge. Today I had the time I didn’t on my previous visit to walk through the lobby and fire pit area and admire the big everythings - columns, ceremonial pieces, rocking chairs, fireplaces, masks and lamps, before heading outside to look at the Savannah areas. There was a baby giraffe, all stilty legged cuteness, and birds with funny brightly hued red headbands that made them look like the Rockettes of bird world.

DSC_0118.jpg

After hanging out chatting animals with the CM, it was time for me to check in for dinner at Jiko.

Next up - Dinner with DISers!

September 7th - Jiko

Imagine a clear sky filled with the soaring wings of graceful birds and fields punctuated by antelope bounding on spring loaded legs. Watch the deliberate progress of the precisely stepping giraffe. Now think of settling in comfortably to eat a long anticipated meal. Join me for the rewards of dinner and companions of the road after a long day of journeying.

The yellow sunlight of a day far away from Florida filled Jiko when I arrived from the resort savannah. I checked in at the podium and waited in the lounge just long enough to get out my journal but not to make any notes. I was escorted to my seat which was the same table I’d had a few nights ago. Like last time, there was a couple at the two-top to the right of mine perusing their menus. My prior dinner’s couple were happy DVC owners from California who were totally into food. We had enjoyed a meal’s worth of time chatting about the joys of Disney and the great food scene that has come into being.

Once at my familiar table I got busy getting out my camera and making notes while studying the menu. My dinner neighbors and I fell into conversation and somehow the topic of Disney internet sites came up. We quickly confirmed that we were all DISers and they asked what threads I posted on. I mentioned Picture of the Day because it seemed like the most general interest one I frequent. The fellow of the couple said that we would probably know each other then, since he posted there too. It turns out he was Code and she was Lease, and I certainly remembered Code’s incredible pictures. He’s one of the super achievers of the thread. Then of course we had to laugh about how we both had cameras out and ready, and journals for notes. They were actually posting a daily report to their trip report from their hotel. Since they said they planned their days around doing every EMH early and late, and fitting other outside park activities into the left over moments I was very impressed that they had the energy to make that happen.

They ordered their dinner shortly after I arrived, and then it was time for me to get serious. During my previous dinner I had seen one of the salads and it looked fantastic so I knew I would have a salad course. The bacon cheddar flatbread totally caught my interest. This time my main course had to be the classic Filet with macaroni and cheese with red wine sauce. When I placed my order, my CM gently indicated that I was ordering way more food than a regular human would be able to eat. I assured him I was counting on leftovers of glory. Just this afternoon I had a delectable satisfying lunch of California Grill pork tenderloin before heading to the Animal Kingdom.

It was fun to see Code and Lease work as a team, passing the camera back and forth for shots of their food. Lease took notes. We had a terrific time talking Disney. They were true kindred spirits and I enjoyed hearing their stories about their history together and their Disney times. There was also much food happiness.

The breads at Jiko are unique, as is the spread that comes with them. There is a slightly sweet evenly textured soft bread and another that is more regularly bread like. The spread is flavored with something slightly tangy and slightly sweet whose exact origin escapes me now. Next time I will write it down.

My first course was flatbread with bacon, Tillamook cheddar, rocket and zough yogurt.

DSC_0121.jpg

The underlying bread was a lovely platform for the hearty bacon, cheddar, greens and yogurt topping. The yogurt had an herb flavoring and slight kick. This flatbread would be a good friend on a cool fall evening after a long day at work.

Salad was next - Mixed greens with toasted Lavosh and lemon dressing

DSC_0123-2.jpg

The salad was beautiful, and even featured edible flowers. It was also humongous. There was a variety of vegetables as well as the greens and toasted bits, and the dressing was light but flavorful.

And then, the oak grilled filet mignon with macaroni and cheese and red wine sauce.

DSC_0696-1.jpg

The silky deeply flavored wine sauce blended perfectly with the tender cheese coated little elbow macaronis and the succulent bites of perfectly cooked filet. I am in love with whoever first thought of putting the mac and cheese with a fantastic filet. It's a perfect combination of comfort and decadence.

I talked over the dessert menu with the CM, but I was rather beyond full. Code and Lease did have dessert so I had vicarious dessert enjoyment as well as having truly enjoyed their company and conversation.

