Is this fake, is this a rumor?

Sure but we, the movie going audience, do not support new stories with new characters now. We only seem to now support sequels, reboots, and prequels. That's why we're getting Mufasa, Moana 2, Inside Out 2, Toy Story 5, Finding Nemo 3 (rumored), and The Incredibles 3 (rumored). This is not just a Disney fan issue. It's industry wide. For Disney, there's a risk now to making original movies for the animated studios and Pixar. Based on what Iger recently said, I fear Pixar is just going to turn into a sequels and prequels factory to boost the existing IP. If we're not going to support originals, what choice does Disney have?

Well, support is usually defined by how much money it makes. The economy itself won't support the industry if every movie out there has to make half a billion dollars to turn a profit. Disney is kind of like the government. They don't have a revenue problem. They have a spending problem. Develop a good story. Don't spend like a drunken sailor on production and marketing. Make a profit at the box office. Then use it on Disney+.

I think the entire live action series was a waste. Disney could have just re-released the originals at the box office for a small fraction of the price and made more money. In 10 years, nobody will even remember the live action versions. It will always be about the originals. Huge wasted opportunity on Disney's part.

Well they're re-releasing the original Lion King next month so that'll be an interesting opportunity to test that theory. For reference, the live reimagining made 1.66 billion dollars.

But Disney didn’t become famous for making new stories with new characters. Disney adapted fairy tales.
There are still tons of fairytales, myths and legends around the world for Disney to adapt.

I still believe that Disney has a strategy that when they want to create a new (truly new) movie that they first decide on a country/culture to place it in and then create a story around it. This to combat the complaint that there are too many white leads. To fill in the blanks on the map.
Disney: Wish, Strange World, Encanto, Raya, Moana, Big Hero Six.
Pixar: Turning Red, Soul, Coco
I would add Luca as well, it is a white lead, however, the US has almost 18 million people from Italian descent. Last movie set in Italy was Pinocchio?

What is missing in both Disney and Pixar's line up are the contintents Australia and Africa. Australia has the Finding Nemo movies, so they might not be at the top of the list, but I wouldn't be surprised if we will see within the coming years are movies set in any of the African countries, or the first people of Australia (the continent, not just the country).

While we're here, anyone else find some of the accents in recent Disney entertainment a bit offensive. Almost stereotypical caricatures at times.

Which characters?

The actors are trained to speak in a similar voice /tone /melody as their character in the movies. If it was a caricature back then, it probably still is now.

It's actually interesting because when I look back, I will see things that were a push for Diversity, like in the 70's and 80's, and the effort was pure-minded, but the characters do come off as stereotypes that today seem suspect. And yet, sometimes they still do this when portraying new groups that need representation - they can hedge too close to charicature. Then again, sometimes they overcompensate in the other direction and make sure that the character is absolutely not any of the things that might be stereotypical, but that can then come off as ingenunie. I mean, stereotypes do often have some root in reality. So, what's worse? A character that checks all of the boxes associated with their group, or a character that checks none of the boxes and doesn't even really represent said group other than a label? I'm not taking a position here, as I don't really know the answer. I imagine a balance is probably the best route, but I'm weird like that. 🙂

"Audiences don't hate diverse characters.
What they hate is being slammed as bigots for rejecting bad work from pretentious, unskilled activists posing as writers.
If the demography of your characters becomes more important than the story, your story will probably suck."

Nobody will take issue if you criticize the work in an intelligent and logical manner. It's when that does not happen - and you know as well as I do that this is often the case - that people call that out for what it is.

I just laugh and move on. Unfortunately these days, legitimate criticism gets drowned out / co-opted by the clickbait fringe all too often.. 😞
Passion of the Christ and Titanic are just two obvious reasons to ignore just about everyone. Go see what seems up your alley.
My father, who after a military carreer as a cryptologist and language expert, became an English literature professor and often told us
" Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. Those who can do neither become art critics. "
It was subtle dig at colleages wo'd never done an honest days work outside of Acedemia, as well as the irony of hime teaching. And a huge raspberry to a class of writers he consider absolotely irrelevant

They needed more diversity but it’s a balance. Keep the charm and excellence without getting so hung up in checking off boxes that you lose it all. Did anyone have any issues with The Jungle Book and later on Pocahontas (even if the story is untrue) and Mulan? They could have done more like those.

I think that people would still enjoy new stories with new characters but they need to be well done. A lot of dreck has been created and that dreck includes all races and ethnicity. People lose their faith that a Disney product will be good automatically and reputation counts for a lot.

The racists who complain aren’t even worth addressing. Not everyone who criticizes is a racist but often gets called that. And what exactly is wrong with redheads?

Exactly. Why is it okay to disparage people by hair color still.
If on the other foot and any other race is replaced it's off to war the kooks go with shouts of " cultural appropriation "
