not the keypad but the actual door opener that you usually keep in your car?

Thanks.

We had a similar issue when we bought this house. It came with two openers, only one worked. We tried and tried to re-program the second one, no luck. Looked online for codes, nothing worked.

We bought one of those "universal remotes". What a joke.

Here is what you do.

Look on the opener itself, take down the model number, manufacturer, and serial number (they are all on the opener, usually on the back) and call the company. They will send you one for your opener. It's about $50, but it is the only thing that works.

We had one from Sears that said it couldn't be redone but when I found the original manual and set it up as if for the first time it did actually reprogram itself.

I say try to find the original manual, even if it's online, and give it a go.

My opener on the ceiling of the garage has a series of switches inside. You set those to your preferred numbers, then set the switches inside the remotes to match. Our door was set with the same code as the neighbor's door, so we changed ours. You can change it whenever you want to by resetting the switches. I even bought an extra remote for the car that we kept outside and set it also.

That had to be fun. Back in the 50's when all of this was new it got to be interesting in our area. I used to live about 10 blocks from Midway airport in chicago. People put in garage door openers and watched the doors go up and down. It turned out that when pilots keyed the mikes the doors would open and close. After awhile they were able to solve it.

Open the back of the main door opener, hanging from the rafters of your garage. You will see a series of tabs that can be set either up or down. Set each of those tabs to the up or down position...for example I have 6 tabs and I would set #1 up #2 down #3 up #4 down...etc.

Then open the back of your remote that you have in your car. Set those same tabs exactly like you just set the door opener.

You have just reprogramed your door opener.

If you have that kind of opener.

Our opener can be reprogrammed much like a universal remote for a TV. You press the buttons and hold them for a while and it "talks" to the main unit. It was pretty easy actually. We replaced the touch pad opener and it was the same thing, punch some keys in a certain order and it automatically reprograms.

Some are easier than others. On our newer model we have to push and hold a button on the unit in the garage, then do a series of things with the handheld remote to set everything.

I'd find out what brand you have and look it up online.

I don't think any of the newer ones use the dip switches. I think they are all programed by pressing the button on the back of the opener and then holding the button down on the remote.
