A 'special deal' through the company I work for is offering the following. Is it a good deal or should I pass it up and look elsewhere? We are a family of 6 traveling next August so I'm looking for all possible deals.

They are offering: 10-day Magic Your Way, park hopper with water park Disney World tickets for $299/adult and $268/child. The tickets would not expire between now and then but they would expire 14 days after the first day we use them.

Is it cheaper to just buy the tickets at the same time you book a resort?

Thanks for your help.

No, I don't think it includes tax. Do the rates go up each year? Maybe I should get them now so that it will lock in our rates for this year?

Is it cheaper to buy the tickets when you book your resort accommodations?

:goodvibes You might want to look at the discount ticket section on the mousesavers website and here on the DIS to compare - here's a link to the DIS info:

http://www.wdwinfo.com/discounts/discounts-tickets.htm

Just a friendly suggestion, but is there any way you could change your travel dates to the "Free Dining" period? The last few years this has been the end of August through the month of September.

Of course, no one knows yet if they will offer it again next year, but it seems like having free meals for a family of 6 would save you some big $$$!

Free dining???? What a genious idea!!!! What's the catch...it can't be as good as it sounds?

We can go anytime in August up to and including Labor Day (would need to return by Sept 2 so the kids could be back for school.) Will they release the dates for free dining when the 2009 rates come out?

Remember also if you want to book a package and do dining you have to include at least a one day ticket for everyone in your family.:)

With the caveat that Disney can change prices whenever they please........

Historically they have raised the price of admission tickets in August the last couple of years. And there is usually VERY little notice of it....for example in 2007 they announced on Friday that the rates would increase on Sunday, so you basically had Fri/Sat to scramble and buy at the lower rate. The raise in price for a 10 day was about $25 I believe, so it's not huge, but multiply that by a family and it's a bigger difference.

Free dining has been offered late August/most of September for several years now. No one knows if they'll do it next year of course. Historically the have announced it in April, with Disney VISA holders getting first dibs for a week or so before it's open to the general public. I can't recall if AP holders got advance booking too??

The "catch" for the free dining is that you have to purchase at least a one day ticket for everyone in your family. Last year, they changed that for AP holders, which was nice because a 1 day ticket that you don't need is a waste of money, lol. AND, the bigger financial "catch" is that you have to pay RACK RATE for the hotel room. You cannot get an AP, AAA, Disney Visa or any other discount and also get the free dining. These sell out quickly, so if you want to do it, I'd suggest you start watching DIS in mid-March as they usually have rumors about when it will open for sale.

Some things to consider....free food sounds wonderful, and for a family of 6 it's likely to be a good deal.....but you will have to rent TWO resort rooms in value, moderate and most of the deluxes, because they only allow 4 people in most of the rooms, 5 in some of the value suites (which of course are more expensive). I believe the only rooms that can accomodate 6 all together are the deluxe suites and the cabins (and I can't recall if the cabins get free dining, I know the campgrounds don't). This are of course quite expensive at rack rate.....but there are often deals on these more expensive rooms at other times of the year. Staying off site with a large family can be even more cost effective, not to mention having more space! The other major downside to free dining period, whether you get free dining or not, is the crowd level is at one of the highest levels except for holidays. This means that the trade off is longer lines, less rides you'll be able to get on, and crowded restaurants (if you do sign up for free dining, get your ADRs made at exactly 180 days as these fill up really really fast, even the less popular restaurants book up quickly).

What you might want to do is sit down and do some calculating.....what would it cost you to stay offsite (if this is an option you want to consider)....you'd need a car to get to Disney each day, but you can save money by eating 1 or more meals at home, and you'll have a lot more space, amenities and often a private pool. Then figure what it would cost to stay onsite at a different time when you can get a discount (Visa, AAA, AP, etc). If you knew the lines were going to be longer would you stay longer so you can get done all that you want to do? This might mean going non-free dining times you could stay less days and still get the same things done, so that's cheaper too.

Then go to allearsnet.com/menu/menus.htm and look through the menus and decide where you'll want to eat each day (you'll need to do this for free dining to prepare for your ADRs too). Then calculate the cost of what everyone 'might' order. Add this to your discounted hotel or condo/home rate to see if you'll save money. Many people have found that after considering that they'll need to stay a few extra days for free dining period that they cost savings is only a couple hundred dollars. And that it's not worth the small amount of savings to stand in long hot lines. Every family of course will have differing opinions on this. You'd never get me to go during free dining, even if they offered a discounted room rate.....those types of crowds are definitely not my thing.

