Hi!

I was wondering with the Itouch if you can get on the internet and also can you download the same apps as the Iphone? Can you take pictures or video?

With the Iphone, Rogers, Bell and Apple all seem to have similar plans. The Rogers plan allows 500MB of data a month, then the next plan is 1G. Is 500MB alot of internet time? Which provider is better?
I currently have a pay as you go phone, so this is all new to me.

Thanks! :goodvibes

iPhone and iPod Touch are similar with few differences.

iPod touch has no camera, no phone or isntant messaging, can only connect to the internet via wifi, up to 64 GB of storage, iPhone up to 32 GB of storage

Since 2007 in June Apple has always announce improvement to the iPhone, my advice is but an unlocked phone for a few months and do some research with Telus, Rogers, Fido on Bell.

As for the mobile data plans I have a phone with out a data plan and only connect to the net via wifi.

Love my iTouch - just like the laptop you wonder how you lived w/out it.

Have had it a year now & it's really my go to item. It's a blast.
And once you buy it, your only expenses are any apps you choose.
We have Rogers & all the i{hone plans were more than we wanted to pay so we kept our non-fancy phones & use the iTouch for everything (especially on the go) except phone calls.

Us too - I love my itouch (as do my dh, 15yo and almost 10yo) but opted out of the iphone b/c of the cost of the plans - I don't need anything fancy so have a cheap cell that does the job and use my touch for everything else. Was great on our long flights to have a movie on them too.

Most of the apps I've chosen are the free ones and there sure are lots and lots of free ones!!

You can download the Skype app for the iTouch. With a compatible headset and a new generation iTouch you can use Skype over wifi. I have a first generation and it is more difficult to get it to work without hacking.

I highly recommend checking Apples refurb section on Apple.ca you can get very good deals on ipods (anything mac for that matter). The refurbs look brand new, have been tested, and have the same warranty as the new products. I have bought my iTouch, a Macbook Pro, and an AppleTV from refurb, and have been happy with every product. The only time I have bought a new product (macbook), from apple it arrived DOA and I had to get a replacement.:rotfl:

Also if you collect airmiles you can go through http://www.airmilesshops.ca to get your airmiles.:thumbsup2

Dangler,

I have a Rogers voice plan only and upgraded my phone to an iphone and kept the same plan. I just use wifi. I also got my wife an iphone and she is on pay as you go. As long as you are with Rogers pay as you go, you can set up any phone on it. You just have to get the phone. iPhones can be expensive with no plan, but I got my wife's brand new sealed in the box on usedottawa.com for a little more than buying an ipod touch. Either way, both ipod and iphone are great with the app store. Very good to pre-occupy our 2 and 5 year boys waiting at doctor's office or wherever. Great kids (if you have any) apps and we keep a few Backyardigan episodes on there too.

If you live near Toronto or Ottawa the Apple Store will match other stores prices. I highly recommend Apple Care. Not only does it extend your warranty it covers your headphones, USB cable and call centre support.

Thanks for asking this question! I've been wondering too!

I'm on Telus and Telus, like Bell just got the i pnone. I'm eligable for a new phone in Jan. and looking at the i phone. I have a Mac, so it would be very compatible.

For those of you who say they just use wifi, how freq. can you get a connection? Would you have to be home, or find a wifi spot like Starbucks?
I don't know how easy it would be to get a wifi connection.

For the OP, I'd go for Telus if it's avail. back east, or Bell before I'd go to Rodgers!

It is pretty easy to find a wifi connection. Coffee shops often have them. I live in NS and don't usually have a problem. You can get an app wifi tracker that finds connections pretty easily.

I would like a iPhone, but I never use a cell phone so I just can't justify the price, but my iTouch is great.

!

my phone is coming up with telus too, but wondered if the iphone monthly charges for internet are like :scared1: I have not looked into that yet.

As for the free access. i didnt know you can do that with the iphone. that is interesting. Does anyone have details how to get the free wifi area on the iphone :confused3

I have an iphone through Rogers.

I got the $30 data plan and even though I surf daily on it, I hardly make a dent in my allotted usage each month. I can't use the Wifi at the office so I just use the 3G network. It works great.

So my total phone bill with taxes is about $65. It's alot for a cell phone but I don't think I could live without it now.

I believe if you get an i phone thru a phone co discount, for $199, it has to include the data plan. I think you'd have to buy the phone at full price to just use it as a cell phone without data plan. Full price is alot. My guess would be you can dropthe data plan when your contract runs out.
Personally, I'd like to be able to use the internet, e mail, etc without having to find a wifi spot. At home I can just use my computer. Dunno, I have until Jan. to figure it out!!

The phone will tell you if it senses a wifi signal. If you have password then you can use it. I'm guessing if it's free, you don't obviously need a password.

I haven't found a free one yet.

I was due a new phone with Bell 2 years ago! In fact, myself, DH and DD all are waaay overdue...we've been waiting for the new network (GSM??) with Bell..can't recall what it's called..hmmmm....anyways, looking at the Iphone. Is it overkill for a Mum that really isn't much of a techie? I might like to use it to find restaurants...check things like that, text, calls that's about it?:confused3

Minnie56,

Check my post above. My wife loves hers now and wouldn't be able to live without it. Now shes a texting monster! LOL. All on pay as you go.

If you have an Apple Store near you, they hold lots of classes that teach you what you can do with their products.
They have loads of fun apps. So, wether it's worth it to you depends. Also the monthly plan isn't cheap. Plan on $50 - $60/mo. I'd really like one, but still thinking of the cost.

I started off with the iTouch. From there I eventually got the iPhone when it came out in Canada and shortly there after sold my iTouch. The phone did everything plus MORE.
If you think the phone capabilities of the iPhone might come in handy later, I wouldn't bother getting the iTouch. The phone will do the same thing plus more and both are quite expensive(tho the price of the iTouch came down a lot), so I would kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

A 500MB plan is fine for web browsing, unless you're using it 24 hours a day perhaps. You're only likely to go over that limit if you're watching a lot of videos, viewing a significant number of pictures, or downloading very large apps. For most people not watching lots of video, 500MB should be fine.

Okay--well we bought the I-Phone today for DD. She and I will play with it...If I find my 'way around it' I might get one too!!!!;)
