I subbed to the thread because my DS is 10 (going to be 11 when we go) and wanted the pre-teen boy-parent perspective - but I love your reviews so much - I laughed, I cried, a good time is being had by all (and the pictures make me hungry) - thank you!!
Your review of The Wave makes me want to get my ADR back for our first day... I switched to Raglan Road at the BF's request but hmph, what does he know?
Also, love the picture of you and the boys on the monorail. Beautiful family!
I LOVE the Wave also, however, my DH was disappointed. When the largest piece of meat is only 5 oz, that's NOT going to cut it in his mind. So I'll have to wait till my next solo trip to enjoy it.
Day 5: Can I get soup for dessert? Yakitori House and Le Cellier
For lunch that day we went to Yakitori House. It was OK. I know the Japanese generally really value presentation, but our plates were NOT pretty.
I believe the stuff that looks like shredded innards is the beef sukayaki. Both boys had this, and after an initial bout of attitude...
(Can you just see the wheels turning...trying to find something to hate...)
Hunger WINS!
Ben had no complaints. He's even getting good with the chopsticks, after I told him the chicks dig boys who can use chopsticks.
I had a spicy tuna roll
Again, OK - could have had more spice. We ended the meal with a few slices of the chocolate ginger cake made the meal though -- light and delicious! So the meal was fine, but I was kind of bummed we didnt do Tangierine Café, instead!
So for dinner, we have wanted to go to LeCellier since being unable to get ADRs on our last trips (I swear, I was on a mission, since everyone wanted to eat there SO BAD!) We got 7pm ADRs by booking the full 6 months in advance. I didnt even have airfare yet, but I figured this meant we were committed!
I was actually kind of nervous about it, since we had such high expectations. We arrived on time, and WOW, what a gorgeous garden. But it looked like wed have a little bit of a wait, so I sent DH to fetch me a Grand Marnier Grey Goose slush in France. Good boy! It took forever, but fortunately he got back in time for our reservation to be called, less only a few drops (or sips!) Now THIS was a nice drink! Cool, sweet and refreshing, with a nice bite of vodka and the smoothness of Grand Marnier. I could have had a larger portion, since it was so hot, but it kept me happy in our pretty garden. Finally got seated...
WHERE'S THE MEAT???
TJ had a raspberry smoothie which was delicious, tasted just like pureed fresh raspberries.
We started with a bowl of cheddar cheese soup to share, and fought mightily over the last drops. The boys found every bite amazing, and badgered us mercilessly to order another bowl. We stood strong against the promise of copious portions of grilled meat to come.
I ordered the mushroom filet, the boys had New York Strip, and John had the Kansas City strip. TJ substituted mashed potatoes for what they originally threatened to serve him.
My filet did not disappoint.
I dont eat tons of steak, but I am glad I made an exception. It was perfectly cooked, seared outside, and the mushroom risotto was truly wow. I have heard some people say it was too salty, and I generally am pretty sensitive to too much salt, but in this case, I think the saltiness of the risotto worked with the fat in the steak. Super yum.
The boys ate every bit of their steaks (NY Strip)
but I think John was a little disappointed in his selection --- he said his WAS too salty, and said he wished hed ordered what I had.
I let him have a SMALL bite, since he did hike through 100 percent humidity to fetch me a drink.
For dessert, I had the crème brulee, which I was pretty meh over. The crust was nice, but the crème wasnt anything too wow.
The boys had the chocolate moose, which was cute, but they were full, so they didn't even dismember it.
and I dont remember Johns dessert I think we were in a steak coma. The boys did lobby for another bowl of soup for dessert, but no dice!
Service and atmosphere were very nice, and we were all SO glad we finally got in. I think this was the boys favorite restaurant meal all week (I think the Wave won for me). We walked out just to the finale of Illuminations wed hoped wed finish in time to get the whole show, but the finale was a nice way to wrap up a lovely meal.
And the quote of the day: Mom, its going to be kind of hard to get used to YOUR cooking after this trip. TJ
Up next: Day 6, In which we abandon the children and go to Citricos
Great reviews! I think we will have a whole crew of tweens named Captain Buzzkill of the SS Crabbypants. Sounds like my very own DS12 (almost 13). I practically beg him to look happy just so innocent passersby dont think I'm holding him against his will or something!
I'm so glad that I came back to check out dining reviews...your review rocks!
I have DDs 10 and 5, and they are just as frustrating with food (no rhyme or reason) as your boys are. (I am amused at your frustration...is that wrong??? Or just showing that misery does love company?)
I am very interested in your Citricos -kids review...I have had that in mind for our next trip!
Totally loving your review. You are so right that it is harder than it looks. I wanted so badly to do a trip report after our trip in 2008 had the restaurants laid out with everyone's name so I could quickly write down what they had and report on it later.
It worked perfectly the first day and the nine days after that went un-recorded.
Thank you for your efforts! I know about grumpy tweens have a 12 going to be 13 next month DD. And to add to my joy a not too excited about having a sister at all 18 year old DD.
My DH is good like yours too and would run out for a Grey Goose Slushie for me if it was needed
You are so funny!!! I'll tell my 8-yo DS that chicks dig dudes who use chopsticks. It may backfire on me, though. He might refuse to ever use chopsticks again to avoid cooties.
Great reviews! I was really humored by that "wheels turning" pic of your son at Yakitori House trying to find something to hate about his dish. My DS-8 would totally do the same thing!
Your Le Cellier review (and pics) really have me looking forward to our ADR in November! There is a mushroom filet with my name on it!
