Strange question; Say I have some points from my current use year (2006) that I want to use for a reservation next year (2007, next years use year) instead of banking. Then I cancel the ressie next year, near the ressie date. I assume they go into holding with the 60 day rule. Can these points be in limbo (holding) forever if I continue the scenario to make reservations (within 60 days) with them but need to cancel? Or am I missing something? Seems to create a way around banking one year forward and loosing them if not used that next year. :cool1:

You would have to bank the 2006 points to use them for the 2007 use year ressie, and if that ressie is cancelled less than 31 days out, you can use it only for a reservation that occurs within the last 60 days of your use year. Are you proposing to again cancell that ressie and extend it another 60 days etc. etc? They are going to expire at the end of your use year, so my thought is NO you can't do that.

The way I understand it, the only way you would be able to use '06 points for a ressie during your '07 UY would be to bank them.

Maybe someone could enlighted me if I'm wrong.

So you are saying I cannot use a current use year points to book a ressie next use year (within the 7/11 month window)?

Everything goes by date of stay, not the date you make the reservation. If you are booking a stay with dates in your 2007 use year, the only way to use 2006 points is to bank them.

Just wanted to add:

All points in the holding account will automatically expire at the end of the use year if they are not used before then. The holding account doesn't let you get around anything - it just makes it more difficult to use up your points.

For the OP's example -

If you bank 2006 points, make a reservation within your 2007 use year and then cancel that ressie less than 31 days prior to arrival, the points are returned to your account but go into the holding account. Those holding account points expire at the end of the 2007 use year if you don't or can't use them before then. Since availability is often limited 60 days or less prior to arrival, it is entirely possible that yo will not be able to make a reservation with those points before they expire!

Bottom Line: Cancel your reservations at least 31 days prior to arrival if you can!

Best wishes -
