Is this a new trend?

For the last month of so I have heard grown women call little girls Momma. Lets go momma, Do you like this momma.

I don't understand why anyone would call a little girl momma.

I've noticed this also, specifically with my friends of certain races.

I wouldn't call my little girl little momma, but its their kid they can call it poopoo head for all I care.

Pretty common in the latin communities for at least the last two decades that I've had contact with them, and recently have heard it more in the african american ones as well. I think it's just a endearment like honey or lady or little man/baby girl even bubba or sissy. I know that growing up I would hear little girls refered to as a 'little mommy' a lot. I never really gave it a second thought.

I don't know if it is the new trend or not, but I know it is very common for Mexican families to call their daughters "Momma". I grew up in San Antonio, TX and have heard littles girls being referred to as "Momma" my whole life. However, it was only among Mexican families.

My DH is Puerto Rican and I have seen it a lot. It never made sense to me either and I don't do it with my daughter, but it's pretty common to hear it. Also, grown women calling other women Mommy. I have a coworker that calls me this. Again, don't understand it, it's just the culture, I guess.

My neighbor across the street is from NY and of Puerto Rican desent...she calls me Momma and Mommy all the time...as does her husband..I get it sometimes from some of the Spanish guys I work with too...

My DD best friend's mother is form Columbia, she is a dear. She calls her DD momma and I have even heard her call their female dog momma, and she has never had puppies. I think it is very cute when she does.

I have a very very good friend who took care of my girls while I worked (when she was close enough to do so), she called them both Momma, and she called her girls Momma when they were younger. She is not of Mexican descent but she used the term anyway. It's not a big deal, it's just like calling them sweetie or patootie head, which she also called them. LOL

Nope, not new. I've heard it my whole life - I've even called my little girl Mommy from time to time, and I'm caucasian.

Yes - very popular among certain cultures, esp the Hispanic. I hear it a lot.

Matter of fact, my sister married into a Hispanic family and she calls my niece Mamma. I love it! Just a term of endearment =)

The way I understand it, the parents are "papá" and "mamá", while "papi" and "mami" are just terms of endearment, male and female.

My SD does this with her DD. My SD is so white you can see through her skin. Of course she hangs out with people of hispanic descent and african american descent. She has taken up their different linguistic traits. Drives my DH nuts.

I've heard and seen it a lot (moms calling girls that) but never thought it was odd until I saw a mom call her toddler son "momma" last week in the grocery store.

Yep, it's really common in the latino culture. My BF is Costa Rican and she calls her DD "Mamita" (little mama), "mami" or "mommy" all the time. When she was a baby she called her "gordita" (little fatty) which I also thought was funny but cute.

Hispanic people often do this and have done this for a long time. I'm hispanic but I don't do this with my daughter. Doesn't feel natural to me.