They were talking about going to the Adventurer’s Club after dinner and I thought about forging on out for an extended evening myself, but decided to head back to the resort. I retrieved my car from the valet after a gift shop cruise and headed home for my next to last night at CBR.

When I got there, the warm night was beckoning so I walked over to Old Port Royale and watched the IllumiNations fireworks starburst the sky over Aruba. Then it was back to the room to download photos, have a warm bubbly bath and go to sleep so my next day could begin.

Tomorrow’s adventures:
Hollywood Studios and my first ever ride on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
50’s Prime Time Cafe
Beaches and Cream
Mini Epcot evening

September 8 - Day 5 - Is today the first day of the rest of my Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Life?

When the alarm went off this morning I didn’t exactly feel awake, but I did want to get up right away so I could hustle to rope drop at HS. The challenge of the day was to get myself onto Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. I came to the thrill ride thing later in life and have not yet mastered the enjoyment of going upside down. I had promised myself to try the ride this trip (after not quite making it last December) so perhaps today was the day! I took a lovely wake up shower then checked in with the weather obsessed channel and Stacy while I had coffee and breakfast. It was predicted to be a hot and sunny day, with endless amounts of top 7 fun. After my experience with the heat yesterday, I made sure to re-soak my cooling neck wrap before setting out.

(Let me insert a plug here for the beautiful powers of the cooling neck wrap. Yesterday when it was a million degrees at the AK, I stayed relatively comfortable by periodically icing my wrap. What bliss a newly iced neck wrap was! Mine had been made in ultra cute Nemo fabric by a gal I found here on the DIS, so it was not only fantastically effective but adorable as well. I wore it every day, and never even opened the package of the mister I bought for the trip.)

I made the ultra short drive from the CBR to HS. I was parked close enough to walk in and was first in line at my turnstile. I waited there near a family with awesome organizational qualities. One of my favorites of their many cool accouterments was a small laminated map of the park attached to their stroller with a retractable line. The kids amused themselves by pulling it out and looking at it and then letting it jump back.

As I looked around the crowd (small but eager, especially the teenagers next to me all braces, long legs and excitement) I saw the cast member who was looking for a couple to be in the opening show. As I watched her talk to people one couple actually turned her down! Perhaps like me they were obsessed with making it to TSM as soon as possible.

I waited at the rope with the other early birds (long legged teens now bouncing up and down), watched the streetmosphere players welcome us to Hollywood and got ready for the power walk to Pixar Place. The crowds were light, but there were still people who walked as though there was some dire threat to their getting on their ride of choice if anyone was near them. I almost took an elbow to the abdomen from a gal who was wildly clearing the area in her vicinity with forcible arms.

I got a fastpass without incident and walked through the queue of happy childhood memories, past Mr. Potato Head busy telling jokes and interacting with the crowd, and up into the carnival tent entrance into Andy’s bedroom. I saw new details today - the sweeping searchlights of the carnival grounds were in spirograph patterns and Mr. Potato Head was manning (or would that be potato-ing?) a Cotton Candy booth. I learned about some new easter eggs, improved my score and then ran around to get back in the queue. The crowds were so light that I rode four times in a row before the standby wait became prohibitive.

My fastpass was 30 minutes to maturity, so I walked over to the far end of Sunset Boulevard. There was the big guitar sculpture pointing the way toward my destiny. I ventured into the plaza in front of the ride. I still had apprehensions and I’d always chickened out before. Last December I went so far as to get a fastpass for the group ride during Mousefest, but when I missed the group ride because I was at another event I didn’t want to go by myself. Now that I had experience as a roller coaster security blanket it seemed mandatory to add this ride to my resume. After all, even if I completely hated it, it would be over in a short minute plus, and then I would get to see the queue. The standby wait was 10 minutes. My fate was sealed. The first reward was the cool view of the Tower of Terror from the outside part of the queue.

I walked right into the waiting area just outside the recording studio and looked at the memorabilia while waiting for the doors to open. This pre-show reminded me of the old back lot studio tour, and I enjoyed being able to see an attraction that was new to me. I loved the back alley loading area and tried to take in all the cool atmosphere and not worry too much about what was about to happen. I was in the first car, second row, which seemed like a good spot to me. I got my stuff stowed and protective harness locked and then we were off. The countdown part to the takeoff was just like the lead in to my first ride on the Tower of Terror with an ever building adrenaline fueled state of anticipation and hard pounding heart. I shrieked when the limousine rocketed forward into the Hollywood night.

