I am getting married in May of 2007. If we can afford it we were thinking about honeymooning in Italy as neither one of us has ever been there.

Does anyone have any recommendations for any hotels, tours, places to see or eat etc. that they wouldn't mind sharing or any good websites that you may have used yourself.

If you went there, did you book it all yourself or go through a travle agent? It's so hard to look at hotels online b/c they look so nice on there and I'm afraid when we get there it might be a different story.

We were thinking about going to Rome, Venice and Milan. We will be there for about 8 days.

Where in Italy? I went for the first time in July. We rented a villa in Tuscany. I'm about to interview someone but I will come back and tell you a few things and give you some websites if you are thinking of going there.

OP, I have a 20yo DS who travels extensively throughout Europe..he traveled over twice and is now attending the University of Glasgow in Scotland. He has toured Italy 2x (but being in the UK right now, he is not available for me to ask him any questions).

I have added a website that is Message Boards just like the DIS and you sign up and register just like here and then go to the EUROPE TRAVEL Forum and ask all the questions you want.

It is called BOOTS N'ALL!!! I post on there all the time as I am headed to London and Paris and everyone is just so incredibly helpful. GOOD LUCK!!!

When I visited Rome in March 2005, I stayed at the Hotel Capo D'Africa, located about two blocks from the Coliseum. The hotel is very luxurious with spacious, well-appointed rooms. There is a complimentary breakfast buffet each morning offering a variety of pastries, fruit, meats, and cheeses as well as coffee, tea, and juice. I highly recommend Hotel Capo D'Africa.

Check the new Adventures by Disney tour here. They have an Italy tour that someone was raving about.
Even if you don't want to take a group tour for your honeymoon, you can get an idea of what you could plan by using their itinerary. And you would know the hotels are first class.

I'm posting just more to remind myself. I went to Italy, I visited Rome, Florence and Venice. I used a great guide book and have some little tips of off the beaten track stuff. So when I get home from work I'll post the info for you.

I've been twice, both times in March and LOVED it. I've heard horror stories about what it's like during tourist season, but it was perfect when we were there. Sure, a little chilly at the time we chose to go. I did get a hint of what it can be like - we ended up being in Rome when the Pope died and people began filling rooms and camping out (SO glad we booked our room before)

We didn't stay in hotels too much though - luckily I had a cousin in the military stationed at a NATO base outside of Rome. So I can't tell you too much about finding rooms . . . although ours in Rome was decent. Not a five star, but for 120 euro a night we had two beds, a very clean room, private bathroom (always gotta make sure you have that when booking in Europe) and very friendly staff. Hotel Embassy I think? It was around the corner and down the block from the US Embassy just off of Via Veneto. Just like on these boards people say "a hotel is just a place to sleep" - VERY true in Italy. You don't want to be wasting time in your room when there are a couple thousand years worth of stuff to see.

The other great thing about the offseason - AMAZING airfare. We planned last minute and booked about a month out the first time and paid just under $600 round trip. The second time I watched fares for month and they bottomed out in January. We flew round-trip from Pittsburgh with one layover at JFK (best you can do from PIT, no direct flights) for $391! Total! With taxes and fees!
