Is Wi-Fi available in the WDW resorts?

Are there any plans afoot to bring the other deluxes on board? I was hoping that either AKL or Poly would since I've been leaning that way.

I'm confused, when they say "common areas", does that mean you can only access from those spots, and not your room? Or is that just WiFi and I could ethernet from the room?

High Speed Internet Arrives at CSR.
It has been a long time in coming, but High Speed Internet Access is being rolled out at the WDW Resorts, starting with Coronado Springs beginning 10/1/03. The price is $4.95 per hour or $9.95 for 24-contiguous hours charged to the room account. You will need to supply your own laptop and cable! Technical support will be available via your in room phone.

Wi-Fi is Also Available
Wi-Fi: High Speed Wireless Internet Access is available to Guests staying at CSR!!! Guests with Wi-Fi enabled laptop computers or PDA's will be able to access the Internet from the common areas at CSR. Smart City is the vendor providing this service and 24-hour technical support for those Guests who need it. Smart City will bill the Guest using a secure credit card transaction via the on-screen Internet connection. Requirements: Requires a wireless interface card (WIC), available for purchase in the resort's business center. Price: $4.99 for the first 60 minutes or $9.95 for 24 contiguous hours. Coronado Springs areas include the Main Lobby, Convention Center Hallway, the Dig Site (Feature Pool), Francisco's.

Each will cost you a separate fee.

DH and I both need HSI for our laptops when on vacation for work. Yes, I know we are on vaction but we still have to work. DH uses his BB device while in the parks to answer some of his email while we are touring or watching a show. I think he had a good signal in most parks. We finalized our mortage for our new house while watching Tarzan Rocks last year using his BB. We have stayed at the CR and the HSI service there worked well (not as fast as what we were used to but it got the job done.) We are staying at the GF this year. We would have loved to have stayed at the Poly but couldn't because dial-up is totally unexceptable. I hope this helps someone who needs these services like we do.

Oh my word - I feel like I live in the stone ages or something! I haven't got a clue what wi-fi is. And, funny thing is, when I did a search for it, I found a definition. After reading it, I'm still clueless! Anyone want to explain it in simple English to this grandma?

Wireless internet. The ability to surf the net without any wires connected. Your computer receives a signal allowing you to connect.

Most hotels require the use of a cable to connect to a high speed connection or a dial up modem. This allows you to be sitting in a coffe shop or somewhere checking your email.

Hi!

Is Wi-Fi standard in the WDW resorts now?

Thanks!
Sheila

There seems to be come confusion in the responses to this question. The OP asked about Wi-Fi, but I think many of the responses are talking about (wired) broadband.

The convention hotels offer Wi-Fi in their common areas, but not in the rooms (where you will find wired broadband). I believe this is pretty standard for most big city hotels so I don't think Disney is behind on this. However, some of the affordable and moderate Disney hotels (CSR being the exception) do need to get broadband to keep up with the competition.

::yes::

I use my blackberry for email wherever we go, but ended up getting a cellular card for my laptop. It's not broadband, but it's wireless and connects pretty much everywhere. This way I can (read: or else!) work an hour or two each day in the chaise lounge while the kids bop about in the pool. It wasn't an excuse to get a new gadget, I swear! ;)
