It is harder to rent points than I thought!

We had a 2 BR at VWL reserved for July 3-8. Our trip had to be postponed.

I thought that ressie would be snatched up in a hurry for $10 a point, but it didn't.

So . . .

I plan to cancel the ressie and rent out the points (200) instead. But so far, I am getting no takers on the points, either???

Any advice?

If you can't rent them out, maybe you can bank those points as you are more than 30 days from your reservation in July. Bank those points and try to rent them or transfer them.

I don't know much about banking points, but if you can, do that instead and post a thread to rent the points or transfer to another dvc member.

I have rented my points out several times but never on this board. It seems like it would be a little more difficult to do bc some of the people on the board are on a lot or have a huge # of points to rent so they get to the renters first so to speak. I have several people that rent from me every other year or so and also give me word of mouth referals so that is how I do it. Ebay is an option as well but with the fees etc. that makes it difficult.

First of all ... I'm sorry you couldn't use your points .

Secondly, it's only been 2 weeks and you had some nibbles. What did you expect? An instant sale? Also, you were originally trying to sell an existing reservation which is always harder than just points. Give it time!

Third, you need to make your "ad" a bit nicer. Yes, you have certain terms of sale (50% down, $10 per point firm), but there is no reason to put them in your post. Stick to the minimum: resort, number of points, cost per point, use year and put that all in your Subject. Anything else may scare a buyer away and you can always tell them your terms of sale once you have a relationship with them .

Fourth, think about renting less than the 200 points. Maybe a couple of studios to a couple of different people? I know that you need to get rid of 200 points, but you may not have a buyer for all 200 in your preferred timeframe.

Fifth, contact people who are looking for points. Call MS for them and let them know if their request is available. Make the contact and create the relationship. The buyer will thank you and you will get the sale.

Good luck! You have a long time to sell your points. I think you'll be fine .

Honestly, you have a lot of time to rent your points. I have never had a problem renting mine and the last couple times I contacted the buyer who asked for points. You just need to keep your eye on the rental board and email right away. Tell them that you have the points they need and that you are/will check will MS ASAP for their dates.

I tried the reservation strategy as well but it didn't work as well as when I cancelled the res. and rented 190 points at $10.00 a point to another DVC member. This made it very easy because it was just a simple transfer of points from one account to another.

Give it a month or two. Rent your points, not a reservation. It's like fishing. With a little patience, you will get the big bite.

I found that when I posted that I had points for rent, I didn't get any takers except for people who were looking for distress points.

But I watched the posts and it seemed a lot of people posted that they needed points . I emailed them and said I had points and we were able to work something out right away. In fact, I just transferred some points today to another DVC member AND she was (in the same phone call) able to get the last night of a reservation for the trip she had planned!

There are lots of savvy people who realize that they can come here and find rental points for way cheaper than Disney direct or buying into DVC (with a big chunk of moolah. So just keep watching for people to post that they need points and then email them immediately. Good luck!

I agree that points rent out easier than a reservation. Another strategy is to go for slightly under $10. $9.50 a point seems like a bargain to someone, yet when you come down to it you are only *losing* $100 on your 200 points. To me, that $100 is well worth having the points rented out quickly and not having to stress about how soon they need to be gone.

If it makes you feel any better, one day in April I had the urge to see the mouse, and within the hour I had posted that I was looking to rent points, found someone to rent me the points, had a reservation booked for me, and emailed the confirmation. I agree wtih Robin's advice. Plus, it may also be a factor that there is less short term booking happening for summer months (ie summer travellers usually plan ahead more than off season travellers, many of whom book short term)

In fact, I am seriously considering doing another last minute point rental for a short upcoming trip!

I like to rent studios.

however everyone is different.

I think I should start posting on the resort boards - that always get most posters and looker on the DVC rental/trade board.

but 200 points would be $2,000 that is alot of money for a new poster to give to a stranger.

One more thing - add to your post that unless you get someone in 10 days or so you will cancel this reservation. Someone who is looking will get in contact with you if they know they have a deadline.

I am the person who had ColoradoBelle transfer points into my account. It was a seemless easy transaction. I used paypal to pay her and the next day on a conference call we took care of it all. It was great.

I can see where transfers are easier to sell, AND much less work!!!

Unfortunately, these are borrowed points that cannot be transferred.

That's great! You may want to dig around on the rental board for a contract to send to your buyer which includes your terms of sale, payment policies, cancellation policies, etc. I like to be in agreement on these things with the buyer before I cash their check. You will need the names and ages of all the people in the room to make the reservation. Plus, you should ask them if they have any special requests to put on the reservation. It's best to get all that done at once so you don't have to call MS again and again.
