It Was Exquisite. It Was Weird. It Was Free DDP with 2 Tween Boys- NEW Citrico's 10/4

Magic Kingdom, Columbia Harbor House and The Wave

Got up early to make sure we could get a few rides on Space Mountain before the line got too long! Have to say we LOVED the updated ride – still all the classic thrills with some fun new updates. If you heard some crazy person screaming: “NO! NOT THE RED TUNNEL! And "I WANT TO GET OFF!" And a high pitched: ”OMIGOD WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!,” that was my charming husband. Did I mention he teaches freshmen? Much as I try not to encourage his juvenile behavior, this kind of thing cracks me up to the point of tears. I’m not so sure our fellow riders found it amusing or if they thought he was an escapee from the funny farm.

ANYWAY, onto the FOOD!
With the recommendations of fellow DisBoarders firmly in mind, I steered us away from burgers and made sure we were right by Columbia Harbor House when the hungries hit. (I don’t have a PROBLEM with burgers, it’s just that I like something a little different when we’re on vacation.)

The lure of bite size bits of fried bird tempted the young ‘uns, and we zoomed into the cool interior. I think it was fairly early, so there were no lines or anything else bothersome. We got our food and headed upstairs to a quiet window seat. We chose fried chicken and fries for the boys, a Lighthouse sandwich for me, and a tuna sandwich for John. Which he picked mostly because I couldn’t decide which I wanted—(see, I put up with the antics, and he pretty much lets me have my way. :thumbsup2)

The boys’ enthusiasm for the chicken was overwhelming. Ben deemed the breading: “exquisite,” the chicken was moist and juicy, the fries hot and crisp.

Can you hear the choir of angels singing?

The Lighthouse sandwich was hummus on soft whole grain bread with lettuce and tomato. Now, I love hummus and can eat it by the bucket with a spoon, but this stuff was REALLY thin, so it kind of leaked out and got messy. I think hummus should have kind of a soft-cream-cheese texture, and this was more like runny yogurt. So I traded one half with DH’s tuna sandwich, which was awesome.

I pretty much love anything based in mayo, and this had a nice balance of tuna and mayo. We got those nice crispy Vicks chips on the side and polished off our whole plates. John and I both got the apple pie/tart thing for dessert.
ALSO nummy – not too sweet, great apple flavor.

IMG_2851.jpg
I don’t think the boys got dessert (???).

If they did, it was nothing special. So we loved CHH – highly recommend!

Toured a while longer, then had swim (boys) and a nap (me) prior to our ADR at The Wave.

Which is the sole reason I look cute in this photo rather than like a drowned sewer rat, since it POURED.

This was one meal I was personally really looking forward to, but even after checking out the menu ahead of time, I was a little apprehensive to see if the boys would like it – being all fresh and organic and natural isn’t always the right combination for tweens! But I figured they’d at least recognize the concept of pork tenderloin or steak, so we decided to go for it. I needn’t have worried – this was one of everyone’s favorite meals. We hopped on the monorail over to the Contemporary and checked in. The checker asked if we were on the dining plan, then gave us a big smile and told us we’d picked the best restaurant in Disney for our dining plan. High expectations! We got our buzzer and swam around in the blue fishbowl waiting room for a bit. I ordered a habanero lime margarita to pass the time.
IMG_2862.jpg

Notice my artful arrangement of candle and lime. Pretty, yes?

The drink was lovely, and not too sweet, but darn it, Disney drinkmakers, don’t tease me with the spicy promise of icy lime goodness with habanero and deliver…nothing. :confused3 No kick. Boo! We were seated after about 10 minutes, and got a look at the menu. The boys zoned in on the chili-rubbed steak, but were a little apprehensive on consuming potato in its natural state…aka, roasted rather than mashed or fried, so switched the roasted ones for a potato-onion gratin.

(“Cheesy potatoes. You will like them,” commanded Mom.)

John ordered the beef tenderloin, and I got the sustainable fish – sea bass, which now apparently comes from Alaska, not Chile.
The photo is the sea bass—the large pile of green stuff (watercress?) came off of TJs plate (GASP! There is GREEN STUFF TOUCHING MY MEAT!)– it was GREAT.

IMG_2863.jpg

The meal started with warm whole grain bread, which was soft, crusty, and studded with flax, sunflower seeds , grains and served with butter sprinkled with Hawaiian sea salt. Ummmm. I could have stuffed the entire loaf in my mouth, and had to sit on my hands to avoid another piece and save room for dinner. My sea bass was lightly seared and served on a bed of edamame and corn with a kind of light broth – so flavorful, I about licked it clean. Ben’s steak he deemed “exquisite” and he ate every bite, including the potato. He AND TJ both tried a bite of sea bass and liked it, so you know it had to be great! “It didn’t even need A-1”. John loved his tenderloin too, but he thought my sea bass hit it out of the park.

Desserts were good as well, I got the sorbets, all very nice, the lemon basil was VERY basil-y, which maybe wasn’t my favorite.
IMG_2869.jpg

Ben liked the raspberry cheesecake the best, and TJ slurped down the chocolate (which had salted caramel on it, and is all that is good and right with this world.)

IMG_2868.jpg

I was stuffed – but I think the boys could probably have downed a bigger portion of their steaks. Oh well…growing boys, you never know how much food they’ll need. So they had a post-dessert Churro back at MK for the fireworks.

You know what would improve these fireworks? A stick of FRIED DOUGH.

Up Next: Chicken nuggets are African food, right?

