Is there any trip insurance that will cover a covid related cancellation?

We have about 25k invested in July's 2 cruises (Caribbean and alaska 2 days apart). I can't imagine losing all that money if one of us were to test positive.

Is there any protection out there that will actually protect (2 cruises, 3 flights)?

If you buy Cancel for Any Reason travel insurance from a reputable company, then you will be able to get reimbursed regardless of the reason- you don't even have to state a reason. I have used CFAR insurance myself and easily & successfully filed a claim for the cancelled trip without stating a reason. The catch is that reimbursement is typically around 75% of all costs, not 100%, and that the insurance must be purchased within a few weeks after making the initial trip deposit, and CFAR insurance is more expensive than non-CFAR insurance.

75% might seem unappealing now, but if you have to cancel a trip for a non-coverable reason, getting the 75% back rather than 0% back is fantastic. And CFAR insurance usually is part of a policy that includes regular for-cause insurance that would reimburse 100% for a covered reason.

I now always cover our trips with CFAR insurance, as life can be unpredictable, as we've all noticed this year.

I highly doubt that any of the travel companies are offering insurance for COVID right now. It’s too risky for them!

that being said... current thought is that Alaska probably won’t happen as Canada won’t open to cruising in time.

Assuming you are booked with DCL, see their "Book with Confidence" page, particularly the "Flexible Refund Policy" for covid-qualifying scenarios within 14 days of embarkation:
https://disneycruise.disney.go.com/special-offers/book-with-confidence/
There is also the Disney Cruise Line Vacation Protection Plan with its CFAR provision.

And many airlines have at least somewhat flexible change/cancel policies now as long as you aren't booking their cheapest fare category.

Another issue you are may have is that you have different parts to your trip. Cancel for any reason will typically be before the trip starts. So once you get on one flight, CFAR may not work for the remaining parts...

Not sure if OP is aware, but DCL's current policy, here, would give you 100% FCC if you tested positive within 14 days of your sail date:

Wouldn't help on the flights, I know, but for that I would just be sure to book refundable fares or an airline that allows last minute changes. And as mentioned, it is future cruise credit, not a refund, but nobody else would give you a refund so better than nothing.

But I suspect OP's plans are going to be dashed even if both cruises sail because given OP's name, seems likely she has kids, and kids are not vaccine-eligible, so OP will almost certainly need to get Covid-19 tests for the whole family in advance of the second sailing, which, given the short turnaround time between them, seems next to impossible.

Yeah, OP is kind of asking a "tail wagging the dog" kind of question. Odds of July cruises in either region are fading with each passing day.

Ah. TVGUY, always full of hope and optimism.:)
LOL. Yup, my pessimistic posts which looking back over the last 9 months turned out to be wildly optimistic. I do have to search for the post from someone who GUARANTEED cruising would resume before Thanksgiving.

Thank you! I was not aware of this. I actually can get a refund as well. I didn't even consider disney protection, historically it has not been great.

This is what we will do I think.

Airlines are being pretty flexible so that is ok.

OMG, I am pretty shocked by the price! 800 to cover one cruise, and 900 to cover the other. I'm not sure why, but I was expecting it to be less.

btw, it’s only good 14 days before....

Yes. They are covering it if you catch it and have to cancel the trip. But not if someone else catches it and your trip gets cancelled or stopped short.

AXA Assistance USA offers reimbursement for trip cancellation or interruption due to COVID-19. They have an optional cancel for any reason coverage that can be added. They cover, as do most travel insurance policies, at 75%.

I recently used them for travel to the Galapagos. Thankfully I didn‘t need to cancel or file a claim for Covid-related reasons, but I did need to file a claim for a missed flight and an additional night at a hotel as a result. They’ve been easy to work with thus far, and I think they will approve my claim and reimburse me.

Travel insurance typically has time-sensitive eligibility requirements if you are adding cancel for any reason (and sometimes pre-existing conditions; read the entire coverage information carefully before purchasing). You need to purchase usually within 14 days of making the initial payment deposit for your trip.

My uneducated question to your question;
Do you think there is a chance you could be denied the second sailing because you were out of the country?
I had b2b out of PC but was thinking what if “wording of policy” reflects not out of country travel X-days(14-21) prior to your sailing? I had planned Bahamas and Nassau. But my back to back was on two different cruise lines at the same port. But the wording might be so vague as to rule out a person traveling out of the country prior to boarding a second cruise.

An uneducated/guess to your question lol. Yes, I think it is quite possible this is not going to work for lots of reasons!

1. Your comment about being out of the country.
2. Required vaccine and maybe we haven't been able to get it, or maybe my youngest can't get it.
3. I've read that entry into canada will require a negative test 3 days prior (not within 3 days), we would be out at sea exactly 3 days prior. Likely a rumor at this point but that would be impossible.
4. 1 of us testing positive before or after 1 of the cruises.
5. Would DCL let us essentially do a B2B?
6. Will we plan and verify and expect everything to work, only for some small detail prevent us from boarding the 2nd cruise or entering Canada.

Really, countless things could go wrong. I feel like I can pretty much roll with anything as long as I don't lose a ton of money. Yes, it would be super disappointing if we can't do 1 or both cruises, but I can make something else work.
