Is this appropriate for an elementary school?

This just isn't sitting well with me.

My son came home from kindergarten today with a Build-A-Bear poster and pamphlet. I asked him about it, and he told me all about how "some ladies from Build-A-Bear came in and talked to us." I asked him what they talked about, and, well, they described what fun it is to come to Build-A-Bear and create your stuffed animal - he was able to describe every little step to me.

Isn't this nothing but ADVERTISING? When did businesses start coming to public schools and soliciting business from 5 year olds? Is it just coincidence that Christmas is coming up?

I just find the whole thing highly inappropriate.

i agree, totally inappropriate for any business to pitch toys at school, anytime, especially near the holidays.

Ditto

Wow, I think that is TOTALLY inappropriate - at any age! I would call the teacher/principal and ask about this. I would also find out if any other such 'visitors' are scheduled to come in to 'talk' to the children, and if so, perhaps a nice sick day should be planned.

when you get older and get a job, they replace build a bear with united way

Inappropriate.
Marketing to children is becoming a big business. I think we all need to complain when we see stuff like this.
Our school sends home its lunch menus on ads -I have complained on many levels and they refuse to change it. The menus promote cartoons and movies.

Has Build-a-Bear joined forces with Scholastic? I'm on the email list for Scholastic, and just received a BAB promotion from them.

Well, if they have it seems they did it for a reason. I wouldn't like BAB coming into the school and advertising to the children. Makes you wonder what's next?!

I just checked all the stuff he brought home, nothing says Scholastic on it anywhere, but I guess that doesn't really rule it out.

Now thats just not right. One it took time out of their day to try and sell them something, and two, what if you have a little kid that had a parent that just lost a job, the last thing they would need is a child coming home from school with a build a bear pamplet and telling them they want to go.
- My other thought is maybe it is school fundraiser of some kind. But if that were the case, you would think you would have received some information with the pamplet.
Let us know if you follow up with them. I am just wondering the reasoning they use.

that will be really sad for the kids whose parents can't afford to take their kids to build-a-bear. A lot of the other kids will probably manipulate their parents to take them there and be showing off their bears at school. Really sets up a class divide in the classroom...

I went to both websites and couldn't find anything, either. I'm sorry I didn't save the email....

Don't agree with this at all...very surprised that they were allowed to come in all. I bet the principal will be getting a "few" phone calls about this in the morning !

That's unbelievable. :sad2: It doesn't matter if they are affiliated with a company doing business with the school either.

I have heard that BAB is working with schools as a fundraiser. ;)

Inappropriate and worse than that...for those kids whose parents aren't gonna buy 'em a $50 stuffed bear..it's setting them up for major dissapointment. :sad2:

Highly inappropriate...I can't believe that a school would allow that in their building, especially in the classroom!