It turned out to be great fun to rush through the dark and see the glowing landmarks all around. I especially loved the corkscrew section. I didn’t even look that scared:

DSC_0174.jpg

Then I commemorated the moment via photopass:

image246.jpg

My fastpass for TSM was just then good, so I walked back over to Pixar Place, got another fastpass and then rode again. My score was still increasing (I had no idea I was this competitive) and I was still seeing new things in the carnival backdrops and sets.

Then I wanted to go on RnRC again so I could appreciate the queue and the ride with less apprehension. Rode in the back this time, which I didn’t like as much. I had a little time before my fastpass for TSM would be ready, so I visited One Man’s Dream.

I love this attraction for its terrific displays of the evolution of all things Disney and never tire of looking at the cool models and artifacts. As a mini-museum it really hits the spot. I also love the movie and see it every visit as a moment of tribute to the fantastic gifts that Walt and Roy Disney and their phenomenal collaborators have given to all of us. When we are surrounded by dedication, passion, inventiveness and creativity in the parks I know that they flow in a direct current from the minds and hearts of the original creators.

At the risk of dating myself far too accurately, I am of the generation of girls who were dying to be in Karen's shoes, and thought that Cubby was the cutest thing ever.

DSC_0219.jpg

Then it was time to ride TSM one last time for the day. The cars stopped early in their whirling transition from one game to the next for a couple of the games, so I didn’t get to play in all the sections. When we got off I asked if I could get another fastpass, and they just had me wait for a few minutes then put me back on the ride, so I got a bonus round.

My lunch ADR had rolled around so I walked over to the Prime Time Cafe and waited only a few moments in the lounge area before being seated. Here are the skinnies enjoying the classic 50’s decor.

DSC_0240-1.jpg

I'm not sure what was happening with this family, but it was something like, "Pink? Why did the kitchen have to be so pink!"

DSC_0234-1.jpg

I actually most wanted to order a sandwich, as it was such a hot day a hot meal seemed like too much but I had read so much about the pot roast here on the DIS that I ordered it even though I didn't quite want it. It was luscious as promised. Hearty comfort food with meat, vegetables and mashed pototoes with brown gravy. The pot roast was rich and meltingly tender. The mashed potato and gravy combination was my favorite part.

DSC_0226-1.jpg

I was too full after eating every bit of my meal to attempt dessert, although one of my favorite props here is the View Master dessert menu. I looked longingly at the pictures of each of them with total appreciation.

After wandering through the restaurant appreciating the decor I hit the trail past Gertie the dinosaur headed toward the other side of the park.

Star Tours posted a 20 minute wait which seemed ridiculously long, so I passed by and back around the back of Muppets, where I saw this:

I kept going back toward the central plaza and jumped on the Great Movie Ride. It would be great if they would update this ride with the new generation of animatronics. I always go once on a visit, but some of it is really pathetic. Especially in this weather, it qualified as a perfect sit down break in AC, and I liked seeing what new details I could pick out in the Indiana Jones section. When I came out into the plaza, people were gathering for the parade so I went to TOT and Towered twice, getting great suspended in air time on both rides. I hated this ride the first time I tried it, partially because I kept my eyes shut. For some reason I decided I had to try again, and from there it went to the top of my ride list.

The parade was winding down when I emerged from the old hotel. I decided to walk to the exit past the parade and head back for some resort time. I saw a little bit of the action - it is a different sort of parade with the stationary shows at specific locations. It is an active, brightly colored extremely kinetic experience. There were hundreds of tiny brightly colored bouncing balls everywhere. When the parade ended there were CMs clearing them off the roofs of the shops on Hollywood Boulevard and throwing them down to the guests below.

My feet had started to hurt so I took the tram to save some steps and drove back to my Caribbean hideaway. I iced my feet, had some fruit and nibbled on my Krispie treat and then took the skinnies out for a cruise around the resort. It was suddenly my last day here (how did that happen?) so I wanted to enjoy the beautiful grounds one more time.

They loved the hammock on Caribbean Cay.

I went to make my daily check on the progress at the pool and the bartender at the pool bar told me it would be open tomorrow! When I told her I was checking out she told me I could use the pool on check out day and to just hang on to my key if I wanted to come by. Although it was tempting, since I would be checking in at the Poly, I would probably just save the new pool to be a special part of my December visit.

