Is this dangerous?

Whenever I'm sick (coughing) or in a lot of pain (post surgery) (and once when I had an inner ear infection that made me super dizzzzzzzy) or something and am having trouble sleeping, I take dramamine or benadryl (normal dose) to knock me out so I lose like a day or so of pain.

I love doing this. I have my mom and DH doing it now too. I never hear of anyone else doing it though. I always want to recommend it to someone, but am afraid it might somehow be dangerous.

Is it?

I know of a woman who used to give her adopted children Benadryl before they went to bed at night. They slept through the night... Hmmm...

And once a lady gave her two children Benadryl when they were settling into their seats on the plane ride home... the kids slept the entire time. I felt sorry for them, but it was better than them jumping up. down & around in their seats the entire flight.

Nope, I don't think it's dangerous. I do it off an on when I'm having trouble sleeping. I do tend to wake up a little foggy though.

Our vet even recommended giving 2 benedryl to the dog when we need to give him ear medicine. Aside from making him sleepy, he was fine with them.

Oh yah...I did give my kids dramamine once for a long car ride. They used to get carsick and it was going to be a long windy road. It was nice...they slept the whole way.

They don't get carsick anymore..drats... :rotfl2:

I've heard that before many times as well. Benadryl usually doesn't do it for me, so I have taken dramamine before flying to help me fall asleep (I don't get motion sickness, I just don't sleep well on planes, and it was suggested to take it on my LAX flights). I've heard doctors suggesting it to friends so I assume as long as you are taking a normal dose, it's pretty safe :)

I used to do it for my insomnia, but all of the sudden it started wiring me. My legs would start twitching and it drove me nuts.

I don't think anything is wrong with it. Heck, I've taken a couple of Vicadin at night, just to get some sleep!

I've done this once on a long flight - our pediatrician recommended it!

Hey jeanny you live a few towns over from me  ...anyhow I have had to do this with my kids before as per pediatrician when they have had earaches and colds.

When I'm sick, I drink Nighttime Theraflu right before bed. The antihistamine has me out in no time.

DH likes NyQuil for the help sleeping when he's sick. Nyquil makes me sick.

I used to take Nyquil the night before a regatta in college. I would be so excited I couldnt sleep. Not good for the performance. Worked wonderfully, I just made sure that it didnt become a habbit and that I had enough time to sleep it off.

A friend of mine gives her kids (7 & 4) NyQuil when she wants to knock them out. I wouldn't do it, but...

Whatever floats your boat! Any port in a storm! And other platitudes! :teeth:

Well I hope it's not dangerous, because when I'm severly lacking sleep I have taken Benadryl to knock me out. I did it Wednesday, because it's been the week from you know where and I just haven't slept thanks to stress. I also will take it when I have a cold, if I'm not on other allergy meds at that time.

That's exactly what happened to me! Used to make me sleepy, but then started making me wired. REALLY wired. :hyper:

Not a problem as long as you are not taking any other medications that say you shouldn't take antihistamines at the same time (and there are some medications that specifically state that)..

I've had numerous doctors tell me to use these products if I have trouble falling asleep.. They're not addictive like most sleeping pills are and for most people do not leave them feeling drowsy and drugged in the morning..

BTW, the active ingredient in Benadryl is the same as the active ingredient as a lot of the OTC sleep aids.

We sometimes give benadryl in the hospital to help people sleep.
It's one of the active ingredients in Tylenol PM (it's the "PM" part).
Shouldn't be a problem using it.

I agree with everyone else and I can add that I have gotten advice from a nurse to help the kids break a cycle of not sleeping (my two youngest are horrible sleepers). I can use it one night but the next night it will wire me like some of the others have said and I won't sleep the whole night. Plus it's an awful not sleeping phase...makes you want to go out an jog the entire night.

You might be interested in knowing that while pregnant with my last I had morning sickness in the night...yuck!! My doctor had me take an over the counter sleeping pill. I really helped me get a good nights sleep and I wasn't sick to my stomach. So you could try that safely too.
