After several failed attempts, my family of four is finally heading to Disneyland in August. We are flying into Burbank, spending two nights at the Universal Hilton (we'll do a little Hollywood sightseeing and visit Universal Studios), and then heading to the Grand Californian for three nights.

My question is where to stay the final two nights of our trip. We'd like to see the beach, possibly visiting Newport Beach and Laguna Beach, do some shopping, and hang out by the pool. We'll fly home out of John Wayne/Orange County Airport so we'd like to stay somewhere reasonably close to that. What I'm finding is that the nicer beach resorts are extremely expensive -- I'm considering the Hyatt Huntington Beach but am now wondering if maybe we should just stay put at the Grand Californian and do some day trips from there. Since I'm not familiar with Anaheim, I don't know how cumbersome that would be. We will have a rental car.

What would you do? Hyatt Huntington Beach or an extra couple of nights at the Grand Californian? The price is about the same.

I'd stay at the Grand Californian and drive to the beach. Will take at most a 1/2 hour (non-rush hour) to get to Newport or Huntington. That way you can drive up and down the coast, if you want to. See some of the other things in the area. Grand Californian is so nice, it'll be better than any Hyatt.

Anaheim to Newport is just a freeway cruise down the 5 South to the 55 South, which takes you straight into Newport/Balboa. Huntington you can do by surface streets, down Beach Blvd is easiest. No huge hassle for either one.
