Is this to much work for a 1st grader?

DD has homework Mon-Thur. She has a math page and/or a handwriting sheet that she has to do. She has 5 spelling words to write and study to be tested on Friday. And she has to read 20 minutes a day. Does this seem alot for a 1st grader? I know my memory isn't the greatest but I don't remember having homework in school until I was like in 4th grade.

My daughter is in 1st and this is her homework schedule...

Monday - Reading night. She has to read that week's story out of the textbook. We go over some of the exercises afterwards.

Tuesday - Math night. Math worksheet and if there is a test that week we study for it.

Wednesday - Study for spelling test the next day.

Thursday - Write a page in the journal and read for 20 minutes.

Friday - Technically no homework but the spelling list gets sent home for extra study time)

It really doesn't take us long to get the homework done. The only night we spend a lot of time on is math test night. Mo has 10 new spelling words and 2 review words every week. This week was a review week and she had 16 words.

Sounds just like us. Quick math homework, some spelling and read for 15 minutes.

Hi Ginger. My ds is now in 3rd grade, but I remember his 1st grade homework being very similar--math, reading and spelling (along with the occasional Social Studies and Science) practice everyday but Fridays, and 15 minutes of Accelerated Reader reading each night. I am to this day grateful for the AR program--it really got Chris hooked on books. I know I certainly never had that much homework in 1st grade--however I'm 37! :) His 3rd grade homework includes work in three of his subjects daily, spelling practice, 30 minutes of AR and sometimes projects to do over the weekends. He usually has a test in each subject every week (three on Fridays :crazy2: ). It's so verrrrrrrry different from when I was in school!

Thanks guys. We thought it seemed like alot but good to know it sounds normal. The problem with my DD is she has to do everything perfect so for her to do her handwriting sheet, it take 30 minutes to write a few sentences. Maybe throughout the school year she will speed up a bit. Thanks again.

It always took my son 30 minutes to write a few sentences because I was always saying, "Your handwriting is too sloppy! Your teacher won't even be able to read it! You'll have to do them over more neatly!" ;)

Be sure that she doesn't spend so much time on doing each and every letter and line perfectly that she misses the text of the message! My sister was like that. She'd spend ages on getting each letter and loop perfect, and then when I'd ask her to tell me the sentence she'd just spent so much time writing, she had no idea. She wasn't looking at the words, only the shapes, and had no comprehension of what she was writing. Once we got her to ease up a bit on the perfection, she started to love writing, and her handwriting actually got better, easier and quicker because she was enjoying it.

:earsboy:

That sounds exatly like what my DD had in 1st grade. My DD was exactly the same way about making sure things were perfect, eventually they realize they can't have it that way all the time.

::yes:: Sounds like last year. He'd have nightly homework, plus a half an hour of reading every night, and his spelling words, which he'd study for an hour or so because less than 100% wasn't ok for him! We had three reports during the year also and the occasional "art" project too - but I'll spare you my rant about those!

This year he gets spelling words on Friday for a test the following Friday, he may have one sheet the whole week to do at home and then he reads for half an hour before bed. The new school is much easier!

For my second grade daughter. Math and language skills every night. 25 spelling words a week. She has one book report a month.

Steve

A couple of math worsheets, a few spelling words, a reading sheet, and read for 15 minutes 4 times a week.

I think it's important to get them into a homework routine early on. It seems like a lot now but it's only going to get worse.

My DD is also in 1st grade and she gets a lot of homework. On Mondays, they get a new homework packet which includes and I have sitting in front of me:

A book log~ Have to read every day of the week and she has to write the title of each book and I sign it. M-S, plus one extra book (8).

Choose a story from the book log and write the setting, characters, beginning, middle and end.

Writing Homework in writing journal, make a list of specific info and incorporate into a story.

Ten spelling words, which they are tested on the following Monday.

3 Math Sheets, front and back (including addition and subtraction~vertical subtraction). Math~word problems in which they illustrate the answers by drawing dots, shapes, etc. I just counted the problems in this week's packet, 101 subtraction and addition problems and 4 word problems.

We spread out the work over the course of the week, so she won't be overwhelmed. I have noticed that DD's teacher is really pushing the kids academically, DD has learned A LOT so far and she seems to like it. I'm surprised at what she is doing in 1st grade, my boys weren't assigned as much homework in 1st grade. There are so many signatures, time and so much more needed from me and DH for all 3 kids, it's a miracle we get it all done.

Wow, my DD is lucky I guess. She's also in 1st grade. The only homework she ever has is to read and it's her choice to do it or not. If she reads a book to me or DH we sign a sheet saying she read it and send it back to school. After so many "book reports", they get to choose something from the treasure box. That's all she has.
Her teacher did say that they will be having spelling lists sent home probably starting in mid-October when they will start having spelling tests, but didn't mention any other homework.

Remy is in 1st grade and we get homework every night! She has a math page, a grammer page, she has words that she has to practice writing all week and send back to class, spelling, sometimes math projects like getting spoons and forks and putting in numbered piles. Then she brings home two different books each day and has to read them. I have to sign off that she has done everything. We usually spend a good two hours more or less(rare) doing all this. At first we were told she would only have homework 4 days, but so far it has been everyday! I never even dreamed it would be this much. By the time we are done, she has just enough time to eat, get a shower and go to bed (8pm). I think this is too much homework for a 6 year old. Not to mention that her teacher doesn't take into consideration that besides having other children at home, parents have to cook dinner! I have had to have dinner ready to put in the oven or heat by the time she gets home at 4pm and I am tired of having to rush!

My first grader has a math sheet every night. Plus her spelling words for a Friday Test. In addition we do the book it reading program. Her goal this month is 15 minutes 5 days per week. She'll get a pizza coupon if she reaches her goal.
