I'm a hospice nurse and I have this 94 yr old gentleman. he and his wife are delightful, we talk forever when I visit. They knew I was taking Claire to Disney. They asked me how to spell her name. I thought this was strange. I came home and there was a letter from them saying they wanted to pay for her Disney ticket and they knew I wouldn't have accepted it. Inside was $50. I can't accept it but I know they would be hurt so I will give it to the son, who happens to be my former teacher and he can get it back to them without letting on it's from me. I just thought this was the sweetest thing, such a kind old couple.

How sweet!!! My father would likely have done the same - he was a tempermental old coot, but he loved kids (in a good way, not a perv way LOL). Any kid that came within 10 feet of him was likely to walk away with a candy bar! He grew up during the depression, and candy bars were a real big treat to them back then, so that's what he loved to pass onto kids today - they may not have gotten the full significance of it, but I don't know any kid that went away without a smile on their face either!

And god bless you for being a hospice nurse - when my father was ill, they were what helped us keep him home where he wanted to die. We hired other help as well, but without the hospice nurses none of it would have been possible. They were also the sane voice of reason when some wanted to take extreme measures to get just a few more days of (miserable) life for him (which he didn't want).

Does your job have a rule against accepting a gift from a patient? If not, and if you know they are not destitute, I would accept the gift. I'm sure it makes them happy to do something nice for you as a thank you for all that you do for them. :flower3:

I agree. I think it would be wonderful for your daughter to use the money for something special and you take her picture with it, then give them a copy when you get home, along with a hand-written thank-you note from your daughter.
