Is this true? An MS CM said renting points is NOT allowed.

I rented 15 points from another member to add to my existing reservation. I had to link my reservation to the other members reservation. When I was explaining the situation to the CM, she very snootily said, renting points is not allowed with your DVC membership. I told her that I had never heard that and she again repeated the same sentence and added that "it is right there on the contract that you signed" When we ended the call she made sure to state it again,"I have noted it on your reservation that I told you the rules about renting points and that it is not allowed" she was more than snotty and I wished I had said I would do the phone survey at that point.

So! Is this true? I know the Dis follows the rules so I am not sure that I belive her but it did get me a little worried.... What is the scoop?

:)

While renting happens all of the time, it is not allowed.

Actually, according to our POS renting most certanly is allowed, but there is a clause to prohibit "commercial" type renting. In fact, there is a clause in the POS that states we need to inform MS when we are renting.

Point transfers, on the other hand, do have a clause that prohibit point transfers for compensation, but it happens all the time.

That is not true.

The POS expressly allows renting. In fact, the quality assurance paperwork also mentions renting. It does say the you would be competing with Disney and that there is no guarantee that you will be able to find renters as a result.

There is a clause that prohibits "commercial" renting, which the POS does not define. Disney has apparently defined it as renting 20 or more reservations.

Op, do not worry about it. That CM was confused.

renting is allowed as long as it's not for 'commercial purposes '

it says so in the contract and the handbook they send out each year!

If you ever get another MS CM who insists that renting is not allowed, ask to speak with her supervisor. Renting is expressly permitted in the POS and details are outlined multiple times in the document. This is another example of a poory trained CM who is interjecting her own interpretation. As a matter of fact, if you recall her name you can always call back and ask to speak with a supervisor about the incident. Those calls are often recorded for "training" and quality assurance purposes.

In addition, you were not even the member who rented the reservation - you are the renter.

However, if you rented the reservation from a member who is on MS list of "commercial" renters (20 or more renntals in a year), then it's possible that something could happen with that reservation.

Thanks everyone! I wish I had the info on hand when I was speaking to her. As if renting 15 points would be a red flag....;)

It may be in your wording, you are actually making a reservation and then renting that, not acually renting points. Most MS CMs know that while there is a technical difference that eveyone uses the terms interchangably.

You didn't rent points. You either transferred points from one member into your account or you rented a reservation from a member for that one night. If you rented a reservation, you have no access to that reservation until the moment you check into the resort. You need to have the other member note your initial stay (on your own points) on that second reservation so they can be linked. And you note the second reservation on the one that you own as well. The other member must add any requests since they own the reservation.

If a member is renting a reservation, they are actually required by the Public Offering Statement to notify MS that they are renting that reservation to a non-member. BUT, do not tell MS that you transferred points for $XX from another member. Compensation for transferred points is actually not permitted.

And like everyone says, renting a reservation is strictly allowed as long as it is not a commercial venture.
