Called my satellite radio provider and told them I did not want to pay $162.00 for next year. Got it down to 90.

Just called my TV satellite/cable provider and got a "loyal customer Discount" been with them 7 years now and got 10.00 off for a year and showtime for 2 months.

Was this Sirius or XM? Did you tell them you would cancel if they didn't have a better rate or you just asked for a discount? That's a great deal for the year!

They are the some company, sort of. I always mention cancel whenever I make a call!! Hint hint hint. My friend just called the other one and got a discount too. So it would probably work with either or any company actually. But to be honest I would have canceled I have a 15 min drive to work I really don't need it.

I called to cancel XM radio and they gave me 6 months free.

SIRIUS has an awsome retention department, they just sent me an FM adapter and install card because I was not wanting to keep them, they actually are told they have to make a couple offers to keep you as a customer.

DirecTV is another good one.

This will shock others, I called Capital One, who increased my interest to 22% after the credit crunch came down - so I told them I was closing my account moving my balance to my 8.9% interest card from my credit union. I got to the senior account manager, 3 people up from the guy who answered the call. He said he understood and wanted to keep my buisness, he offered me a refund of $39 for my annual fee and a $200 credit on my account. I have NEVER missed a payment or been late, I think that helped, but I kept the card. Now this is the oldest card I have, so I'll always keep it, and I've ALWAYS gotten a credit for the $39 fee each year, so I don't worry about it.

I totally agree! My current rate with Sirius is $20 for five months. I just have to remember to call again to "cancel" or else they'll try to charge $24/month.

I renegotiated with DirecTv in May, got $10 off/month for a year, Showtime and Starz for 6 months free.

Don't take the retentions department personally. If you're not getting a good deal, try calling again later. Some people are totally willing to help negotiate to keep you as a customer.

It works with some companies but every time we try this with Comcast it doesn't...I hate that. :(
We paid a 1 time fee to Sirius and I have lifetime Sirius in my minivan, it is transferrable up to 3 times so I can trade it to another device if I wanted to. :)

Yeah, cable TV just doesn't seem to care if you leave! So, we left! We hated cable anyway.

We have gone back to Directv.

I called discover card to see if there were any offers and they gave me 1.9% apr for 6 months.

I dont carry a balance but its nice to know its there just in case.

I have a few days off, maybe I'll add calling our serivce companies for discounts to my to do list.

$77 for satellite radio? I'd love that

I got three free HD PVR Rentals from our Cable Company (Rogers) when i called them up and suggested moving to their competition. (they normally charge $25 per month plus taxes for the PVRs)

We also got 6 months unlimited voice and data on a cell phone plan thrown into the deal.

Now if only i can get them to drop my internet caps ;)

Also with XM Radio i got a full year for $77.00 it comes up in April. Gonna call and cancel again.

We are talking about doing this, the only thing is we need high speed internet (yes, need lol) and the only high speed internet at our house is Comcast....and yes I've checked EVERYwhere.....

We have DirecTV but are thinking of switching to Dish...guess I can call to let them know our thoughts and see what they offer. Also need to call Sirius aswe have been charged for a radio we don't use and I need to stop paying for my sister's radio that was a Christmas gift 2 years ago!

My XM contract was up last month and our email address had changed, so I didn't renew in time and lost service. I was dilly-dallying about calling for it because I didn't want to pay the $150+/year fee. I do like the service, but I'd rather spend the money on other things.

DH lost patience on Sunday, so he renewed it over the weekend, but the radio still wasn't working today.

Instead of calling for service, I called to cancel. The guy was a little confused since it showed a on-file renewal at $156/year, so we played "Let's make a deal" and got it down to half-price: $64 for one year. Now I can enjoy the Comedy Channel and the decades programming with peace of mind.

Thanks for the inspiration, bakalober!

Yep, I waited until my Sirius trial had been over for a few weeks, then caleld and got a year for $70. I really love satellite radio--I can't go back to regular. But shhh, don't tell them that! :lmao:

Exactly!:thumbsup2

Ever since we've had Sirius/XM radio, I have told them I wanted to cancel at the end of our contract and all but once they came back with a really low rate, like 6 months for $30...last time they did not do this so I outright cancelled. Within 6 weeks, we got an offer in the mail to come back for the same offer as what I was getting before ($30 for 6 months). We love Sirius/XM, especially for long trips, but we refuse to pay $10-$15 a month for it.

I do this every single spring when I reconnect with Time Warner for my cable and internet service at the lake.. Of course they always quote some ridiculous price and insist they can't go lower; aren't running any specials; etc. - and I just keep telling them I won't pay more than "$$", so they put me on hold, come back, and have miraculously found some sort of special that they had previously "overlooked"..

I would never pay the initial price they quote me.. I'd go without first.. It's not worth the money they want..

So you're right.. It's definitely worth it to make a call.. Glad you got something you're happier with..
:)
