Is this a fair price? (pet sitting) update post 30

I have a Pet Nanny that comes to my house to take care of our dog while we are out of town. She comes 3 times a day and walks her twice, lets her out to potty the 3rd time. That is $22 a day. If we are just gone for a majority of the day, she comes once, and walks her. That is $12.

1st Issue:

Do these amounts seem fair? :confused3

Not to me. Not for twice a day. If it was once a day the original amount might be reasonable.

No matter how 'on the way' it is they still have to make themselves available twice a day for almost 2 weeks meaning they change their personal schedule for 2 weeks.

For a professional that is not an issue since their job is to go to multiple houses daily.

Even though your expectation is that they'll be in and out in a few minutes I know I would have a hard time not giving an animal at least a few minutes attention when I know they're alone for 13 days.

Plus if anything happens to either the animals or house during those 13 days that person will have to deal with it one way or another.

As for the dog... I wouldn't take care of it under your conditions.

I know my dogs would be distressed to be forced to go to the bathroom inside. To try to hold it for 12 hours at a time for 13 days would be unhealthy for them.

I have not read all the posts, but when we go on vacation I have a few young gentlemen from church com and stay with them and they have free reign within reason. It is usually 7 days and I pay about 140.00. That way they get tv, games, free food ( I buy there favorite stuff) I dont like my animals left alone at night. They go do there things like normal and return just like I would do.

It sounds like your friend may not want the responsibilite to do this. Maybe you can find a college person. Then they will have time to study and still be there for you fir babies. Jo

This is kind of what I do, except it is either my younger brother (24) or my mother who stay at the house and pet sit. I do buy the easy food and leave money to order pizza too.

My animals are very spoiled, and I just feel more comfortable having someone watching them at the house 24/7.

In the past, we have been gone for 6 days, and I believe we paid $150-$200 - I can't remember.

In January we are going to Las Vegas, and my mother is coming up to watch both the pets, and her grandson. We have 2 dogs and a cat. And the kid, LOL.

She will need to take our son to school and to activities, as well as take care of the animals, etc. I believe we will pay her around $150 or so. It is for 4 days.

I think your prices are fair.

It depends on where you live.
In the Boston area...We pay 39.00 per day...for 1 dog and 35.00 for the other dog. ( 5.00 discount for the second dog)
8.00 for a full day of play and excercise ...per dog.
I also supply my own food.
It comes out to about 90.00 a day for both dogs.
Ten days is 900.00.
Some vacations...this is our most expensive cost.
My husband gets very stressed when its time to leave our Jack Russel's. :sad1:

I think this is what people who've never done it themselves fail to realize. I used to find I ended up eating more convenience food, etc. because of the extra time needed in my schedule. Sometimes I had to turn down other work or social opportunities, and once I even used a sick day at work to take a sick charge (not a pet, a teenager) to the doctor.

My 15 yr old daughter gets paid $30 a day to sit for two dogs.

We found a boarding place for Snowball, the dog. She'll get to be on a huge ranch with a bunch of other dogs and is sure to have a grand old time! We're paying $20/night and this includes food.

After reading all of the replies, I've decided that maybe my $200 offer was a little low since she'd have to come out 2x. Therefore, I'm going to talk to her tomorrow and change it to 1x per day. Patches (the cat) will love this. Her idea of a vacation is to be left alone with tons of food. So, I think she'd appreciate only having my friend come over 1x instead 2x.

To the people who said that if they pet sit, they spend time with the animals even if it's not required--that's not possible with patches as most people don't even know we have a cat. :lmao:

The $20/night sounds like a bargain. I would have one particular concern, however. Can you bring your dog's own food? Maybe portion it out into ziplok baggies, and well labeled? I would not want my dog eating "other" food, no matter how good of a quality food it was. Sometimes the change in food can cause upset digestive systems.

Have a fun trip!