You've got some time to make some decisions. If you're going to try for free dining, I wouldn't buy those tickets from your employer because that $40 savings would be offset by the requirement that you buy at least a 1 day ticket for everyone in your family, which is usually about $70. You could buy from your employer with 1 less day, but you'll still have to pay the $70 for that 1 day ticket so your net savings will only be about $10-15 (once you get over 4 days adding additional days is a couple dollars a day). If you are planning to stay more than 12 days, most agree that an AP is the best price, or if you plan to return within 12 months (many stagger their vacations each year so they go in August this year and get an AP, and then go next year in July before their AP expires to get a second use out of it). If you don't want to wait and see about free dining, then you might go ahead and buy the tickets from your employer now....not only is it a savings of $40 (and these tickets are rarely discounted much....undercovertourist.com is about the largest discount consistently available, their price includes tax, so compare that with your employers cost once you know if employer includes tax or not). Your tickets don't expire until 14 days after you first use them, so buying it now means you can save it until next year (or even the year after that, etc), and not only save that $40, but also any price increase that will likely happen next month, and then again next August perhaps before you arrive! If you would be charging these tickets in advance and paying finance charges it might negate the savings, so it may be wiser to simply put a little away each month until you go as though you were making the payments, but without the finance charges and buy it next summer before 2009 increase hits.

Lots to think about, but if you truly want to save as much as possible, you'll have to put in some time crunching numbers to find out what works best for your family.

Have fun!

Just want to point out a few things contained here...
1) Even AP holders who want free dining have to buy the 1-day ticket. AP holders *can* get a room+dining package and not have to buy a ticket, but that deal does not include the free dining promo. Getting the free dining package requires the purchase of a ticket. It's not really a waste, though - we use them when we renew our AP's so we get the money back that way.

2) If one of your family of 6 will be younger than 3, you can stay in a deluxe room that accommodates 5. Children under 3 who sleep in a Pack-N-Play do not count towards the room occupancy. There are Family Suites at the All-Star Music Resort that accommodate 6. The Fort Wilderness Cabins also sleep 6 and, if available, are part of the free dining promotion.

Just wanted to clarify a couple of things! Good luck with your decision!

If there are codes that come out in Aug(for Nov, as happened the last few yrs) for discounted room or discounted room and ticket package, the discount is on the room only? Is there a bigger discount on the room when it's with a package or is the discount on the room the same percantage either with a package or without? Can't decide to wait to buy tickets till after discount comes out in Aug(assuming it does).

Right, the discount is on the room portion of the package. I have never priced it out and run the numbers, but I assume it's a similar discount as what the room-only discount runs. I have seen Disney offer an upgrade to the Park Hopper + Water Parks Fun & More tickets for free when you buy base tickets with your package, but that was in another slow season (January/early February).

The main crux of the issue is whether you want the DDP. If so, you have to buy a package that includes tickets. You can buy the one-day base tickets for everyone to get it but with a party of 6 you're talking $450 for those 1-day base tickets. That's a lot of extra money to spend.

If you are unsure of whether the DDP is for you, I have a spreadsheet that someone else posted that you can have if you want. You enter the TS & CS restaurants and entrees you're likely to order and it figures up the cost of the DDP and the cost of paying out-of-pocket. If you'd like to use that, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you.

Helps to actually read the post!

Good luck with free dining, it is unfortunate that you may have to wait until April or so to find out if Free Dining will be offered.

Well if we're lucky we might find out earlier if there's at least a possibility for Free Dining next year - last year (2007) the resort guests staying at a WDW resort during the free dining period (clear up until 10/12/07) had a Bounceback offer to be able to book Free Dining for the next year (2008).

So I'm figuring that if the Free Diners going this summer start reporting that they are being offered another Free Dining Bounceback for next year (2009), I would say there's at least a chance maybe!

BTW, there were a lot of posts here on the DIS last year during Free Dining where people who weren't there (but really really wanted that Bounceback!) flew down to WDW for a one night's stay just to be able to book that particular Free Dining Bounceback offer to guarantee they'd get it the next year and not have to wait until April. Bet that happens again if offered this year too :cutie:

One thing to remember is that after the first use you can upgrade them if you want for 14 days. If you have a couple of main park days left and half the water fun park and more days left and if you are planning on retuning to WDW it may be worth converting them to non expiring tickets

Thanks for the info! As far as the DDP, I'll have to think about that some more, so I'll have to get back to you on that spreadsheet maybe. But, last yr I sort of priced it out(after the fact, using our receipts), and we spent about the same amount, maybe a little less unless I lost some receipt which is very possible. So it would have cost about the same. And, we didn't have ressies for a lot of the meals. But, with the changes this yr, particularly the gratuities added on top of the DDP cost, it doesn't seem to be such a great deal. For 2 adults, myself and DD17, it would add on more than another $100. Last yr our cost with tip was about the same as the DDP with tips included so not thinking that's such a great deal anymore. As far as I know they don't discount the DDP, right? Thanks for answers! :goodvibes

Thanks for all of the advice!! I'm unsure about the free dining now. I'm sure you think I'm crazy but we wanted to go in late August to avoid the crowds. One of the previous posters mentioned that it is very crowded during free dining (makes sense...)

I know I should be thinking about saving money but I'm thinking that shorter lines are the way to go with my family, especially since it will be quite hot. Now I'd like to find out when free dining is just so that I can book the week prior!