I went to the beach at Aruba and hung out in my favorite hammock in the sultry afternoon. I even dozed off for a bit. When I was finally willing to get up from my cozy floaty perch it was all at once emphatically time for a cheeseburger and ice cream.

In no time I was driving through the gates of the Beach Club. I love the colors of this resort. I don’t normally identify with pastels but they hit some great wavelengths here that are terrific to be around. I walked through the beautiful expansive lobby and around the Cape May Cafe to Beaches and Cream.

I sat at the counter this time, and my CM remembered waiting on me last January so we had a nice chat. The food here is basic classic diner fare. I’ve had more spectacular cheeseburgers, but the atmosphere is fun and the sundaes are levitating forces.

Of course I had to have another No Way Jose. Equal amounts of fudgy peanut butter bliss as last time. No picture, but it was the same fabulous sweet goblet of delight.

When the sugar rush hit I decided to walk to Epcot, do a little country sightseeing and see IllumiNations before heading home for the night. I went over through the International Gateway, and decided to go left to start with. I shopped in the U.K. and coveted lovely hardback editions of the original Mary Poppins books. The stories are fantastical, and Mary Poppins is a rather dark and edgy character. There is a quality to the books that is missing from the movie. I wanted to buy them all right then, but I still have some of them from my childhood, so decided to wait until I knew which ones I needed to have a complete collection. I looked at cool jewelry, toys and woolens.

I went by Canada and admired the variety of moose and bear related things available at their mercantile and then made my way to the viewing area directly across the lagoon from the American Adventure to wait for IllumiNations. I had my gorillapod with me so decided to stake out a spot and take some pictures of the fireworks. I found a lovely trash can/camera podium and spent some time getting things set up. The crowd slowly built (although nothing compared with other times of year) and sat in the open area between the two Gateway shops. A little boy named Cameron was completely fascinated by the camera and tripod so we had a lively discussion about what I was doing. A nice CM came and asked if I knew that it was likely that people would stand up once the show started. He said it happens about 75% of the time and he didn’t want my prep work to be in vain. I was expecting that so was ready, but appreciated his consideration.

We waited as the sky darkened and the lamps were lit. The pre-show announcements started periodically warning of the lowering of the lights and asking everyone to stay put so as not to come across an unexpected injury. The clock ticked on and 30 seconds before the start of the show the skies abruptly opened. Giant super soaker raindrops surged down. I jumped up with most of the rest of the crowd, shoved my camera under my bag and clothes and ran into the fortunately very near Gateway gift shop. The fireworks launched and the show went on while the crowd soggily regrouped. I got everything stowed away, put on my rain jacket and ventured outside to watch.

The crowds were fairly deep at the doorways and under the overhang of the shop. I watched for a bit, but couldn’t see that well so went back in and shopped for a few minutes instead. I checked back outside and the rain was slowing down. I decided to walk and view at the same time, so headed back to the International Gateway while watching the end of the show.

I slogged back to the car and drove back to the resort. It wasn’t hard to pack knowing that in the morning I’d be moving to the Polynesian. Aloha bound, I loaded everything I could into the car so that I could make a quick transition in the morning. Tomorrow morning features another early morning Crystal Palace breakfast, so I’ll be getting up extra early to check in, check my luggage and then head to the Magic Kingdom.

I am a fan of the tropical floral decor at the CBR so before bed I took a few moments to appreciate what will be Nemo’d by the time I come back again. Then I set my alarm for extra early o-dark thirty and tucked in to sleep.

September 9th - Day 6 - Rough Start, Terrific Finish

I woke with a start this morning, instantly aware that it was too light out for me to have been awakened by the 5:45 alarm I had set last night. I grabbed my clock to see it was 7:38, super late for my plan to finish packing, check in at the Poly and get over to my 8:15 Crystal Palace breakfast. I had made the classic alarm clock error and set the alarm for 5:45 pm. Ugh - not very magical.

Frustrated, I cancelled the CP reservation as it was abundantly clear I wouldn't get there in time. I rushed through a shower, skipped coffee (never a good plan) and finished packing. I didn’t feel very well, kind of foggy and not right and at first thought it was a caffeine deficiency. I toted my stuff to the car in one trip and started driving toward the Polynesian. As I drove I realized the ickiness I was feeling was the first stage of a migraine. I’ve had super bad migraines this year, the throwing up all day kind, but fortunately have a new medication that can keep things under control if taken early enough after the symptoms start. As soon as I got to the Poly I parked and dug out the hopefully magic restoring migraine medicine.

