April/May trip report for the "Doodah" family (me-40; DW-35; DD8; DS5)
It all started with a breakfast -a festival of carbohydrates and cholesterol that any lumberjack would be proud of. It was the 3rd week of April; DW and I had been feeling the stress of an impending summertime move to a new city for new jobs. We looked at one another across the table at Denny's and wished there was some pressure release coming up soon. I forget who mentioned it first, and it hardly matters which one of us it was, but the next thing we knew we were talking about a WDW trip.
When could we do it? What do our calendars look like? Could we come up with a deal? All these questions and more swirled through our carbed up minds as we rushed back to the office and checke dour calendars. It looked as though the best time would be.... THE VERY NEXT WEEK. I checked prices on line and then called the AAA TA for a quote. What do you know... they saved us $170 over the best deal I could put together online!
We decided we would leave home Thursday 4/28 at noon, and return on Tuesday 5/3. We also thought we would keep this a surprise for the kids. That was the hardest thing I've done lately!
On departure day we take DD to school and told her DW would be picking her up after a half day for an appointment at the eye doctor. When we sat her and DS down to tell them what was really going on they hardly believed us. After a couple of cautious questions there was much yelling and screaming -maybe a tear or two thrown in for good measure. The car was packed, so all we had to do was jump in and go. By 9:30 we wewre at the Pop Century.
We stayed in the '70's building that had the giant Mickey phone in front. The room (6138) was probably as far away from the main building as one could get in that building -right next to the lake. Even at that, we felt like it was a close walk to the main building and main pool. The room was neat and clean (unlike some other value resorts we have stayed at recently). I liked the decor better than the AS resorts. The colors were a bit more understated. I liked the Disney-themed collage on the wall next to one of the beds.
We all got settled into bed quickly and awaited a wake up call from Mickey. Up next... Magic Kingdom.
