I hate how I shave my legs and then a day later they feel prickly. But I can't shave again until at least 5-6 or sometimes even a week has gone by or my skin gets really irritated.

Is there anything I can do so the growth slows, or so that I can shave more often without discomfort?

Get your legs waxed. It will last a few weeks and the hair will grow back more sparsely each time.

I also tried Nair before, and veet, and the results were similar, but I also found it was easy to miss patches and that stuff stinks up your house!

Look into Eplilator..Braun SilkEpi is a good one. Some discomfort when you first use it but then you get used to the discomfort (like plucking your eyebrows :) After a while the hair grow back fine and sparse, no prickly feeling.

Go to Sally's Beauty, but the waxing pot kit and all will work out in the end. It will cost you about 40 bucks but so worth it. You only need to replace the wax every few months. It will last a long time. Ive been waxing for about 10 years now and I only have to wax my legs every couple of months.

there are moisturizers that claim to slow hair growth. I used Aveeno years ago. Not sure how well it worked and it was smelly - couldn't leave the house with it on. It seemed to work a little, but the smell prevented me from using it often enough so I just gave up. I think, is anything, it did soften the hairs so it seemed to work - that may help with your situation.

I am not sure what improvements have been made over the years.

Get older.

If it's irritating your skin to shave, you could try shaving down with the growth of the hair. It's not as close of a shave, but it's nothing that you can see just looking at your legs.

to reduce the irritation you can try using Bert's Bees shave cream. It is a lot slicker then all the gel/ foam stuff.

The home kits work well (I like the Gigi Body Hard Wax) but I would not try that at home if you've never had your legs waxed before. Get them waxed professionally once (usually a half leg is $25) and watch how the aesthetician puts the wax on (direction, thickness, how long) and how she holds the skin & pulls it off. It is a little tricky and takes practice but is definitely do-able.

I have sensitive skin and even the expensive salon waxes leave me with red marks on my legs. The hair is gone but I'm then too ashamed to show my reddy legs.

I'll keep reading in case someone has a great idea as I have the same problem as the OP.

The Burt's Bees stuff, that's good yes? Anyone else with irritated skin able to use it too?

Become old :)
I was going to say the same thing.

Seriously, when I was in my teens and 20s, my leg hair was like you describe -- and my daughters are like that now, so I don't think it's bad memory on my part. Around 40 it all but disappeared; it's completely gone in places, lighter in others, and it grows back very slowly.

The other moral is, If you're already in your 30s, laser hair removal would be a waste of money.

I second this. We discussed this in a thread last week but I can't stress enough that the SilkEpi is a much better choice than waxing. Both methods pull hair out by the roots but the SilkEpi is cheaper and much less messy than waxing. You feel a little sting at first but you quickly get used to it.

Of course, if you have very dark hair and fair skin there are two home laser hair removal machines on the market - Bellalite and Tria. They are more pricey but work on the right type of hair/skin combination.

Does home waxing actually work?

I've waxed my legs twice with the Nads waxing kit (the one with the wax on strips and it isn't messy AT ALL), and it works just fine. I send hubby and son away, since it's so ungainly and I yelp so loudly, but at the end I have smooth legs (which I want every so often, when I'm not being a furry beast) and it's all fine.

And there's no way to tell if it's simply getting older OR if it's the waxing, but it takes much longer, after that second time, for my leg fur to grow back.

Same thing with my eyebrows; I had them waxed twice in my 20s and I went from having Brooke Shields eyebrows to, well, not. (and now I miss them) I was still aging between those brow waxings, but both were in my 20s so it's not as thought-provoking as the legs (which were in my 30s), and seems more easy to correlate with the waxing.
