Is "Wide Right" still a thing?

I posted this a bit off-topic on the security check thread, but thought I'd throw it out here, because now I'm wondering.

When do they do rope drop in DCA, on EMH days or non-EMH, or both or neither? Does it matter if it's off season? (we're going 3rd week in September)

Do people still do the wide right thing, and is it still effective for RSR? I haven't done it before, and we are staying offsite.

It's still a thing - in fact the two times we were at rope drop at DCA I overheard people discussing it - it was funny because they were talking about it like it was a big secret and it certainly is NOT!

Do you know that the one time we rode RSR we accidentally did this and ended up towards the front of the line and in the very first car of the day, lol.

I apologize for sounding silly......but I am all for the "tricks" (spend hours on here learning all of them!)....what is "wide right"?

The rope drop for Carsland and Paradise Pier is located to the right of Carthay Circle restaurant. Right before park opening, they replace the rope with what looks like a long gas hose equipped with a nozzle at each end. The RSR staff escort the rope down through to Carsland in an attempt to prevent mass hysteria as people would likely flat out stampede to the ride. As the rope reaches the end of the street those to the right of the rope have an advantage to head first to the standby line. This is sort of neat if you want to be one of the first ones on the ride but it's not entirely necessary!

Does anyone have an experience with riding RSR at opening and using rider swap?
We always go to Toy Story first and have only ever used FP for RSR. I'm curious if we chose to ride at opening if it is still easy, with CM ready, to get a rider swap pass for the youngest.

Not sure about RSR but we were the very first people in line for Space one morning and the first person behind us asked for a rider swap and was good to go with it - the CMs are as prepared at opening as they are any other time of the day to accommodate all needs.

We found single rider worked way better than FP even - as long as everyone is your party is old enough and okay about it. We used FP a few times but then rode it other times using single rider and the wait was far less than when we used our fast passes.

Yes. DCA generally allows guests in 15-30 minutes before park opening to wait behind three roped off areas. One area heads directly to RSR. We always wait closer to Soarin' and head around the long way to Paradise Pier to avoid the RSR crowds.

We got a rider swap pass on our EMH ride a month ago. Some rides never asked to see the waiting adult/child, but RSR did everytime without fail. Get the pass, but save it for later in the day Ride and get the pass. Then get FPs after park opening, then grab another rider swap when using the first FP. THEN use the other FP. You will then have two rider swap passes to use anytime later that day.

Using single rider you are selected as needed to fill cars - this happens a lot since not very many people are parties of 6 or 3 - so they use lots of single riders.

My kids are 13 and 12 so they have no problem using single rider, and actually find it great if they get to race each other or one of their parents. Our last trip my DD and I were in the same car twice and my DH and DS once. As long as you are okay with being split up and just meet up at the exit, then the only think you miss is the long wait!

Thanks. Wasn't sure if you miss any of the pre-show/queue highlights. We've never ridden it before so want to get the full experience but DD is 13 and we have no problem using SRL if the only thing missing is the wait!

We have only gone through the standby line once and it is nothing to miss!

When we went last May for EMH they did not let anyone into the park until the exact time EMH started and they did the countdown. Most people power walked or ran to RSR. Once you got over to that area you were held by a rope/gas hose until a crowd was gathered(maybe 2 minutes) Then they slowly led everyone toward RSR making sure people stayed off the sidewalks. I stayed right and it worked fine, but it was not exactly like i had read. I read that the reason your supposed to stay to the right is because one of the car characters is supposed to come out on the left once you get close to turning into cars land forcing those on the left to the right. Along with the cast members holding the rope blocking people on the left from running into the car character. That did not happen on the 3 times we did EMH that trip. The cast members would just remove the rope/gas hose once we got to cars land, and everyone from the right and the left merged into one line. We were always one of the first few people on, but we were always either at the front of the gate or a few people back. So for us I would not say the wide right technique worked during the EMH. It was more being early to security, so you can be one of the first let into the park. Has anyone had a different experience with this during EMH recently? I'm going again in May, and would love to know how they are working things now. TIA!!

Yeap, sometimes it is better... just depends. Have done SR several times too.

Yes it does depend - one evening when the line was 120 minutes for standby we were told the single rider line was 20 minutes so we didn't bother - but all the other times we honestly walked right up and were on in like 5 minutes. So if it's super busy then you might want to ask before entering as they should have an idea.
