Let's say there are 2 DVC owners...one with home points at resort A and the other at resort B.

The person who owns resort A wants to book a 10 night stay and really wants to stay at resort B.

Can resort B owner make a reservation for resort A owner at resort B at 11 mark using their points? And if so can either happen:

At 7 month mark change reservation using resort A points and resort B owner gets his/her points back OR
Resort A owner transfer points for stay to Resort B owner thus leaving resort B owner with all his/her original points.

If its best for A to transfer points to B is there a cost involved? If so, how much? Also how are points transferred?

Thanks

If I understand correctly what you are saying, at the 7 month mark B has to swap points that do have the 11th month advantage for those that do not. This cannot be done unless there is availability for a reservation using those points which pretty much defeats the point of having B make the reservation in the first place.

I think a transfer can work if you find two people that want to swap and both get the 11 month advantage. But finding someone to swap with has been very difficult, just check my post history...

Other than transferring first then booking or coordinating a cancelation from owner B while owner A tries to book that, I don't think this will work. You could do a private exchange where you each stayed on the others points, you could rent from another owner at that resort, you could transfer points to each other if you use different UY, you could simply swap reservations as you would for any rental and likely a couple of other similar variations. I wouldn't go through all of this simply to get a reservation unless it's a close friend and each is very clear about expectations. Take a look at the thread on David's and pregnancy to see what can happen unexpectedly.

Definitely co-renting is the way to go. Just agree on a price per point for whichever reservation is costlier, and pay out the difference.

You can't transfer points both in and out of your account in a given use year. One transfer only- which is what Dean was alluding to about transferring different UY points.

This would potentially raise future year headaches, given the restrictions inherent in using different year's points. So it would be much easier just to make the other party's reservation out of your account, and put their names on it, then have them do the same for you.

When a reservation is made during the home resort advantage, you can not swap out points at 7 months with other non resort points. There is no way to try to secure something with another owners points and then give them your points to trade into the original reservation so they get their own points back.

As mentioned, it can happen if there is still availability but in that case, you'd be able to book it as well without having to transfer.

Thanks for the info...I am looking ahead to 2 trips next year (one end of May the other middle of August) to make best use of our APs...I am renting points from a friend and am trying to figure out best use of available points.

I was first thinking of booking at their home resort (SSR) at 11 month for both trips and then at 7 month marks seeing if there is availability at resorts we prefer and switch...if not we at least know we have reservations for dates we want to go.

Unfortunately there is not enough points to book what we need at SSR for both trips.

My best case scenario is to book 2 Value studios at AKV for May trip (shorter of 2 trips) this then leaves me with enough points for various options in August at different resorts or split stay if we have to (I know sometimes it's hard to get 10 nights in a row at same resort) and hopefully one of the options will be available at 7 month mark.

I guess all I can do is wait and hope I can get what I need at 7 month mark for May then take it from there....

FYI that the value category is quite popular at AKV because of the low points. It will likely take a lot of luck to get 2 of them at 7 months although May is a slower DVC time.

AKV value is very difficult to get at 7 months out even during low to moderate DVC demand times like May, and value studios are already filled for 2/3 of the days in May 2015 and likely most or all of the rest will disappear before 7 months out. It is fairly easy to get rooms at 7 months out in both May and August at WDW except for certain "usual suspects": AKV concierge and value, BWV standard and boardwalk view, BLT standard view, lately VGF studios, and at times BCV and BLT Theme Park view studios particularly for days near Memorial day and late Aug before Labor Day. It sounds like you will be looking for low point cost at 7 months out but it is exactly lower cost units -- BWV standard, AKV value, and BLT standard--that are hardest to get at 7 months out. OKW studios (also low point cost) will most likely be open.

I suspect getting things like AKV value and BWV standard are dramatically unlikely. Personally I'd just plan to get what you need at SSR and if you need more than you can reserve with the points in question, I'd either ask them to borrow or just do a rental from someone else to round it out. The only thing I'd consider hanging my hat on at 7 months out in this situation would be OKW. That way things are clean, done and there are no variables to affect the trip itself.

When booking at 7 months, you can purchase up to 24 one-time-use points from MS for $15 each. Mention it in case that will solve your problem.
