Is upgrading to a room w/ a Verandah worth it?

I would not book a cruise without the verhanda. But that is just me...I am a nature/scenery nut and loved getting up before everyone else and sitting out there watching us dock. It was soooo peaceful and to me...that is what vacation is all about! Of course, with kids there is not too much peace - but I will take what I can get, and the time when everyone else was asleep was the only peaceful time we had! We also left the door open quite a bit. I have told my DH that I would gladly save money and postpone the vacation for another few months to pay for the cost. I figure if I am on vacation - it is worth it! We skimp the rest of the year, so why not spluge a little! I also splurged on the drinks :) - I am not a big drinker, but had fun trying all of the daily specials!
Have a blast whatever you decide!

Ariel&FloundersMom, it seems they never left their room (there were food trays piled outside their cabin all day long). They were always on the verandah or kept the door open. It was seven days of listening to them scream and swear at each other and their children. They were the noisiest people I ever heard. They all used the worst language at all times, and always loudly. There was never a peaceful time to sit out there and read or watch the ocean.

A couple of years ago, we booked an inside guarantee and ended up with a balcony. I think we were out there twice. We enjoyed sleeping with the door open, but that wouldn't be worth the price of the balcony for us.

Our last cruise, we sailed with two other couples. We had two inside cabins and one balcony. Again, we had coffee out there one night. Other nights, we ended up on a quiet deck area on the back of the ship that was much more enjoyable than the balcony.

DH always jokes that we catch up on our sleep in the inside cabins since you can turn out the lights and experience complete darkness - best sleep ever!

When making a decision to upgrade to a verandah or not, the bottom line is always what PlutoJudy points out. We've paid this extra money and what if the person next door is a smoker? What if they are really loud and obnoxious?

Now, if I had a group of 3 families who wanted a verandah and wouldn't smoke..then I'd be ready to spend the extra money! Wouldn't that be nice if DCL made a nonsmoking section for verandahs?

DH and I did our 1st cruise for our Birthday in April. Cat 6 is a great room and worth the price if you just want to relax in your room and enjoy the view. The more sea days you have the better.

We had a cat 6 verandah room on deck 5. We loved it and would never cruise without it. We had always booked 2 cat 11's but decided to do one room this time with the verandah. My DH did not spend all his time on the verandah- which I was afraid of. However we loved it tin the mornig just to sit out before breakfast, late in the afternoon when we were changing for dinner or late at night after being up on deck it was nice to retirn to our verandah and unwind there before retiring for the night.

My 2. DS's were in the cat 11 across the hall but also came in to enjoy the verandah.

I say go for it and enjoy!

We had a porthole for our first Disney cruise and a verandah on another cruiseline. While we both enjoyed the verandah, if the cost difference was huge, I'd happily take the porthole just so I could be back on one of Disney's ships.