Great posts! Very funny too, and further evidence that it's a fallacy that girls are the ones who get moody (and gossipy, but that's another subject ;) ). :rotfl: We'll be trying the Wave on our next trip, so really enjoyed hearing some good things about it. BTW: I swear the photo of your drink at the Wave looks like an homage to the planet display in front of Mission Space. :thumbsup2

Great reviews so far! The Wave is also the meal I am looking most forward to on our trip next week....I am an organic, health food freak, so really excited about it!!!

I love it!!! I used to teach freshmen English so I can totally relate to your husband and his warped sense of what is funny. Thank God I have moved on to juniors. Your reviews are fabulous. I want to vacation with you guys. Your chicken nugget loving boys would fit so well with the "I don't like that' girls I have hahaha.

My boys are currently 7 and 5... so thanks for the sneak peak of 5 years into my future!

I believe my kids would consider chicken nuggets African, btw... yet to find out. AKL is one place we're yet to explore culinarily... (yeah, it's a word... now ;))

Keep those reviews comin'!

I love your reviews! You are very witty. You're my ADR twin - we had many of the same ADRs during our November trip.

Just chiming in to say that The Wave was our favorite meal this past July. Wonderful food and service. They were even sweet enough to bring out complimentary champagne for us in honor of our 20th!

I still think about that tenderloin...especially on nights when we have something at home like Hamburger Helper. Bleck.

My 10 year old daughter is a clone of your crabbypants - I don't know why she is such a sourpuss but I'm already bracing myself for the 'tude on our trip in two weeks - and picky? My goodness. SO picky  I also upgraded my 9 year old dd to the adult DDP for our trip, she can pack it away - don't know where she puts it - she's tall for her age but thin. Lucky girl.

Loving the reviews and the humor - keep it comin :woohoo:

Awesome reviews. Giving me a taste of what's to come when we take our 3 kids next summer - including the one who won't even eat ketchup! GASP!

Your reviews are great. I am totally cracking up:rotfl2:

Glad everyone is enjoying! It's really fun to "relive" things. SO glad I took notes, it's amazing what I've forgotten already!!

nice reviews and your family is adorable. As the mother of 1 tween boy I can so identify with the moodiness aspect of your older son, mine is 12 also. Cant wait for more.

Drizzly day, so we decided on a little Downtown Disney and DisneyQuest. Actually, I decided the boys could do DisneyQuest, and I would shop and do laundry. :laundy: Yes, I chose laundry over DQ, since DQ makes me want to rip off my own head and beat someone with it, while laundry is merely annoying. :thumbsup2:

So, we started the day at Earl of Sandwich and enjoyed everything – we split two sandwiches between the four of us so we could save a few CS credits for later. They were delicious, but it would have been nice to get a bag of chips alongside it. I think we had chocolate pudding for dessert.

IMG_2901.jpg

Mmmm, pudding. I headed back to CS for my peaceful laundry and reading activities, while the boys headed for electronic beeping Nirvana.

The plan was to meet the boys at the DD bus stop, but I had some bad bus karma going on, and ended up with the WORLDS MOST ANNOYING bus ride – took 90 minutes from CS to AKL!! :headache:

I finally caught up with them at Boma. What a gorgeous place!

IMG_2906.jpg

We were seated right away, and being STARVING, were glad it was a buffet. The “server” explained the buffet. I headed straight for the homemade hummus and soups. YUM. The best was the seafood stew – it had a rich coconut broth, mussels popping up out of it, and shrimp hidden on the bottom of the bucket (you have to dig to get all the good stuff.)

IMG_2909.jpg

The salads were also YUM – crisp and cold and flavorful. Especially curry pasta salad and nice greens with cilantro lime dressing. We also sampled fufu, calamari salad, and cabbage salad. Boys both tried the carving station meat, “with some weird sauce.” Ben also gave the couscous and boboti a chance, but didn’t care for either.

IMG_2908.jpg

And mostly, TJ had chicken nuggets. To be fair, he did think they were “the best chicken nuggets ever,” but still. Nuggets, with all that goodness to try. Sigh.

We all dove into the desserts, Ben’s favorite was the passion fruit panna cotta. They looked like little egg yolks, and he had about six of them. Nuts, I thought I had a photo. They looked so cute on the plate.

Other favorites were the caramel cheesecake and the zebra domes, which I let the kids try even though they contain alcohol. I did think it was nice that they put out a sign telling people they had alcohol. I don’t think it was very much, though. Kind of like the rest of the drinks I had this week. :rotfl:

I also had a pineapple mojito, it was OK. Honestly, if I am going to pay $7.50 for a drink, I want it to be great. It was fine, but it needed more fizz and ice. And ALCOHOL.

We left rather uncomfortably full, and didn’t even try everything. I think TJ ate 20 chicken nuggets, and since the rain had stopped, we bussed over the MK to catch the parade, and get TJ his post-dessert Dole Whip.

Up next: “Can I get soup for dessert?” Le Cellier

After sampling numerous offering at Boma during two dinners there I have to say that the boboti is the only dish I did not care for at all. I really enjoyed the variety of foods at Boma. Gee, our picky 7 year-old had a more varied plate there then TJ ;)

Im excited to eat at Boma. We cancelled a reservation at Ohana for Boma and I am so happy that we did. You rarely hear a bad word about this place.

We loved Boma, but I have to say that I thought the passion fruit panna cotta was really sour. Guess I like my desserts sweet!

Mmmmmm Boma's. This has been a favorite of the fam since our first trip in 2005 and we still love it!!
