Issue with Discover Card

so I made a large purchase on my Discover Card and instantly sent a check to pay the card off. I went to check my bank balance today and noticed I had a VERY LOW balance. In looking at my account I saw that Discover deducted twice the amount I sent. In essence, they deducted the check I sent twice! It was rather large check (several thousand dollars). They said they will need to investigate and it will take 15 days!!! in the meantime I have an automatic withdraw for my taxes coming up next week and the money won't be there. I called Discover back to speak w/ someone else and they said it is a "known issue and they are working on it".

If you have Discover Card you may want to take a look to see if you were effected.

I'm hoping not to bounce any checks because of this!!! Also, really sweating this out not knowing if they will fix it before taxes are withdrawn!!!

Good to know...thanks for the heads up. I've used it pretty heavily lately but luckily have already took care of taxes.

Make sure to notify your bank as well. They may be able to do something on their end especially since Discover has admitted this was an error.

I'm surprised your bank even allowed that - my bank (Credit union) would call me immediately to verify if it were in fact a mistake. I don't send checks for any payments but any bounced checks would be at the fault of Discover. And they will pay for it. I wouldn't worry.

When we set up our mortgage(not Discover mortgage but another company), we were told that they would send us a confirmation that our mortgage payment would be direct deposit - well here we are 5 days before our payment is due and no confirmation. So we sent in the payment. Sure enough we got dinged for the direct deposit (they sent the letter to the address we were living at when we bought our home - not sure why they wouldn't send it to the home the mortgage was for? Any way, it didn't get forwarded so we never got it). Well, 2 mortgage payments and $6,400 later we had multiple insufficient funds fees. But after taking it up with the mortgage company, they paid us for our fees and sent back $3,200. So they fixed it.

I really hope this all gets fixed for you - Discover seems like a great company so I think it will all work out.

thank you piccolopat! My first step was to call the bank b/c I thought the error was on the bank's side but they said it was something Discover would have to fix :(

Thanks for the heads up! That is the ONLY credit card that my parents have so I called them and they are calling the bank to check on theirs

:)
