Island Tower at Polynesian Villas & Bungalows

Central Shops at WDW has some pretty high-end CNC machines, pretty sure they would have no problems manufacturing any of the needed parts. Got to tour both Central Shops and the Transportation Depot backstage earlier this month as part of an Adventures by Disney trip, and my impression was that they are well-equipped to keep the monorails running for the foreseeable future. The CMs in the Depot are really knowledgeable, and were very keen to share info about their jobs.
Side tangent since apparently we have nothing new to discuss about the tower - can you tell me more about this Adventures by Disney trip? That backstage tour sounds so cool!

When California Adventure opened, it was criticized for not having enough rides. I was mid 20s with an AP when it opened and loved that park. My friends and I could walk around with a BEER and ride an awesome coaster upside down. That sky school is a riot.
Pour one out for Seasons of the Vine and Mullholland Madness.

Also @intamin rumors are that you will like the new parade coming to WDW (unless you especially like the PTN theme, which is supposedly being cut), I personally remain an electrical parade purist.

I'm open to a new parade. Don't get me wrong like I said I love MSEP, Baroque Hoedown, all of it. But I also like seeing what Disney can do with more recent technology and the parks need something to bring energy to them at night. Speaking of which I wish AK would stay open later than freaking 6 PM again so I can see Pandora after the sun has gone down without needing to attend a Moonlight Magic but I digress

Nostalgia will be the death of us. Every time something changes at a Disney theme park or resort, it's taken as a personal affront. "When my daughter was 4 she met (character) in front of ____ and now it's gone forever. So sad I'll never get to see that again."

Don't get me wrong, I have a ton of those memories too. 22 years ago we had an absolutely amazing time at the Tapestry of Dreams parade with our 2 yo son, which we still joke about today now that he's 24. But that's the thing...I'll always have those memories. Disney didn't steal my memories. I don't need to re-live it and nobody wants Disney to run the same parade for over 25 years.

That's not to say there aren't things worth complaining about. But it gets lost in the noise of splitting hairs over paint colors on hotel room walls or the origins of a new light fixture. Or ranting about a new hotel 3 years before it's set to open. (Seriously, who has the energy to get upset about something literally years before the finished product is even visible???)

I say this as someone who's closer to the end of his journey than the beginning: Disney isn't just building things for us anymore. There are whole new generations coming, with different tastes and different expectations. Disney doesn't feel obligated to leave the Poly looking like a relic of the 1970s or 1980s. Nor should they. Time marches on.

When it comes to subjective things like colors, designs and decor, at least 2 things are true:
1) Even if I don't like it, someone else probably does
2) Eventually, it's gonna change again anyway
YES. You said it perfectly. I understand, to a point, that when something that was your truest happy place during formative years of your life starts to feel less magical because XYZ reasons, you’d be upset. It feels like the memories of your childhood are being desecrated by the evil and greedy corporate execs who know nothing about running an entertainment business except to make as much Wall Street profit as possible, that you can’t help but start hating everything that comes out this company. But the thing is, nothing they do can ever compete with your childhood/past memories. Our memories are wrapped in cotton candy and pure serotonin and frankly, we were much easier to be entertained 20 years ago then we are now, so of course everything back then felt incredible and inspiring and innovative. I was endlessly happy with some mud, leaves and sticks as a kid and now I need 4 different forms of mental stimulation at the same to get the job done lol.

And like you said, there’s also the issue of what makes one group really happy will piss off another, and so who do you try to please? I’m not saying the direction of the company is by any means positive or currently working well, I’m just saying that it’s easy to look back and say wow those were the golden years and everything is ruined now. Somethings probably are, but I’d sure bet many, many things are probably much better.

What’s worse, for me anyway, as a “newer” Disney adult is that I only know the magic of current-ish day Disney and I love it (clearly lol). I didn’t get to experience the wondrous magic that was the Disney company through the eyes of people much older then me, or those who have been lucky enough to know and love these parks and this company for all these years. But I feel like if I like anything Disney has done recently (the Poly tower, Tiana’s, Country Bears-still love and miss the old version but the new one seems fun!), I’m a shill for the company…not that I make any money off of anything, but you know what I’m trying to saying. I want to see new things and new tech and new shows and new rides, even if that means sometimes sacrificing something I still love to make room.