I walked through the garden and fountains of the entryway and then past the whooshing automatic doors of the lobby to check in. The banks of tropical greens and flowers and sounds of rushing water made it feel as though I had moved from one outdoor space into another. I had a great CM who was able to meet my request for the third floor of the Tokelau longhouse with a room that was ready. Wahoo! I wanted to get over to the park, so I checked my bags and got on the monorail, figuring I would spend some early hours in the park and then come back to get settled in whenever I was ready.

By the time I got to the turnstiles I had only missed opening by ten minutes, and the migraine had mostly receded leaving me just hungry and slightly fuzzy headed. One of the benefits of being off schedule is seeing and doing unexpected things. Chip and Dale were doing a meet and greet by Roy and Minnie so I stopped to sop up some manic Chipmunk energy.

I enjoyed the stroll down Main Street (right down the middle, as the song gaily emphasized) and crossed through Liberty Square on my way to the Briar Patch. Splash Mountain was a particular success for me this morning because I got to enjoy singin' critters in their cute habitats, the gradual build of the ominous threat of a potentially unhappy ending, the pause for the fantastic view over the Magic Kingdom at the top of the flume and then the careening of the log down the chute while not taking much of a splash. Happily dry, I stopped by Big Thunder and then walked on Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh before totally running out of steam. I crossed over to the Crystal Palace to see if they had any openings for a late breakfast, but they were super busy so no puffed French Toast or Pooh and friends for me today. I walked over to Tomorrowland and took one ride on Buzz Lightyear and then decided to go back to the hotel and see if I could get into breakfast at Kona Cafe. Macadamia pineapple pancakes and coffee suddenly seemed like the best and most necessary things in the world.

I took the sweet little resort ferry via the Grand Floridian and at that early hour was the only guest from the Magic Kingdom to the Grand Floridian. I love a princess boat! I stretched out on the bench in the stern and watched the monorails go around and all the many ferries stream across the lagoon, delivering the happy guests to their magical destinations.

I was in luck at the Kona Cafe so had a fabulous breakfast and much needed coffee. There were special Halloween decorations on the open kitchen bar:

I ordered the Big Kahuna again and enjoyed it even more than last time, both because I could anticipate the wonderfulness that was coming and because I was famished. Prior to demolition of the breakfast:

(I could go for hot and juicy sausage, happy pancakes with delectable melting macadamia nut-pineapple butter, eggalicious french toast, crispy bacon, fluffy biscuits, perfectly browned home fries and exactly right eggs right now!)

Feeling refreshed, restored and less fragile than earlier in the day I walked over to Tokelau to check out my room and get my bags delivered from bell services.

The lush landscaping and fun surprises in the gardens make walking here a special treat. I love the resort feel of this hotel and enjoy making my way around the property. There are great views everywhere and there is something extra special about being immersed in views of the Magic Kingdom, Grand Floridian, Contemporary Resort, and monorails and ferries. It is very satisfying to see all the life of the park and resorts going on all around.

I’d previously been in the Fiji and Tahiti longhouses, and was looking forward to trying something new. I was hoping my room would be toward the lagoon end of the longhouse so I that I might catch a small water view from the balcony, and was excited when I got out of the elevator and saw that my room was indeed in that direction.

I called for my bags and then explored the room. I was greeted by a familiar towel Mickey and there were some other towel pals there as well. The skinnies instantly bonded with the towel animals:

The rooms at the Poly are huge and I love the comfy chairs and luxury of space. My balcony did have a sideways view of the lagoon:

One of the very nice things about this room was that it felt extremely private. Looking out through the sliding doors from most of the room I saw only the colorful end face of the other longhouse, trees and greenery. I was getting happier by the moment and when my bags arrived I contentedly unpacked and set up my little breakfast making zone.

It was hot and sunny and I was due to go to MNSSHP late this afternoon so when I finished settling in it seemed like a perfect time to chill on the beach, go swimming and relax before the evening’s frightfully good activities. I packed a beach bag and decided to exit from the lagoon end of the building and walk along the beach to look for an open hammock for my first stage of afternoon relaxation.

When I walked out to the stairs at the lagoon end of the longhouse, this is what greeted me:
