We were adopted by a stray kitten. We have all a couple of other cats. When my son Brady get around this new cat bless his heart he sneeze and coughs up a lung. Is it possible to be allergic to one cat and not another?

This is based on personal experience -- I am deathly allergic to cats - I can walk into an overachieving clean freaks home who cleaned right before I came and has the cats put away and can typically tell within 10 minutes.

That said I have some friends with older cats whose homes I can visit for several hours or even a whole evening with no problems.

On the other hand I notice baby kitties are the death of me - I am sneezing within seconds/throat tight etc.

I think so. Is the new cat long haired? If the stray is really new to your house, he could be carrying pollen and grasses on his coat. Kitty may need a bath! ;)

Thanks I just don't know what else it could be

I have always been very allergic to cats that were not mine.
When I was a kid I had a cat that slept on my pillow, but when we went to visit my Grandfather every year I would end up in the hospital with an allergy/asthma attack. (fortunatly its not as bad anymore)
We have 5 cats now :scared1:, and usually it takes me a week or so to get "used" to them then I would be fine.

What were attacks like extereme coughing sneezing?? I put that cat out he still coughing and sneezing. I wonder how long it take to get out of his systerm

It can take me up to two days after I have been exposed to cats - I might not be sneezing that whole time but my throat is swollen, eyes itching, it is reallly very uncomfortable.

I would try bathing the cat.
Maybe it is something put on the cat flea treatment etc...

Yes it is. I have 2 domestic med/long hairs and no problem. I was then adopted by a short hair and have been on medication for allergies ever since. Short hairs tend to trigger allergies my vet said, because they lose/ replace their hair more often and therefore "pollute" your air more.

I had a cat way before I met my DH.
She didn't live with me when we met and when I decided to move her in with me from my parents house, not-yet-DH loaded up on allergy med's to try to be able to be around her. It was going to be an experiment and if it didn't work, she was going to go back to mom and dad's house..

My kitty has NEVER bothered DH. She sleeps on his chest and they're pretty close now.

Other cats? DH is sneezing/coughing within moments.

I should add I have another friend who is highly allergic and my kitty doesn't bother her either. We call her hypo-allergenic kitty.

Many cat allergies are to the saliva, not the fur. Cats just wash their own fur, so their saliva is on it. In that sense, I believe it is possible to be allergic to one cat more than another. One of my friend's cats likes to headbutt and be in my face, I leave with red eyes and a sore throat. My mom's cat even if she's sleeping on my chest all night long, doesn't bother me at all (she's very long haired-Maine coon mix).

My son has severe allergies to cats among other things. His allergist told us years ago sometimes its just the pet that breaks the camels back. Meaning they can be tolerant to certain allergens and adding one more even if it is the same one causes a reaction.

My son is so allergic that he reacts when visiting a friends house that hasn't had his cat for a few years now. Every once in a while he comes in contact with a place that the cat must have been.

He also has allergies to certain dog breeds and not others so I would say that yes, absolutely your child could be having a problem with this cat and not the others.

I hope you figure it all out and he starts feeling better!:)

Then it sounds like he may need to see his doctor to be evaluated. Does he take asthma or allergy medication? You know it could be a separate issue and have nothing to do with the cat at all.

I have a call into his ped. I hope she calls me back soon. If not I'm gonig to take him to urgent care

Good thinking. :thumbsup2 Let us know how it turns out. Hope Brady feels better quickly. Keep a good eye on his breathing. Many young children cough instead of wheeze when having asthma symptoms. Hugs to you.
