My husband just finishing making bunk beds for our boys. He used the Pottery Barn kids blue bunk beds as his model - they look awesome, and cost 1/3 of what PB would have. He also fixes just about anything that breaks in the house, builds things I'd like to have (medicine cabinet, bookcase, etc) - it has saved us so much money over the years! I really appreciate having a husband who is handy, just wanted to hear from anyone else who has it like that too. Or not! :goodvibes

Congratulations! My husband's carpentry skills stop well before cabinet-making, although he has put a lot of things together. He can make repairs. He does painting, spackling, plumbing, and electrical work at home, maintaining the house and yard, and maintains the vehicles. I shudder to think how much we would have spent over the years if we had had to hire someone to do all of that.

Yes...and he cooks, too. I love that my husband can fix things around the house and the car. He's saved us soooo much $$!! He ordered online and installed brakes for both our vehicles. 2 nights ago I noticed water dripping out of the office light switch plate and he knew it was the a/c drain pipes that were clogged up. Flushed them with clorox...blew the junk through and now all is fine.

Grills and cooks! I am so lucky. I worry about my son, though...he knows nothing and I fear it's too late to pass the torch. He's off to college in the fall.

Maybe the 13 year old daughter can pick up some handy skills...

Isn't it wonderful to have a handy husband?

Mine is very handy, does all the work around the house - we've never had to hire for repairs or updates. Before we sold our last home he did a kitchen remodel, fixed the chimney, built new rails for the deck...all on his own. Saved lots of $$$!

He works long hours and has a long commute, so sometimes it takes him a little longer to get a project started (or finished) but thankfully our home is only a few years old, so there is not much to do. :goodvibes I am very lucky!

Yes, very, and I'm eternally grateful. We've done a couple of additions on the house, built a 2 car, 2 story garage from the ground up, etc. He used to work on all our cars, but with them being so computerized now, not so much anymore.

I have never been handy, but lucky for me DH is. When he was growing up his parents had rental properties. So when all the other boys were out playing ball, DH was mending screens, unplugging toilets, tapping down shingles, and setting bricks. At the time he thought he was very put upon and surely his dad did not love him. :goodvibes But it has really paid off for us! THere's almost nothing he can't fix. DH does all the electrical work, plumbing, carpet cleaning, and wall repairs. His skills even include RV repairs--just this weekend he and I were under the sink in the camper trying to fix a leak. Me? :hippie: I have no idea was was wrong, but he:wizard: went right to work and repaired it--no leak now! Then he climbed up on top of the camper and repaired the awning that had ripped.

:worship: Im convinced my DH could fix just about anything, given enough time and access to YouTube

Not that handy. I wish. Although he fixes some stuff.
My uncle is like your husband. He built a couple entertainment centers from looking at the pottery barn magazine.
He also built a cradle for my dd when she was born. He does all the work on my aunts house.

INCREDIBLY.

I am routinely astounded at how handy he is. He is a mechanic, a plumber, an electrician, a carpenter, the computer guy, does most of the cooking and on and on. If DH doesn't know how to fix or make something, he will research it and figure it out. If not for him I have no idea how we'd survive!

No, but he can handle simple stuff like painting, spackling. I do most of the plumbing and electrical. You can tell which one of us had a father who taught them household repairs lol

I did, however, give birth to two boys who are much handier than their dad. One can fix or build almost anything. The other one is very handy, but not as creative.:lmao:

I am one of the lucky ones who has a very handy DH. I am handy too, but not to the extent that DH is handy.

I do the painting, landscaping, & mowing. DH weedeats and edges. In fact I am on break from painting dd's room.

I am going to try my hand at making curtains.

As far as handy, DH fixes cars, some plumbing, and most things with a motor and the computer. Remodeling? Nope.

DH can do anything but work on computers.

Plumbing, electrical, building stuff, (last year he made me a chaise lounge chair for the screened in porch), he can grow anything, make anything (also made a very nice fire pit and fixed us up some really nice rain barrels). He can cook too.

He's also taught our DD (18) to be able to do it all also. She can definitely take care of herself. She'll probably intimidate some guys.

No I have to work so we can pay to have everything done by someone else. But he's a great guy and dad to our kids. But I have to admit it peeves me sometimes the simplest thing that he can't do. But after 21 years with him, I've learned to just hire someone cause if he tries to fix something he'll make it worse and more expensive to fix/

Not married, but I've watched my mom do all the handiwork for years. Dad is afraid of everything- mowing the lawn, changing a doorknob, replacing a lightbulb.. I wish I was kidding :confused3

I vowed to NEVER marry someone like that. I'm semi-handy, but I want someone I can do projects with. If he wasn't willing to at least try, forget it!

LOL this is my dad! He can't fix a thing, if he tries it's worse than before. My mom can fix a thing or two - her dad was handy and she took an interest in what he did. Just like our daughter - she's 7 but she loves watching Daddy fix things, she like to know how things work.

Yes, he can fix and build just about anything. His abilities stop at furnaces and A/C units, but we have a great handyman who is very reasonable in these 2 areas.

When we were dating he took 2 weeks off of work and helped my parents remodel our house, the house was very old they took it down the the floor joists and wall studs and started over. He can do plumbing, electricity, fix cars and just about everything else, it helps to grow up on the family farm following your dad and grandpa around doing everything.

He also has this insane ablility to see things in his head and build them. I have learned just to let him go for it, he knows what his limits are and when to ask for help.

Not really. He has learned to fix some things since we bought our house, but it's kind of a crapshoot honestly. Sometimes his attempts work, and sometimes they fail.