If I’m lucky enough to keep going to these parks for years and years until I finally start to get sick of it or tired of the changes (of course, that’ll never happen 😉), I hope I have the grace to not complain about it all over every social media platform and let the newer generations experience the magic that is changing for them.

Sadly a whole industry has sprung up on Youtube for WDW hate because that's what gets the views, aka $$. Everything is an "abomination" or a "travesty" or a "disaster". Such drama and cynicism over a theme park 🙄 So every little perceived flaw is amplified.

When something is announced it's literally a race to get "content" out bashing it. Not there aren't legit complaints, but when the person's whole personality is based around bashing something, it's obvious what their motivation is. Ah well, those are the times we live in I guess. I just hope the negativity won't keep people from enjoying the magic of the parks, of which there's still a lot IMO.

It was the jet trip. ;-) Not offered next year, AFAIK.

Exactly! Every time something new comes to WDW the phrase "it doesn't feel/seem Disney to me" will inevitably be uttered. You know why it doesn't feel Disney? Because it didn't previously exist at Disney, that's why.

I think, as someone who was lucky enough to go a few times as a kid, I miss the more interactive elements of the parks--literally the parts you didn't have to stand in line for. I remember playing Disney Dance Dance Revolution inside Magic Kingdom when they still had arcades. Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground, Wonders of Life pavilion and The Dig Site were a few of my fondest memories because I was allowed to run around and yell and interact with things. Which was a big deal as a kid, when you're frequently told to sit still and not touch anything.

They used to build a lot of stuff at "kid height," like the Cinderella fountain optical illusion, the fiber optic lights in the EPCOT paving stones, and even the way they re-paved the ground in New Fantasyland (jewels by 7DMT, Maximus's horseshoes by Tangled bathrooms, etc.).

Maybe it's in my head, but it just feels like the last 8 years of Disney has been about cutting corners. Every time they build a new land, it's two rides and a restaurant, nowhere to sit, no shade. It feels very two-dimensional. And it's tough because I do love many of the newer rides but like...I love Rise of the Resistance, but hate how empty Batuu feels. I like Slinky Dog Dash but hate how much of a parking lot Toy Story Land feels like . I was always jealous that China got TRON, and was THRILLED when they announced it was coming to MK . I really hoped that they'd try to "plus" up the ride when it came to one of their flagship US parks, since the main drawback was clearly how short the ride was. Nope, giving it extra pixie dust costs money. They didn't even bother to re-record the audio track for Remy.

Disney is still fun, has great rides and entertainment! It just seems like Imagineers are much more budget-restricted than they were in the past.

Bringing it around...that's why the Poly tower makes me sad. They had the opportunity to really go in on the 70s tiki vibe, heck even build a bigger venue for Trader Sams...and from renderings it just looks like a very fancy hotel you'd find in Miami. It's pretty. It's nice. It just doesn't feel like "Disney's Polynesian Resort" to me.

Porte cochere is making progress.

Also, one of the image looks like they are starting the metal support/trellis type work on the other side. As someone suggested, these metal structures on the side may be for some type of artwork.

Murals with Polynesian floral/fauna for lots of color or Maui on one side and Moana on the other would make kids ohh and ahh as they ride past the Island Tower.

I wonder about this very thing too. However, I think it is possible that Disney doesn’t want to expand Trader Sam’s. Ever. As long as it is small it is hard to get in, it is much more exclusive. For that reason people keep trying to go. If it was expanded and became something most could easily do it might just become another “ho-hum” Disney vacation stop and no longer a must-do.
Neither my DH or I are drinkers - but you can bet we stood in line once and bought drinks in expensive souvenir mugs. I am not sure we would have if it wasn’t as exclusive as it is right now.

There’s legitimate criticism with what you’re saying and I truly can’t argue with that. Disney likely has been cutting corners for a while now and maybe the parks are not as interactive as it once was but seeing it from fresh eyes, it doesn’t feel flat or 2D to me, at all. They’re doing what companies do best which is what makes them most profit and brings new people and generations in. And kids today don’t play outside as much and so, sadly, those interactive playgrounds and bits become underused spaces. I think kids today love the parks just as much as you did when you were younger but for different reasons and they’ll grow up with these parks in their nostalgic memories and no doubt be upset with the changes that occur in 20 years. The circle of life (Disney), and all.

I sympathize and I wouldn’t have minded if they went this direction but I don’t fully agree here (not about Trader Sam’s, that would have been great, though @KimMcGowan makes a good point. Hopefully they’ll have some good dining options regardless). I don’t think they need to build the same style they did 50 years ago for it to still be worthy of being considered a Disney resort. Like others have said, the tiki culture lives on in one half of the resort so they already went all in on that theme. This addition, with it’s more eco-friendly, subtler aesthetic appeals to families who like the luxury and modernity of those hotels in Miami you mention 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s just the change of times, I’m sure it’ll come back to the overly themed style soon enough. I see it as a new option and style of rooms to stay instead of an echo of existing rooms. And so we get the best of both worlds that will appeal to a greater population. When I’m feeling nostalgic, I’ll book the original rooms and when I want something cleaner and lighter, I’ll book the tower.

Tell me more about this rumored new night parade...👀
Are we allow to link to “rival” message boards here? There is a board where Len Testa is active and also has a lot of purported insiders who leak— several people there feel very confident WDW is going to answer the launch of Epic Universe with a new light parade, seemingly at MK—but I only recently discovered the board and cannot in anyway vouch for the credibility of the rumor.

You can try and post the link. If the link shows as ****** then we can’t discuss it. If the link shows in full without ***** then no problem.

I don't agree with this. One of my kids favourite parts of the park is the playground at AK, and they're not the only ones, because there are always a bunch of kids there. I wish every park had an area like that, for unstructured play, where kids can just be free to play. I also really hope they don't get rid of it when they redo that part of the park.

Eh. I don't agree with this. The space is small so only because of space constraints. Alcoholic drinks have some of the highest profit margins of anything you can serve in a restaurant. Besides maybe limited edition cups. I do agree that many folks who are Disney fans like to feel like they're getting an exclusive or special experience. But Disney offer lots of other ways to get that outside of a themed bar

It's more of a cost thing. Building a new, larger Trader Sam's would be expensive because of how interactive the whole place is. Plus They'd have to figure out whether or not to keep the old one.

I agree, but truthfully I’ve only ever seen a few kids running around in the dig site, and many times I’ve seen no one, but maybe I’ve visited at the wrong times. Honestly, I love the dig site, I wish I could play in it lol (and splash pads, I’d love one of those for adults) but we always skip it because it’s too hot or raining or we have other places to be. It looks great and adds really great kinetic energy to the area but the weather in Florida is rough like 8-9 months of the year- what they should do is create more child friendly spaces like the indoor playground in Fantasyland. I don’t have kids but I’ve taken my nieces and nephews there and it’s always been full of kids and parents, cooling off and burning energy. My point is not that they shouldn’t exist, I agree with you, there should be more of them, but that doesn’t negate the fact that the many of these places seem underused (again, maybe I’ve visited at the wrong times 🤷🏼‍♀️)

ETA: sorry for the tangent, forgot what thread we were in for a bit lol, I’ll leave my thoughts on this here!

Yeah Trader Sam's could be twice the size and never have an empty seat IMO.

They demo'd the one at HS back when it was always packed. It was my kids' favorite part of that park, and then it was gone. (when they got rid of half the park to build starwars)

I suspect it sort of got lost in time, but they got rid of what was sort of the play area in MK and replaced it with the inside playground at Dumbo. Because they don't really advertise it, I don't think many families of littles think of it as a play area or realize how great it is. When the new Dumbo opened we would go spend an hour or two in there every afternoon, relaxing while the kids got to play in the A/C.
EPCOT still has the play area in the exit area of Mission Space - another that I don't think people with littler kids realize is there or it would be crazy packed.
